My mom found this at a garage sale back in the late 80s. The label was missing, and someone had written "Goonies 2" on it in it's place. But I played it like crazy and beat it. I passed it on to a friend when I gave them my NES. Truly a classic.

Damn! I've been playing this game since '88 and I never knew you could throw the boomerang in multiple directions! I relied on the Official Nintendo Player's Guide to beat this game back in the day. Hell, I busted it out the last time I played this game on stream because I had completely forgotten where one item was. I have notes written in it from ten-year old me. Present me really appreciates that! Oh man, I have Wai Wai World. It kinda sucks. One thing worth mentioning is to pay attention to which way Mikey is facing in the corner of the first person sections. It's crucial to navigating between the front and back maps, and once you realize this, the game becomes a lot less disorienting. Great video, dude!
@GenerationGapGaming5 жыл бұрын
Yeah dude I just came about the boomerang thing by accident. I was trying to see if I could throw a bomb while jumping and when I did that combo of buttons in mid air it threw the boomerang in that direction. And it worked for any other direction I tried too. It was cool but I assumed others figured that out too lol. So cool you have your own notes in your guide from when you were a kid. Thanks as always for watching dude. Always enjoy your comments.

Back in the 80's and early 90's, Pac-Man on Atari is the common tune used in video games scenes/arcades heard in TV shows and movies.
@mresturk93364 жыл бұрын
How to show a video game in a 1980s/early 1990s movie: 1 - Use prerecorded footage of your kid playing the game. 2 - Replace the audio with Atari 2600 sfx no matter what console is being played. 3 - Have the actor "playing" the game manhandle the controller like a confused monkey. Optional - Describe the game in a completely inaccurate manner by spewing out random, "gamer term" gibberish. Even if your film was specifically intended to revolve around video games and marketed to the gamer audience (looking at you 'The Wizard'). Strangely even a lot of modern movies continue to use this formula....

Back in 1988 I committed to playing this game with hopes of actually making it somewhere....played it a few times previously and saw my older brother find a couple Goonies (it was his game). It felt like I played it for the entire day, I remember the feeling of realizing how the maps connected like something clicked and was able to open up the entire world and find all the Goonies and the mermaid. I beat it at the age of 6 and I knew I did something amazing although I never thought it was possible.....it’s not an easy game but definitely one of the best nes games and the music I can still hear til this day

My brother and I were completely hooked on this game back in the day. He got it as a gift one year when I was around 8 years old, and we both tried our hardest to play through the whole thing, but kept hitting roadblocks in our progress. The funniest one (and my favorite memory of the game) revolves around that got-dang CANDLE. Nowhere in the game does it tell you to hit that old woman five times, and we were so fed up with not being able to progress without it that we began systematically going through every room and hitting every corner of the screen with every tool in our arsenal. When we reached that old woman, our patience had completely run out, so we just started hitting her over and over out of sheer frustration. You can imagine our laughter and bewilderment when she spit out the candle. That stupid candle-spitting woman made us paranoid about checking every corner of every game we played after that point, for a good number of years. Funny thing is, this actually HELPED us in games like Metal Gear or the Metroid series.

Thanks for making this video! As much as I love the game, it always felt too obscure and underrated to me. I'm floored to see that (at the time of this writing) there are over 118,000 views; over 3,000 likes; and over 700 comments! It's astonishing to realize I'm not alone in loving this game. When the game does come up in conversation, I'm always surprised to find out how many people had a hard time beating the game. I did have the instruction manual and the wonderful Player's Guide that you mentioned, but even with those things for many other classic games, I never could beat them. But "Goonies II" had just exactly the right learning curve for me, and it was the first game I ever beat, and to this day one of the few I've ever beat. That's why it remains my favorite video game of all time! (I'm glad you beat it now, and I'm sure you beat many, many more games in your childhood than I did. And you beat them without the manual! It's just interesting how different things work for different people.) I knew all the strategies but not the trivia. I didn't know about Mikey's appearance in the Wai Wai game, and I had no idea it cameoed in a movie! Re: your question about the Pac-Man sound effects -- only the very earliest games had sounds that no one bothered to copyright, and so are public domain. It doesn't matter what video game from what era, or how sophisticated the game's sound is; you'll always get Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, or Space Invader noises dubbed into the movie or TV show! Thanks again for sharing and allowing us to relive the memories!

Renting games back in the NES days truly was a very special experience. You are so right. As for the Goonies 2 game, I have to admit, I enjoy playing it but get stuck quite often. I’m going to keep playing it though because I’m sure once I really get into it and make some headway I will really enjoy it. Thanks for all the pro tips. Really enjoy your videos man!!👍😎

The way the agent in that film is holding the controller is not that far off from how old school arcade players would play on console. My dad glued a nes controller down to play Galaga on the nes when I was a kid.

I use to watch my older brother play this for hrs and he always got stuck in 1 of those little rooms. So it was cool to see the ending. Thanks

When I played this as a kid I found every item and every kid but one! I could never find him and finally beat the game with a game genie code. I remember going straight to Annie, opening the cage, and being completely unsatisfied at the ending. It really is much more gratifying to beat the game using skill and not cheating. I may have to follow your suggestion and use the players guide to finally get that feeling of satisfaction. Thanks for sharing your video. :)

Amazing game, one of my top 10 as a child. I had that players guide. it was so EPIC. I miss the good ol day of gaming, before the interwebz

I never had a problem with finishing this game as a child of the '80s without guide books. Great game!

One of the few games that I was wrong about in the beginning. When I first started playing I was like wth is this. After getting sick of my other games I came back to give this a second try and ended up loving it. Haven't thought about this game for a while. Thanks for the reminder.

Man, thanks for this stroll down memory lane. I absolutely agree this was one of most confusing games I ever played

This game is somewhat underrated. I enjoyed this game as a kid, and I also did not beat this game as a kid, but rather beat it back in 2016 with cheats and KZbin tutorials lol. Awesome review. And yes Jay the NES Addict is awesome.

I loved this game as a kid. Got it the Christmas it came out. Was utterly obsessed with it. I also liked Dr. chaos, which was the same type.

The music in the NES game brings back great memories. I always watch the Goonies when the weather gets cool outside. I also remember seeing the commodore version and had a blast playing that as a kid. Mullet boy 12:25.

I'm jealous you got to play the C64 version lol. I need to try to find it. And you are correct on mullet boy!!

Great video. This was the second NES game I finished as a kid. The first was another Konami classic, Castlevania.

I beat this one back in the day without a guide. It took a long time to do though and it basically came down to just trying everything I could everywhere to find secret doors.

Most impressive Heather. Lots of dedication to beat it without a guide.

I still love this game. The music makes it better still. It’s a true ”feel-good-game” , if there ever was one. I actually learned at least 2 secrets from this video. I’m hitting the old shoebox HARD tomorrow. I really enjoy your straight forward approach to have fun with games. It’s refreshing visavi all the trash-talkers. Good work !

Thanks Roger. This is definitely a quirky game, but I do get upset when people trash it so much. It was always fun for me. I agree the music makes the game much more enjoyable.

Oh WOW, I TOTALLY forgot about the computer version of this game until I just watched this Tyler. I played that thing for hours on a Commadore 64 that my older cousins had I think, it's been a while and I was like 7 or 8... Shows my age haha, love seeing videos like this that bring back old memories. We used to frequent Daytona Beach every summer as a family vacation, and all the arcades there had the Playchoice-10\Famicom Goonies, which I dumped at least 1000 quarters into since first discovering it. I've played all the games in this video and loved them all, great job on this man!

Really enjoyed reading your comment here Ryan. Thanks for sharing. I had played a few playchoice 10 machines as a kid but for whatever reason I overlooked Goonies on there lol. And I would have loved to have the C64 version. Thanks again!

I beat this game as a kid, and still have it along with the Nintendo player's guide. I remember hitting Konami Man by mistake, and not getting energy refills anymore or going straight to get the early hyper shoes. My favorite part was using the diving suit, and using the unlimited harpoon.
@GenerationGapGaming5 жыл бұрын
Yeah Konami Man dont mess around lol. Happy to hear you beat it as a kid!
