I still think hes the game master, remember when Arisu said "whoever is behind this made up their own rules, theres no point in the games" in a way Chishiya is the only one the whole series that did what he wanted to, the pattern he went in was always finish at the last minute, in every game he would always do something at this last minute, meaning that whatever the others didnt do he would finish it so he could, they also mentioned everyones back story and how they got to that fake world but Chishiya, if you think about it the game master wouldnt have a back story to how they winded up there because they would have been the one to start it all

For us being shown none of his backstory, he's still probably the most complicated character of the series. I hope we find out more about him in season 2. Edit: For anyone wondering, I HAVE now watched season two, so you don't have to keep telling me! My comment was posted a year ago, so obviously I didn’t know his backstory at the time. Anyway. I liked that we were shown just a small moment in his life, but one that is very telling of his declining moral compass. His game with the king of diamonds (I think? The one with sulphuric acid) was my favourite due to its moral and philosophical ideas on passing blame and who determines the worth of another life. Both games Chishiya was alone in were actually my favourites. Glad we got to see his puzzle-solving skills. Good stuff in Season 2, and the ending was really great. Not sure if they’ll do another season, but if they leave it at two great seasons, I’m happy with that :)

Manga reader here (no S2 spoiler!): Netflix softened Chishiya *a lot* to make him more appealing to the viewer. Chishiya survives because he *is* a narcissistic sociopath who views other people (including Kuina) as paws and unlike Niragi he was this way before the Borderlands, too. He didn't include Kuina in his plan to betray Usagi and Arisu and intended to frame her, too, and left her during the 10❤️ alone, making her hate him as much as she hates Niragi. Niragi is attacked by Chishiya just because Chishiya dislikes him, saying "looking at you feels like looking into a mirror. It pisses me off". Both of them agree, that they are almost the same (psychopath, sociopath). Therefore Chishiya isn't kind at all. He calls himself completely empty and is disinterested in life in general. Living or dying doesn't matter to him. He wants to survive because his narcissistic pride forbids him in losing a game to someone for him inferior.

as someone who's reading the manga it's so interesting to see how netflix made him a lot more humanistic in the show than the manga. in the manga during the tag game he saves karube and sees his act as more of a business exchange because he thinks karube will be useful to him in the future, whereas in the show he just stays to himself and chooses to try and help arisu in the end, even though it was still for his own good. he's by far one of my favorite characters because of how smart and cunning he is.

they completely changed chishiya, they removed so many of his important panels and changed his relationship both niragi and kuina, idk how are they going to manage to do the season two with so many changes they also removed keiichi from the 4 of clubs, the bus game which i think was kinda important bc it shows us why did keiichi sacrifice himself for chishiya, hopefully they’ll at least show us his backstory the battle royale won’t make as much sense either, chishiya and niragi are the complete opposites in the live action, meanwhile in the manga they related to each other, they made chishiya seem like he hates niragi bc he’s so stupid, but he in fact in the manga chishiya belives niragi to be as intelligent as him, they changed the rooftop scene for no reason they also made niragi shoot agni, which makes it seem like they both died, even though they’re really important in the season 2 and chichiya being with arisu usagi and kuina?? they also made mira look like the only “game master” not showing the kings, they’ll mabye to that in season two though but even after all this i’m very excited for the s2, they’re apparently recording the king of clubs rn

I really like Netflix's live adaptation of Chishiya and I have a deep respect for the Chishiya in the manga, especially during the end, which I notice a lot of people tend to gloss over. I was motivated to write this since I saw a few people believe that manga Chishiya represented who live adaptation Chishiya is/will be despite the differences already presented in the first season. I also saw a lot of people only bringing up Chishiya's betrayals, manipulations, or him being a "sociopath" (without giving light to the other parts of his character). I don't believe that the netflix adaptation actually confirms him to be one but what's also irking is that a lot of people brushed off his character once they learned that he was a sociopath. Towards the end of the manga, it depicted Chishiya growing from being just a manipulative/deceitful person who used other people for his own gains (and I don't think those words portray who Chishiya 100% is even at the start of the manga). I'm going into more detail below so [MANGA SPOILER WARNING] . . . . . . - Chishiya reveals he is envious of the King of Diamonds for having an ideal and dying for it. He doesn't have something to fight for. He doesn't have anyone to fight for. - Chishiya takes a damn bullet for Usagi and says he wants to be "uncharacteristic". To quote him, "I came to accept that the prospect of changing in order to see the future ahead didn't sound too bad at all". Already, he's open to change. - Even before that, he came to Arisu wanting to talk to him. He used to view humans as foolish and despised their "goodwill". Note the past tense. - Chishiya realized that he was hurting the people who cared for him. He envied those people for their goodwill and selflessness, something he never really experienced. - In the real world, he tells Niragi he was wasting away and now wanted to live an honest life. Chishiya realizes he had lived an empty life before and wanted to part from it. Even in the beginning, Chishiya showed that he wasn't a bad person. He didn't have any ill intentions and while he manipulated people as needed, he didn't enjoy it. However, what's more extraordinary to me (and glossed over by a lot of readers) is that we were shown that Chishiya was capable of a selfless and irrational act. Heck, he WAS selfless and saved someone's life. This goes against everything he believed in or did before. He's not that person anymore, or, is trying to change. Not only did Chishiya change but he wanted to continue growing.

exactly what I wanted to say , I love his character a lot , his talk with the king of diamonds was for me a very emotional point in the manga ( and there are many ) , his card game with the granny too , I also think his personality is mostly from his upbringing as they show his dad never paid him any attention and it's not something innate and so he's able to become a better person
@nannipants66083 жыл бұрын
YES! In tha Manga, after the King of Diamonds game, Chishiya truly was touched by Keiichi Kuzuryū's belifs therefore arrived at his awakening point/epiphany. Towards the end of the series, he came to peace with Niragi and even blocked a bullet for Usagi knowing that she was the sunlight of arisu's life. The character development of Chishiya will be more obvious in Season 2 I assume. Towards the end, Chishiya really learnt the meaning of living, and puts down his pride and self-centeredness to think for others. Personally, I was really intrigued by the character Chishiya from beginning to end; his intelligence never fail to impress me, and his awakening at the end really makes me like him more. hahahha.

@@chickenisindeedmystyle7316 In the manga, Arisu, Chishiya and Niragi all agree they are similar to each other. Arisu is the first to want to change for Usagi and his friends, then Chishiya wants to change so he can live an honest and fulfilling life. The manga goes really in depth into their psychology - I wish the show had shown the parallels between them a little more. Like the way they changed Chishiya’s line on the rooftop from ‘Looking at you p*sses me off. It’s like watching myself’ to ‘But I am clever’ and how Chishiya calls Niragi stupid all the time :// In the manga, Chishiya respects Niragi’s capability as a diamonds player: Niragi is very clever! Chishiya hated Niragi because he hated that part of himself, but the show portrays him as looking down on Niragi. They missed the plot entirely on these characters imo, and therefore the shootout between them will lose all its deep meaning unless the show develops the characters a lot in series 2

I think chishia is such a beloved character because he embodys one form of an ideal that we would all want to live up to if we were in this situation. (Spoilers) In the manga, Kuina and Chishiya's partnership ended after he betrayed Arisu, and he hadn't told her about it in the manga. However, since she wasn't fazed enough to leave him after the betrayal, I have a feeling they may at least go on to be friends in the show. I also agree with the notion that he is starting to genuinely care about her, because if he really felt like Kuina had used up her usefulness and was going to become a liability, then he would've let her walk through the lasers, but he didn't, and the way he said it so urgently makes me feel it's beyond how useful she'll be in the face card games. In the end, one of the participant realized that he is always calm because he simply do not care about death. He doesn't care if he dies because he has nothing to live for, and he doesn't care if some people die because he doesn't care about them
@ellajelenska66433 жыл бұрын
yeah the 6 of diamonds, I really hope they’ll show it in the season 2 because it really explains a lot of chishiya’s thinking and behavior, I’m pretty sure it was shown between the K of clubs game, so they could add it in the live action too, but I’m not sure, they already removed keiichi from the bus, 4 of clubs game so they could remove this too. but if they did the whole K of diamonds wouldn’t make as much sense and neither will the battle royale (it won’t be explained why did keiichi sacrifice himself for chishiya and why did chishiya envy him for that) and i mean they already really changed chishiya’s relationship to niragi, they made niragi appear so dumb even though in the manga chishiya belived him to be as intelligent as he is, they completely changed the rooftop scene, when chishiya burnt niragi he did it bc he hated how similar the 2 of them were, not bc he could be the witch, niragi was everything chishiya hated about himself, i feel like they completely missed the whole point of their relationship they made them seem like they’re the complete opposites, when they were actually supposed to relate to each other, the main difference between the two of them was supposed to be that chishiya tried to hide his selfishness meanwhile niragi reveals and empowers it both chishiya and arisu wanted to change at the end but niragi didnt, that’s why he shot usagi: she was one of the main reasons arisu wanted to change. I’m pretty sure he would’ve shot keiichi too if he was alive, chishiya takes the bullet bc he wants to change

One of my favourite things about AliceInBorderland is the fact that at the very end, in the group of people that actually survived we can find both, good hearted people (like Arisu, Usagi) and cold sociopaths (Chishiya, Niragi). A lot of stories usually goes with "This character survived because they're kind, so the message is that kindness can safe your life". But Alice in Borderland did something way more powerful than just that - the message in AIB is more like "What makes you survive is your will to be alive - if you are grateful to be alive so badly that you are willing to even sacrifice others, you will survive. But if you appreciate the miracle of being alive to the point when you not only respect your own life, but also lifes of others, you might be able to survive with others. And if you respect others lifes more than your own, you'll end up sacrificing yourself" And this hits harder, since it's way more realistic, but still beautiful in its own way

now i absolutely LOVE this analysis of Chisiya! and i think the implications of Chisiyas inner character based on his partnership with Kuina is something that i find super interesting too. unlike when he used Arisu (and let Usagi face whatever fate the militants had in store for her), Chisiya has never put Kuina in a outright dangerous situation. plus he sounded the most panicked he has all series when Kuina was close to accidentally crossing the border. he even let her stick around once leaving the beach (and if we can assume he only needed her to steal the playing cards, there was no reason for him to keep her around). i just think its cool to think about!

Chishiya never intended to do the right thing. He ALWAYS intended to do the smart thing. Sacrificing Arisu and Usagi was never something that would have made him feel guilty. Whether he cared or not, he made sure that it wouldn’t effect him. Sacrifices needed to be made, and Chishiya was going to make damn sure that it wasn’t him. It could never be him. Now his relationship with Kuina is complicated. Chishiya is smart enough to know that you can’t trust anyone, but he isn’t dumb enough to think that you can do everything alone. Kuina was his best option. A sympathetic woman who is tough in every sense of the word? Easy target. However I think that Kuina is using Chishiya too. She needs to get back to her mother, and Chishiya is an advantage not many have access too. I think she’s playing Chishiya by using his arrogance, but this isn’t about her. Chishiya doesn’t care enough as he offered her the chance to go back to Arisu whilst he leaves. He was ready to separate. However not by death. He made sure that she didn’t get hit by the lasers. He also stated that he placed Kuina and Usagi on watch whilst the plan was in action. He knew that Usagi was in an area that the militants would catch her, however he placed Kuina in an area that was nearly empty and out of the way. Whether he cares about Kuina or uses her, or even both! He does everything he does for a reason. Chishiya is the most complicated character in my opinion, but I completely agree with what the man said. Chishiya is cruel, but not by nature. He adapts, no matter the circumstances. He’s smart and selfish. And in the borderlands, that’s the winning traits anyone would wish to have if they want to survive. I’m talking about Netflix Chishiya, not manga. I think that they’re too different to put into the same category. Great video man!

And now, after watching season 2 and finding out his prior profession, it all makes sense! You were right to say he had an enlightened understanding of death- much deeper than others there. As well, I think his choice to steer clear of other players (like you mentioned in hide & seek), was not only due to the reason you gave, but also potentially to not get close to others emotionally. Perhaps he was trying to prevent himself from caring about them. Again, this makes even more sense now knowing his profession- he HAD to turn those emotions off to stay sane. But, if he had gotten too attached, it’s possible he would’ve let that emotion get in the way of the “best choices”- at least that was probably part of his rationalization. Anyway- I just found your channel, but I am loving your energy and content! Very good stuff. Thank you for sharing that brain of yours! ❤

I love chishiya. Though I hate it that he gets compared to niragi so much. Theres a huge difference between them. While chishiya is smart and calculating he doesn't enjoy harming or killing people. @George-ue9qc3 жыл бұрын
@@v.iseverything3902Chishiya hates that part of himself, whereas Niragi revels in it. I personally think that’s what the main difference between them is. Niragi hurts people to feel better about himself. Chishiya only hurts people when it’s necessary for his survival. (Spoilers) In the manga, during the shootout, Chishiya and Niragi say Arisu is like them also, and Arisu agrees. But I think we can all agree those three characters are fundamentally different. Yes, they’re all intelligent and selfish and didn’t have much of an issue sacrificing people as long as they survived. However, 2 out of 3 tried to stop being like that. Arisu was the first to try and change that part of himself when his friends died. A lot of the manga is Arisu battling his inner self. Then Chishiya tried to change by saving Usagi. We don’t see Niragi change, from what I recall.
@ellajelenska66433 жыл бұрын
@@George-ue9qc they still completely missed the point of their relationship though, as u said they all agreed to be similar and kinda related to each other, both niragi and chishiya are extremely intelligent, selfish and insecure, which isn’t potrayed in the live action, they made niragi appear so dumb and chishiya so smart and confident, it seemed like chishiya hated niragi bc he was so stupid but he in fact belived him to be as intelligent as him, they changed the rooftop scene for no reason, the battle royale won’t have as deep meaning now, but yes I completely agree with the way you explained their difference
@George-ue9qc3 жыл бұрын
@@ellajelenska6643 Agreed! I was so upset when they changed the rooftop scene - it would’ve taken the same amount of screen time to have them say their lines from the manga so I really don’t understand why they didn’t just keep the original lines. My only theory is they wanted to soften Chishiya to make him appealing to the viewer. However, changing their characters like that will have such an impact on season 2 making sense (or, most likely, not making sense). If Niragi is as ‘dumb’ as they portray him, him coming up with a better strategy than Arisu in the King of Clubs won’t make sense. Chishiya’s entire character arc won’t make sense or, at the very least, will be much less impactful. They missed out crucial lines for Chishiya in the game of tag, like his view on humanity and how he only saved Karube because he was betting on the ‘strong horse’ and wanted to put him in his debt. I also loved his line about becoming the protagonist of the story. That entire tag game bugged me tbh, it changed so much from the manga and not in a good way.

True, it's my 2nd fave game after the J of hearts game. Nishiya and the K of diamonds conversation was really interesting and thought-provoking. The short backstory we got for him in Season 2 makes so much sense how he became like this. Season 2 spoilers below: He was a doctor so he was already familiar with death and the probability of survival. He had to watch his patient move down the organ donor list and die as a result, because a rich person needed the organ. It's implied that he had to do similar things again and again. Over time he got cynical about the human nature. He convinced himself that it's not wrong to use your resources to survive, even if it screws over others. You say he accepts death as a fact, but later say he fears it. An argument that thinking like a stoic was advantageous to him wouldn't apply to him, if he did indeed fear death. Wanting to prevent death is normal, but a fear of it would lead to irrational decision making. In the scene you mention (tag game) that was said shows fear, his face shows surprise, and his body language shows that he's trying to protect himself. I don't think he was afraid, he was just trying to avoid death. The line proceeding it was something like, it helps to be prepared, and the point was that he's less prepared than he thought. It is true though, as you said, that his biggest advantage was acting tactically and his ability to analyze people, individually and in groups, and environments.
