I love how the Japanese language gives you Easter eggs in the story -Instead of using a more common pronoun in standard Japanese like 私(Watashi) commonly used for females 僕 (Boku) commonly used for boys she uses うち(uchi) it’s usually used for women and girls but the thing is it’s part of a different dialect so it’s interesting to use that instead of a standard dialect pronoun I’m sure I heard more but before I write a whole essay on Easter eggs they use in the language I kinda want to know that someone reads this and is Interested

So there's a small detail that got lost in translation in the conversation between her mom and Kuina. In Japanese, the phrase she used was not exactly "You look beautiful", but more closely translated to something like "that look suits you very well". The phrased is used when commenting on someone's clothes or hairstyle. I think this brings another level to her mom's acceptance, and is much more powerful than just complimenting her looks.

Loved how the show literally show how both the father and mother of Kuina strengthen her in two very different way, her father taught her the harshness of the world, while her mom taught her the warm of the world, just like how the real world really is. Hence, thats why i feel this part of the show and Kuina is really well writen, and that perhaps maybe Kuina is really a real world example given by the writer of this story, to tell us that us as humans should accept both the harsh and warm parts of the world in order to become the strongest we can be!

When I first "met" her character, I thought she was going to be one of those who are trying to be edgy but will turn out to be useless or just another damsel that would need to be saved but NO! She turned out to be one of the strongest most capable characters, and her character being a transwoman, I am even more drawn to her because she is the first really cool transgender character I've encountered in japanese media. The few I've watched weren't often in the spotlight or even made to do cool stuff. I wanted to see more of her character I wished she came to the story much earlier. Hopefully she'll have a much bigger role in season 2. Though I do think it would've been better if they found an actor who is an actual transwoman (there are plenty of equally beautiful ones), still, it's good that they presented a character who is a transgender in a positive spotlight.

@jacobr.29473 жыл бұрын
Why does it matter if the actor is trans IRL or not? The point of acting is to pretend to be someone you're not. But if that's really the route you wanna go, you'd be pretty hard-pressed to find a trans actor (a *good actor* and who fits the role btw) in Japan (a majority *conservative* country). This "issue" is such a nothingburger

actually, it's the first time that i do actually see a LGBTQ+ character being represented in a good way by a asian mainstream production

about her actor, I just would like to say that there isn't a lot of Transwoman actress in Japan, if they're looking for a non actress trans, I doubt a lot will fit the basic acting requirement, plus not a lot will audition. Because not all of them are out, and even if they're not living with their parents anymore or if they're still living with their parents, Japanese are raised in mindfulness of others, they're probably afraid that their families would be a target of harassment if someone figure out who they are, and they don't want that. So sadly even if any trans people is out within their community, it's hard for them to jump into workforce of any kind, even if they're okay with trans people, a lot of them choose to live a quiet life to avoid trouble for them and for everyone else.

Totally. I do love that about all/most of the characters in the series. It definitely avoids a lot of tropes. Kuina has a lot of strength but she's also not afraid to be vulnerable. Similarly, Arisu and Usagi's dynamic is very interesting. You mention the damsel in distress, and in many ways those standards are flipped as we see Usagi very much coming to Arisu's rescue in both a physical and metaphysical level during the show.

I'm also transgender (female-to-male) and I gotta say, Kuina's lines about accepting her past hit me very personally. When you are trans, there is so much pressure to hide your past for fear that it will cause people to invalidate the identity you have fought so hard to achieve. At the same time, how many people could just discard half their life story and replace it with a fiction? It makes you feel like, in order to be true to yourself, you have to lie to everyone else. That history is part of who you are, too. For me, I achieved a level of peace when I accepted that my past was valuable because of everything I learned. I was seeing things about life as a woman that most men don't ever get to see, and when I look at it that way I can be happy I was born this way, even though it was difficult. Seeing Kuina embrace both sides of herself and use that duality to not only survive, but also protect others, gave me goosebumps. It was such a beautiful and powerful scene!

I am intending on sharing this show with my girlfriend (and she's practically my future wife if things go well when i go see her soon). Kuina is hands down my favorite character. The representation might have something to do with it, but it's just a small piece of the puzzle. Kuina's powerful. Truly powerful. She has attained self-empowerment, courage, and a level of fortitude many can only dream of. All through the fires of adversity. She never lost her compassion, her kindness. She is truly beautiful in every sense of the word. And she is everything I aspire to be.

She is the perfect hero for me in this dystopian world, understands both how to keep her guard up but sympathise with others, there's also so much depth in her story compared the ML and FL, like I felt her pain and understood why she is the way she is. I had to explain it, go back to the scene, and even prove it on Google because everyone said I was pulling at strings. I loved the tiny detail of a trans character while it had NO impact on the story, which was refreshing to see. It didn’t matter that she was trans, nobody made a deal out of it, it was pretty glossed over but clean and heartwarming. I loved this kind of representation, I hope to see more of it in the future.

im just really curious on how chishiya trust her so much, yes she is kind and caring, but in the world where they need all the cards, why from all characters chishiya trust her? he knows that only one person can go back to the real world and kuina has the desire to go back too for her mom... will kuina betray chishiya at the end? who knows, season 2 is coming, maybe at December (I'm curious at chishiya's origins too, how is he so manipulative and cunning? maybe he is a former student or someone who works for the government?)

I read the manga,, long story short chishiya is the way he is because his parents are assholes,, that’s all I can tell you.

The best thing about her character is that she overcame her past, fully accepted it and used it to get out of an impossible situation.

Kuina is a Cool Character! She was kicking Ass!

Pardon my grammar. The only thing that the film adaptation kinda miss is the reveal of her type. I mean not by much as I was surprised myself when they showed that she can throw hands(I watch before reading the manga). So in the manga when a character is being introduced the first time they would put a "type" of each character specializes in based on the four types of games. At the start, Kuina was introduced as a "Balanced" type which is a Club that seems "okay" and then the reveal comes out and it changed to Spade (Physical) specialty. Maybe only add a more dramatic point haha.

About Kuinas mum: She would deserve better, than a mum who only remembers, she has a child at that point, she needs her help. She never protected her, when it was her responsibity, didn't stand by her side, when Kuina needed her, but Kuina now stands by her side, even when she doesn't deserve it. So yes, Kuina is a very good, too good person. Someone who may be used by others too fast. 😔

At the same time, I think it's nice that her parents have a chance to redeem themselves. My impression is that her mother did come around before the events of Borderland, but didn't really know what to do - especially if she knew she was losing her ability to function as an independent adult. As for the dad, my impression there is that as time went on, he really missed Kuina, and nearly losing the chance to ever speak to her again put things into perspective. He realized that his living, breathing child is more important to him than the hypothetical son he thought she'd grow up to be, and didn't want his last words to her to be to never come back.

Kuina is my most favorite character. You pointed out most of the things I liked about her: the outer carefree and buoyant attitude and the inner depth, strength, and humanity. I like your "the bad's weakness makes the good person stronger"!

I also love how the writers didn't make her being trans her whole personality. She's written really well

I think there is also a key point that should be acknowledged in her actual love of karate Due to her love of it (at least based on the poster in her room) it is reasonable that she did admire her father's strength, which is why she imitates his stance in the final exchange. Despite his hate she was willing to accept the good things he COULD offer her and used them instead of completely rejecting her past with him. I also want to say that, while it is inarguable that he was an abusive monster at home, full contact dojos just like the one in the show really are a thing and you sign up for them yourself knowing what they bring. So it really is a question of if Kuina decided to join her Dad's dojo or was forced to, in determining if what happened in the dojo was really abuse or not. Mas Oyama, during his original time teaching Kyokushinkai (the style he created, the name meaning THE ULTIMATE TRUTH, and definitely a major inspiration of the style shown in the show), allowed full contact, bare knuckle, punches (and elbows as well) to the face. He also allowed full force throws and ground fighting. This changed due to the climate of martial arts popularity and because many people simply quit the dojo. Some of the offshoot dojos (not to be confused with offshoot styles) of kyokushinkai maintained the full art (Goju Ryu with Okinawan wrestling/Old-school Goju Ryu + Shotokan + Kodokan Judo, full contact striking and grappling). The vast majority of them still allowed pulled-punches (still making contact bare knuckle, and often as the intensity rose, the punches became full contact) to the face and elbows to the body (few schools allowed elbows to the face since they are far harder to pull and cause cuts often), and many still did practice at least SOME grappling. The grappling of kyokushin (the main branches especially) mainly left after the death of Mas Oyama, but offshoots still carried the tradition (another big factor being that Kenji Kurosaki, the star pupil of Mas Oyama, abandoned the grappling to create a form of kickboxing which Jan Plas would learn in the japanese mejiro gym owned by Kurosaki, bring back with him to amsterdam, and teach at his new Mejiro Gym in Amsterdam, birthing Dutch Kickboxing). SO basically, what the father did IN THE DOJO is not completely abnormal and may not have been abuse (what he did at home DEFINITELY was though). However, the fact that he expected her to punch him in the back of the head, let alone FULL FORCE, IS pretty crazy. It does, however, also seem to demonstrate that those are simply the house rules. Thought that should be somewhat clarified and that this info would be helpful.
