Emperor Palpatine was a man of extremes, when he gained complete control of the galaxy, he lost sight of the very things that help him take power. Governance is far more than just destroying your enemies, it's also about creating a more stable society, economy and political environment. Today we take a look at what roles private security had to play in keeping the citizens of the galaxy safe.

What I love about Andor is that it made the random minutia of the early and middle empire so interesting. Corporate security, court reforms, security jurisdictions, prison labor, local festival restrictions, all of it felt really important both because the characters saw it as important but also because we got glimpses of the bigger machine at play. The show's theme was really well summed up when we saw the parts Cassian and his prison comrades were forced to work on being assembled into part of the death star, it's not just about the one big tyrannical moment, it's the million tiny infringements that build to it that matter.

it really shows the why of why would anyone be a rebel. Rebels live hard lives, lonely short lives, with no expectation of reward or merit. They feel like they are only a thorn on the side of giant, event their greatest (early) heroes did things like destroy a single gozante out of a fleet of 20, or defeat a single squad of stormtroopers from an entire battalion.

The corporation is clearly not paying its Ferix workers a lot but they supplement their income by taking home the occasional piece of valuable salvage. The corp could clamp down on it but the losses from employee theft are probably minuscule compared to the cost of maintaining a proper staff of supervisors and security guards. It also means that any attempt to crack down on the black market would significantly affect the standard of living of their workers and cause massive unrest. They obviously learned that lesson long ago and took a hands-off approach to Ferix. They do not want to spend the resources to improve conditions on Ferix but are smart enough to avoid making the conditions worse.

Syril Karn was actually mistaken in what his duties actually were. He thought his duties included investigating crimes, and perpetrators to justice. @@jeffreycarman2185 He reads like a corporate HR hire transferred there for "promotion experience" (And totally not just because corporate needed another min wage warm body), he read the corporate manifestos, the training manuals, the "how to become a better worker" pamphlets, he is on the company socials agreeing with the PR posts hoping the CEO sees him one day, just waiting for his hard work to be seen for that promotion he was promised many cycles ago. Everyone else from the office feels like a local hire, trained as a min wage part time worker between school or their other job and some liked it and stayed for full time because the pay is ok, but the benefits and vacation days are hard to beat. SGT tactical blueberry is a lifetime security guy, promoted one step above his best level after doing something the company actually saw, hes overwhelmed and unqualified, but not bad enough for demotion or firing. @@jeffreycarman2185 He though that he was a police officer. He was actually a "peace officer" and his job was to keep the people of Ferix from being too pissed off a the corporation. The show does not really address it but the people of Ferix must have had their own informal police and justice system. At the beginning of the series Cassian appears to be on some sort of "probation" because he has been not paying his debts and might have stepped over the line on some of his cons. I imagine more serious criminals would get a form of community approved vigilante justice (ie a rapist found castrated in the town square) The corp security was there to make sure the interaction between the corporation and the people of Ferix went smoothly. Actual law enforcement would have been seen as an unnecessary and costly waste.

The beauty of good narrative is having solid minor characters to provide a counter point to frame a main character- the mundane reaction of the supervisor frames Cyril’s serious and extreme views - we understand Cyril immediately as most of the people around him are just trying to make a living - the Rebellion and Empire are both extremes that many do not want to be involved in - the supervisor like many just want to get by - this is a great perspective as traditionally in less developed narratives we only see the extremes.

I think you did Dedra and the Corpos a bit dirty here. Ferrix was left in the hands of Tigo, Dedra was there only to direct the capture of Andor. Most of the measures that were enforced were ordered by Tigo. Also the violence erupted because of him, not Dedra. Dedra even removed the sniper teams when they were discussing the plan on the balcony, since she thought it was a bad idea to shoot when there is a crowd. Also the blueberries looked well trained. Had a plan to box in the suspects, instinct to recognize suspicious civilians and not just say "nah...let her run, I don't get paid enough to chase people that just run when they see me...", had tactical movement when crossing open terrain, use cover, set up on-the-fly ambush of fleeing suspects (if the speeder was not a bomb) and good aim to disable the engine. Their only problem was lack of discipline when they shot the boyfriend and also when the first team engaged Andor and Luthen before waiting for the other teams to converge and surround the building. And lets not forget, if it wasn't for plot armor, even with only one team of four security officers entering a well-prepared ambush (bomb at the door) and engaging two career criminals that know how to fight, Cassian would've been shot there for good, instead of wounded.

Good video Alan - a nice return to form. Intelligent analysis with a link to real world problems. The scene is Andor (0:28) reveals a lot about the coping mechanisms of the wider Imperial ecosystem. When the supervisor closed the doors for privacy and gave Cyril the inside details re: "what is expected of him"... it was a brilliant summary of the measures that mid-ranking functionaries adopt to stay under the radar. Cyril is wonderful character for his confounding mix of naïveté and cunning. Ideologically driven he genuinely sees something in the Empire that his preceding generation know doesn't exist. This is another reason why Disney need to give this franchise more respect - and invest in a proper second season ... not a multi-year anthology: the themes they are wrestling with are 100% linked to IRL present day ... a world where the ideologically driven ignore the red flags of misappropriated power and the real threats to pluralistic liberal democracy.

Those are the beaurocrats which produce nothing, but they have great managerial skills, the merchants with the ability to create great economic prosperity, the prists which introduce moral and ethical values in a society and lastly the warriors which provide security and peace. Usually the question is what is the best class, but reality impose on us how to balance each class in order to have a decent society. As for a source to explain the relation for these classes better than what I can in the comments I suggest going to the youtube channel Pilgrims Pass at the video discussing the 4 types of dystopia.

Something about their uniforms, like the specific blue and red colours, remind me of late 19th Century French Uniforms, the same that the French wore in the early years of WW1.

@@brettcarter5954 But I think the biggest issue is that most people don't understand Star Wars conceptually and only see it for its affectations like the Jedi, lightsabers, Rebels, Empire, etc.

Economic/ social schools of thought can on average have better or worse outcomes, but they matter much less than specific individuals. A lot of risk/reward dynamics. The correct answer is always contextual, rarely as easy as taking the moderate position.

Another thing to consider about the Empire taking over from Pre-Mor. Not only did this trigger an open rebellion in the populace, but odds are it also converted some of those laid off Pre-Mor security forces into rebels too, along with the corporate weapons and vehicles that the Empire had no use for. Like you said, they were probably getting better benefits and pay than a Stormtrooper and we see how after losing their jobs, people like Syril end up in less satisfying, probably less lucrative positions. Sure, Syril has the demeanor of a proto-fascist, but all those cereal-eating lazy corpo operators probably won't make it in the tightly run program of the Imperial military or paramilitary sectors. Even Syril himself seems to be realizing the flavorless disciplinarian reality of the Imperial bureaucracy isn't quite what he was expecting.

Oddly enough, while I think Andor is *the* greatest show (not just Star Wars) to come out since The Next Generation, I can't stand Rogue One. I probably wouldn't have watched Andor if it was not for your channel and the many vids you had done on it up to that point--it piqued my interest enough to give it a shot, and I was hooked by the end of the first episode. The writing, dialog, and direction are nearly perfect. Only the spinning-laser-freighter scene could be clipped out without losing any meaningful shots.

I worked security and knew a guy who literally did what Syril did with his uniform - he got it tailored on his own dime and had custom rank insignia stitched on when they made him a "senior officer" which was basically just a bullshit title they'd bestow upon guys with long tenure at the company who didn't (or couldn't) get a real promotion to sergeant. He was the sort of stereotypical gung-ho Paul Blart type who had a chip on his shoulder for failing the police exam and just like Syril he'd go way overboard trying to aggressively enforce the most trivial rules and infractions which caused shitloads of unnecessary incidents and paperwork. Naturally everyone hated him and he eventually got "laid off" for having too many complaints lodged against him.

I thought the modified uniform was a bit underrated. In the military you are "subtely" encouraged to have your camo uniform tailored. HOWEVER, if caught with a tailored uniform you will be chewed out and told you are in vioation of an order. Its a weird middle ground. Here however the guy added piping and pockets which would be considered completely out of line That being said tailoring is typically dependent on rank, if a low rank does it they might get chewed out. If a staff nco does it then it will probably be ignored and if an nco does it, then it depends on who wants them promoted, a bald first sergeant wants tailored uniforms, one with hair will chew you out for tailoring your uniform. The trick is to have it tailored only a little, enough to make someone question it and allow you plausible deniability.

The blueberry mode of security and policing just did not match with the doctrine of the empire though, even though it worked on ferrix and in their sector in general. Palpatine wanted the heavy hand and the ability to send in an isb agent and be able to find his most wanted. The strong arm of the empire is what created the strong will of the rebels. The search for andor radicalised the people of ferrix

The Irony is that i think that Hyne was competent in his Position. He know his People. He did know if force would be needed. At the Beginning he wanted to ignore the dead of two of his officiers. But they were at a Location that should not exist and would cost more that they normally should have (Corruption) and there wasn't any hint that they wanted to shout it down. I think they would'nt be able to, even if they wanted to, but i think Hyne did know that. But the Situiation did show that they were corrupt, which Hyne did'nt want to be let know. I think if it had been some Person like Kane ; who had been killed. Hyne would have reacted. Simply because he wasn't inkompetent or Corrupt.

Yes, the apathy, laziness and general indifference of these mall-cops (live and let live attitude) was more effective than having the Gestapo ISB take over and run things with an iron fist. You hardly ever saw the security guards, but the ISB and troopers were up in your face every day. More top-down leadership leading to a disaster.

My thing is that when a single corporation OWNS THE PLANET, putting any significance on its peacekeepers being corporate employees is kinda pointless. Technically yes, they are like “mall cops” but there’s literally no other options. For all intents and purposes they’re the police now, they do police things now. They aren’t just “sit and observe” polo shirts with a taster. They’re armed, armored, trained and organized.

So, correct me if I'm wrong, does this mean that a combination of the corporate security force's hands-off attitude and general lack of overall lethality is what kept the Rebellion from gaining too much traction on that planet?

Was Palps worried the Rebels an Galaxy wouldn't take them seriously an bust out laughing on site?? Especially if blueberries an the concept of such jokes is ALSO a thing in Star Wars...
