I don't think its necessarily lazy to use animals as reference. The xenomorphs from the Alien movies are based on wasps, for example. One crucial factor is the alien's voice. Imagine how better TPM would have been if Jar Jar didn't speak English like Chewie.

There's using something as a reference, and then there is just copying it almost directly. When you have an animal from earth and you just make it humanoid, it doesn't really feel that alien anymore. Just becomes a 'lizard man' or 'shark man.'

Geonosians which are somewhat based off termites. Some of the species featured in the clone wars are also aquatic such as other fish and manta rays. As far as I can say, it’s not too much of a bad idea they used earth animals to make their aliens. Kinda gives a small feel towards home.

Awww, you missed the Lepi like Jaxxon, how could you forget the star wars bunnies. They also had 1 or 2 skunk species... i say it like this because they are both called the same thing, but drawn differently one had a fluffy tail, the other didn't, they both however had skunk spray and stripes. Rishii owls, Amarian Vulpine (fox/canine). And of course, like all things in star wars, writers changed things as they saw fit for what ever. So take the Lepi... they ranged from no tails to bunny tails to rat tails... went from normal colors to green. Yep. they even did Bucky O'Hare in starwars.
