Gotta agree with you Alan. Despite the mass centralization of the government and the economy, it seems the Empire suffered just as much as the republic for being a bloated bureaucracy. It is also worth mentioning that if the Galactic Empire was able to improve the lives of the average citizen, then so many people would just stay with the empire instead of rebelling. Instead of trying to rule by a doctrine of fear, palpating should have instead enacted reforms for the empire that he knew the republic had needed before. It seems like palpating just forgot about his political machinations after becoming emperor. He could have went about it in a more tactical and cunning way

@npswm13143 жыл бұрын
Ok here is the problem. Only Palpatine and his closest confidants knew the true purpose of the Death Star. And it wasnt for handling no dirty rebels. It was for fighting the threat he KNEW was coming. The threat that Thrawn told him about. That he spent his entire political career preparing for. The threat he was preparing the galaxy to deal with. The Vong. Every single Imperial decision boils down to this ultimate purpose. To stop and defeat the Vong from ever touching the galaxy. And Palpatine knew exactly how to do it. And so he did. And people resisted because they couldnt (OR wouldnt.) see the wider picture. Hence the rebellion and his attempts to crush it.

Fairly accurate; all bark & no bite. There are two “military first” doctrines that, according to me, exist. The first is the obvious & its mentioned multiple times & we’ve seen its practices. But the other is what I would call Standardization. The United States of America’s interstate infrastructure is a perfect example of standardization; each lane on an interstate freeway has a specificity set width & is usually two lanes wide & its fenced off. In due time, I want the U.S. Army’s engineers to have a monopoly on the Interstate Roads & Rail-Lines as a means of distributing goods & services. The same goes with the U.S. Navy setting standards for harbors & the U.S. Air Force setting standards for Air Ports. However, the real reason, information shared by those three, is the knowledge & understanding of what weapons are under development, even bolting a railgun on a flat-bed & deploying it to a strategic location, & such…

1. The outer rim is huge. So you could never realistically make sure everything runs smoothly for the colonist. 2. The inner galaxy is quite comfortable in comparison so not too many people (Or at least the people you want.) would wish to give up such a lifestyle. 3. And this is the most important, that was/slowly is being done at this moment. Thousands of years ago what you suggested happened exactly as you said. It still occurs as well. But it slowed down because the novelty of exploration sort of died down for moving to the outer rim and also, businesses, government entities, and cartels exploit the people of the outer rim. A lot.

On the kind of scale we see in the Star Wars galaxy, I am hesitant to condemn the Empire too broadly for failing to clamp down on most of the issue you bring up. They only had a little over twenty years to completely over-all a galaxy spanning system, still recovering from a devastating civil war, and we almost immediately dropped into another one. I think, given enough time, the Empire would have mobilized its military and subjugated the Hutts -- an objective good, no matter the standard. They made deals with them, sure, but I never got the impression those were meant to last. More domestically, I cannot support slavery or government nationalization, but from what we see most Empire-sided businesses did flourish. That wealth and success was almost all sunk into the military, but success was shown. So I guess it just comes back to whether you think the Empire could have turned things around later once it hit an equilibrium.
@lukedalton2 жыл бұрын
Most Empire sided business thrived like in Russia most oligarch owned business have success, thanks to corruption and totally no supervision so the various business can do as they want regarding safety measure and treating the employee. Not considering the fact that many small business (not in the core naturally) were nationalizated with little or no compensation (and if the owner protested there was the prison) and such asset were later given to friendly business or used directly by the Empire regardless of the ecological consequences (just look at the strip mining of Lothal using slave labor...and sure that the mining guild will have so great profit)

On the one hand, I agree that a free press is a good thing and the criticism of state run media destroying public oversight and breeding corruption is a valid one. That said no country in the world isn't having massive issues containing, controlling, and eradicating Covid. Don't forget that the Chinese has been able to contain previous Coronavirus outbreaks; Covid is just a terrible mutation that defies containment.

Good points but you missed the thing about the Empire that is the greatest threat to it's own citizens, the lack of due process and abuse of power. Even the slightest defiance or disrespect to the empire is decried as treason and answered with unrelenting force and violence rather than investigation or a trial. Imperial officers seem to have the authority to punish anyone below the in the hierarchy or outside the military however they see fit, where is the legislation that supports this? How can citizens support a government that regularly makes it clear they have no rights to be protected only the right to be exploited for the empire's gain?

But its actually ALOT of pioson, I always feel bad for the troopers because theyre probrably not bad people, but they get thrashed around and become complete jokes in the fandom, and just get killed left and right to the point everyone forget theyre people. And with the disney takeover it we dont even get the reformed Empire like in the old Lore that Survived and co-existed with the Republic.

@HolyknightVader9993 жыл бұрын
I still vehemently disagree with your final analysis, Alan. Even if we take only the movies, it's quite obvious that the Empire at least tried to keep things safe. A dirtball like Tatooine had two Imperial-class Star Destroyers patrolling the skies, while under the Republic, a member state like Naboo which had representation in the Senate had no fleet of its own. And those with defense fleets like the Trade Federation and the Commerce Guild had to pay for it out of their own pocket. As any person who knows the history of Han Solo can tell you, the Empire does crack down on spice deals. The reason why you need gangsters to run spice in the first place is because the Imps make it hard for them to get it legally. Han Solo got a bounty posted on him by Jabba because an Imperial starship shanghaied his Millennium Falcon while it was transporting spice, and to not get arrested, Solo dumped all the spice. Which means the Empire IS cracking down on spice smugglers, when everyone's favorite smuggler almost got thrown in the can for spice smuggling. As for Ryloth and slavery, the Empire kinda had the right idea when they started placing military armaments there. I mean, one way to stop filthy pirates from enslaving your people is by installing turbolaser towers to shoot down their ships in orbit. Admiral Rampart was right-under the Republic, Ryloth was unprotected and vulnerable, and they needed to remedy that. Too bad the Twi'lek fighters resisted the Empire and probably wound up becoming slaves again. The Wookiees also resisted the Empire and wound up being slaves assembling the Death Star. When it comes to weapons, it depended on who you were. If you were local security or just a private citizen, weapons like thermal detonators and disruptors were still banned for you. But if you were part of the Imperial Military, the sky's the limit. You can have thermal detonators, disruptors, heavy blaster cannons, handheld proton torpedo launchers, the Empire went with the Duke Nukem approach of letting you use whatever weapon you want to vaporize those rebel scum. The rebels in turn also had loose weapon regulations. Both the Empire and the Alliance used disruptors. The Empire preferred sniper-style disruptors like the Tenloss DX-6, while the Rebellion had Bothan spies use close-range disruptor guns that vaporized targets with a spray of antimatter particles. Which means that if you wanted fancy guns, signing up for the military is the quickest way to get them. As for the economy, while most of Imperial space locked things down for the military, they left the corporate sector and the mining guilds alone. There was still a large sense of private property and industry, it's just that it depended on where you were. If you were in the Corporate Sector, they leave you alone, but in most Imperial planets, you either supported the Empire, or you went bust. Still, most Imperial worlds had a sense of stability, both economic and social, until the Battle of Endor screwed things up and turned the Empire into Somalia. Werner Herzog's character "the Client" talks about this in the Mandalorian: "The Empire improves every system it touches. Judge by any metric: safety, prosperity, trade opportunity, peace. Compare Imperial rule to what is happening now. Look outside. Is the world more peaceful since the revolution? I see nothing but death and chaos." Heck, compare Imperial rule to how things were prior to the Clone Wars, and the same point can be made. The Republic was a parasitic non-government that still expected you to pay taxes and sent in the Jedi if you didn't. The Jedi, God bless them, they were trying to instill peace and order in the Republic, but in the end, all their attempts were failures, since like America in Iraq, the moment they leave, the chaos starts all over again. The reason why Tarkin and a lot of officers despised the Jedi Order's peaceful ways is because they never went far enough to punish guys like Viceroy Gunray, whereas if the Jedi separated his head from his body, a lot of problems in the Clone Wars could have been prevented.

@@lukedalton The Empire actually tried to work with Mandalore. It was only after the pro-Imperial Mandalorians were eradicated did the Empire nuke Mandalore. Also, Tatooine was controlled by the Empire, not Jabba. The Empire spent more to protect Tatooine's skies than the Republic did to protect Naboo, a world with Senate representation.
@lukedalton2 жыл бұрын
@@HolyknightVader999 the empire don't try to work with anyone full stop, the choice is to obey living in fear and doing everything Palpy say (and not even this is a totally safe route) or die. The future for Mandalore if accepted the empire rule was in the best case scenario being the cannon fodder of the empire armed forces while the Empire take everything of value from their planet...aka the same destiny of everyone else. The mighty Star Destroyers in New Hope? They are on Tatooine for only one reason, the droids they are blockading the planet usually they are not there because Tatooine is an obscure planet in the outer rim and you don't waste SD for protecting an useless thing like that. Sure there is an imperial presence but all the media from the old legend to New Canon make clear that's Jabba the one that call the shoot and that the imperial don't care if imperial interest are not touched...because the Empire and the Hutt are in a patnership.
