Dude, the whole point of this scene is the demonstration of how off-rails military forces can be when applied indiscriminately on a civil population to me, the scene is perfect: part of the repressive authoritarian actions that will cause an arrest and an unfair trial with heavy consequences... Of course, in a well managed democratic nation, this should not happen... however, this is the rise of the dictatorship... Andor thinks he can escape and live his life, apart from the situation imposed by the empire, and he will quickly realize that there is no way to escape from the tragedy that lies around.

The amusing part to me is that, despite it mostly just being petty dickishness, the Shoretrooper actually was right. Andor really was acting suspiciously and was visibly trying to avoid notice, because he had been involved in a crime against the Empire. It just wasn't mere petty vandalism or rabblerousing that Andor was guilt of.

There's a dozen different army branches, a dozen more different police branches and they picked the guys notorious for shooting up places, not once not twice but thrice. there were riot police, armed police, hell anyone with specialist training for policing would have been better, instead UK used RUC terrorists and Paratroopers, what a joke.

I agree. The stormtroopers were meant to be elite shock troops, always in combat and never performing garrison duties, as that was what the army was for. So they definitely would act very heavy handed when it came to policing. Also the fact that the whole empire is on lockdown because of what happened on Aldhani, and how Yularen said that even minor offenses will be treated as major crimes really explains 1. The use of stormtroopers in a law enforcement role 2. The troopers immediate suspicion of Cassian And 3. Why he was given 6 years in prison

I think you misinterpreted Taramunds death. The way I saw it, Skeen wasn’t willing to risk his safety enough to continue the cover fire. Part of the reason I think this is because the recap in the new episode specifically shows him ducking back behind cover before taramund is shot. Why does he stay silent? Taramund runs out into the open because he thought Skeen would have his back, when he was really only looking out for himself.

1:46 no, no. Skeen had a dlt-19 which could have easily done the job of covering taramyn's rush (a rush is a real military movement technique) with it's high fire rate. Skeen did not get pinned down, he could have sprayed the army troopers with ease, but he cowered back after firing a single shot.

@saintcynicism2654
@saintcynicism2654 2 жыл бұрын
It's the "Bureau of Standards" because that's what it does, it standardizes everything across the galaxy. Especially the many different units of measurement. It's not dystopian, it's bureaucracy in action and probably one of the few parts of the Empire *not* up to some shady shit (and DEFINITELY one of the only ones actually performing a vital public service that benefits everyone). Do you have any idea how nightmarish it would be to try and schedule a freight shipment from Coruscant to a planet halfway across the galaxy orbiting, say, a binary star system with a different orbital period and rotation speed while incorporating several additional stops in other systems along the way if there wasn't SOMETHING in place setting agreed upon definitions of what an hour is and how many are in a day? It'd be like trying to take the train during your morning commute only to find out each stop along the way uses a different calendar, no two places think it's the same day of the week (let alone the same year), and has a different number of hours in the day. So many different parts of people's daily lives would grind to a screeching halt or turn into an absolute dumpster fire if nobody could agree on something like that.

The Shore Trooper’s interaction with Cassian made sense to me. Years ago my car broke down in a Navy base while visiting for an airshow. MPs show up and kind of act like cops that haven’t dealt with the situation before. Tells me I can’t park there and will have to move. I said it won’t move, the transmissions slipping. He gets all agitated and says you can’t park here and have to drive it somewhere else and then leaves? If Shore Troopers are the SS equivalent, then dealing with common criminals probably isn’t what they’re trained for and so that makes sense to me. Will say that Andor has been awesome so far! Not to mention, claiming that the average US Police Officer is 'trained' is, well, their recent track record speaks for itself. But now I do see that they are like you said; Marines and Rangers posted to local law enforcement positions. These troopers like elite military are trained to not just be vigilant but to also expect threats around every corner. Put them in a resort full of tourists and inquisitive bystanders are now scouts, fright is guilt, and any pushback is insurgency.

I felt the same way. It was awkward how the Shoretrooper just pulled Andor aside out of the blue. Almost like many police personnel may pull over a driver, or motorcycle rider because of what they look like. The Shoretrooper was listening to the action over com and he sees someone roughly fitting the general description of the people the other troopers were chasing and he acted accordingly. Guilty until proven innocent. Once the prisoner was turned over to local authorities, I am sure he just forgot about Andor.

I wonder if the shoretrooper even knew that Andor would not get a proper trial and by detaining Andor he was essentially sentencing him to six years in prison. The trooper probably thought that he was just doing his job of detaining suspicious people and the rest would be sorted out at a level above his paygrade.

_"this is why in America we have _*_trained_*_ law enforcement officers..."_ I was with you right up until this point. Actually, this scene is, sadly, somewhat reflective of police interactions in far too many jurisdictions across America. Too many instances of police being improperly trained to handle mental health situations for example. I do fully get what you're saying though; having combat-trained military policing civilians is a far worse "solution". But yeah, the shore trooper's interaction with Cassian is sadly closer to reality than any of us should be comfortable with.

For me it is more simple than that. This kind of arrestation from paranoid police officer is pretty common even for advanced countries. In my countrie we call it "Délit de Faciès" which can be translatated as "face offense", when you are considered guilty by an officer juste because you look guilty for him, and you can't do anything about it.

Shoretrooper ain’t missing no brain cells ; he just abusing his power & probably arresting many to reach a quota. Also Skeen did get Tamaryn killed 100%. He was handed a DLT-19 by Tam. When Tam was going to go to Vel, there was no enemy fire & both gave the nod. Tam is expecting heavy suppressive fire from Skeen but as soon as he out, Skeen instead shoots 2 single shots & goes to cover early on purpose, then the enemy fires leaving Tam to get shot down. Skeen was holding back the whole shoot out start to finish with single shots. He’s also why Lt. Gorn died. Two enemies on balcony but he doesn’t rain bolts, just 2-3 shots only taking out 1. Why ? To let Gorn stay in open & unable to get to cover on time while more soldiers come rushin from rails. Skeen only needed 2 people to ensure payout - the pilot & the nav

With the benefit of hindsight, I'm wondering if the shoretrooper wasn't being paranoid, and maybe they were just instructed to find the tiniest pretense to arrest people for slave labor. In the very beginning of Andor's prison stay, we hear prisoners remarking that a lot of people are being jailed for no reason, and we saw what the parts they were assembling would eventually be used for.

I feel like this scene flew right over your head there. The whole point was to show a bad cop type situation. The Empire is cracking down on populations, they more concerned with enforcing rules than justice. There were some criminals in the area, he was acting nervous which Andor indeed was. So they swept him up on a little power trip. I doubt that shore trooper gave two hoots if he was guilty or not. I've been fortunate in my interactions with police during my life. Only one started this kind of nonsense with me and another officer was the one who got him off my case and let me leave safely. Young, dating working and school so dead on my feet and driving home. Passed the sobriety test fine, just half out of it. First officer didn't care he had made up his mind. The other stepped in, good guy. Their is more of this sort of thing seen these days, I don't know if it's actually more. Or just that so many now having cameras is shedding light on it. This scene felt like both commentary and comparison to show it was getting worse for citizens. And lets be honest, Andor was nervous because he was a criminal. Anything that makes you pop out of the crowd can draw unwelcome attention, and when security is hunting for whatever reason, they can tend to focus on those folks who pop out to them.

The hardest part of making andor grounded and realistic is trying to show the personality of people in the empire. In old star wars it was just good vs evil.
