This is an old video showing an early version just for testing purposes.
The demo shows an electric start petrol generator that has been converted to start and stop automatically when battery bank voltages drop and rise to preset values(user configurable).

What stops it from short-cycling? With charging voltage applied, the voltage will reach 13.2 long before the batteries are fully charged.

Hi Brian, unfortunately i haven't completed the setup to charge battery banks. My plan is to attach a 200amp 12volt alternator direct drive to the shaft. The circuitry is complete as is regarding the auto start stop functions of the engine, also for the battery bank sensing. There is also another part that is still needed after the attachment of an alternator...a smart charging circuit.

I'm not sure you will get the rpms needed to use a car alternator. Probably would be better to use a 12 volt DC motor as as a generator.

Hello Nick, I know its been over a year you built this but on going through the video I noticed something very important - the choke. You said you were waiting for a solenoid, has it arrived? Have you installed it? That is the one part that prevents this from being a fully automated, remote start system. Hi Nick, great setup great video! Was just curious to know on how the starter motor detects that the generator is online so that it can stop turning the flywheel?

Once the generator starts and revs up...it activates a relay to cut off power to electric starter.

Hi nick, you seem to have the answer to my problem. I haven't purchased a generator yet as im still calculating a figure for my over all project but i understand i need a two wire electric start one with an automatic choke. Question, im planning to use a 24v system would that be a problem? Ive researched a few controllers but most are out of my price range (maybe yours is too lol). IM desperate for some info on the subject if you would spare some time educating me. Thanks

Sorry Conjon for the late reply, just saw your message! Not 100% sure how to do it on a 24volt system. One option is to use the generators 110/240v AC output to power a 24volt battery charger. Other option is to retrofit a 24volt alternator onto the genset.(This might work out to be abit costly) If you have a 24volt charger, I would recommend that option, and yes you will need a 12volt electric start generator with or with auto choke(I have completed my auto choke setup-will post another video soon). I can build the circuit for you when you get your generator, and it is very affordable for what it is meant to do! :)

Hi Travis....it is a very lengthy project. I can however build the circuitry for you. What exactly do you need? Are you after the sensing of voltage to auto start and stop, or just a remote type start and stop. If you are interested let me know more details so i can help you out.

Hi Nick. I'm interested in what you used to get this starter working? is it PLC / Arduino based or did you just use timers and relays to start up? I'm currently working on a project of a similar nature but i'm stumped as to what procedures etc i would need. Diesel Generators are far easier to start remotely it seems, so getting my petrol genny to start up automatically would be a real win.

we need this like yesterday......the honda eu3000is already has electric start so there would be no need to use and altenator....what we need is a solution for the choke and for it to start when batteries get low automatically....we were going to use the generac 5818 but i saw that it burned to much LP .83 gallons at 50% load which means we would have to change a 100 gallon propane tank every 125 hours of run time and that is a lot of work getting to these remote locations...

Most people don't believe that a self running generator will work. well I have one and I need it to turn on only when my battery Bank gets low . otherwise I have to keep going out and turn it on , when things start getting dim or not working properly. it would be nice if when the battery bank got to a certain point the generator would automatically turn on... I can have a set of batteries just to turn the generator on. but I need a switch that sensors when my battery packs get low and turns the generator on. until they are charged back up and then automatically shuts it off.... and I do believe that this will work. I would appreciate if you would send me the information, you seem like a very intelligent man and I appreciate your video it has given me hope that I can make this work..... With your setup.

Oh i am a bit off then :-) Nick, I need to charge 12 V leisure batteries -- 400-600 amperes -- Unfortunately solar not enough -- combinations of limited spaces to install panels and lack of sunshine-- so back up needed a.k.a generator and would like to auto start gen. when no or not enough solar, i also thinking to hook it up to car alternator so the 3 charging sources have to work together preferably in full auto mode. I'm looking at a new DeWalt DXGNR 7000 with an electric start, which I would like to trigger from my Midnite Classic 150, but I may need some interface equipment. I wouldn't want to void the warranty, but you're right, since it's a portable, it doesn't have an auto-start feature.

AJ W well its up to you whether you want the added function vs warranty. I am working on a complete setup. Automatic start of generator with quick 120amp charge via alternator and 3 stage smart regulator. wifi connected to send readings to mobile app and error alerts to email.

First I do need to consult with both Midnite and Magnum to see what automated processes are already available, as well as DeWalt when I can get someone on the line that knows their product line.

+Shamir Kayum Hi.....yes you can set the voltage limits. You will need a charger for your battery bank from your generators 110/220volt AC output. You will also require a 12volt DC output from your generator for the auto start/stop setup.

Basically, i bought a typical Firman Generator, i think it's a 3,650 watt, electric start with remote start fob..... I'm bolting it down in the back of my utility truck, and have a 60 amp battery charger hardwired into a 6 unit battery bank....... I am unable to purchase an AGS switch, due to supply chain issues..... So after seeing your video, it looks like i could DIY an AGS switch from relays and voltage monitors..... Purpose: Batteries get low, i want a voltage monitor to automatically turn on the generator, until the battery bank is at proper charge, then turn off the generator.....and the entire system to run automatically, without any help from me

I think this would be cool in a vehicle with a gas gauge that could alert u by setting an alarm on it say you drive from a gas station and know how many miles yer gas gauge could have it where u could preset it to alarm u so if yer generator run off the cars gas tank yer car would alarm u when u need to drive to a gas station or rv ext think it would be nice cause you could use the vehicles battery for stuff...
