What is the point of including the table of nations in Genesis? Is there anything in this chapter we really need to know about?

Interesting fact: when the settlers migrated across the plains in North America, they encountered many native tribes. Problem was that the settlers didn't know how to speak their language, and to them they all appeared the same when in fact there were hundreds of distinct tribes with their own language system and cultures. As a result of naming confusion the settlers, without caring to document for accuracy, started generalizing the tribes based on territory and the closeness of the sound of the tribes names to one another. An example of this is the state name Kansas. Ethnographers called the eponymous Indians the Kansa, and the native people called themselves the Kaw. The city known as Kansas City was taken from Kansas Valley which was originally Kaw Valley. Some settlers even called it Can City and even named a tribe of Indians there Can. Along with Canips, Ka-Anjou, Kamse, Konzo, Quans. The settlers also confused Kansa with Acances, Arkansaw, Excanjaque, Okanis, and Ukasa tribes. The real problem was mapping. Because whenever they encountered another dozen versions of tribe names they would have to change more things than just maps and phone directories never can an image of Karsa be the same as that of Kathagi or even Kunza tribes. From what I read there are 140 ways to spell Kansas, and if you include the confused Ac-, Es-, Ex-, Ok-, Uk- forms at times applied to the tribe, I've found 171 variations that employ every letter of the alphabet except b, f, and v. Kansa and its forms have been translated as wind, windy, wind people, south wind people, those-who-come-like-wind-across-the-prairie, swift, swift wind, swift river, swift water, smoky water, fire people, plum people, disturbers, troublemakers, filthy, and cowards. Dispense with the freak translations like the last four, and you have a people defined by three of the four ancient elements. Six full-blood Kansa, all men and all but one over sixty-five, are still alive but none of them can speak more than a few words of the old language; they use almost exclusively the word Kaw for their tribe even though they know their parents called themselves Kon-say; the n comes out almost as a w and the second syllable nearly disappears, so that you can imagine an illiterate French trapper believing he heard "Kaw." The six surviving natives accept "People of the South Wind" or "Wind People" as the meaning of the name, even though the Osage and several other now separate tribes belonged to a bigger Siouan group living in the upper Ohio River Valley. Here are the 140 variations of the name for the Wind People as homage to their richness: Cah, Can, Cancas, Cance, Canceas, Cances, Canceys, Cancez, Canceze, Cancezs, Canchaz, Canchez, Canci, Cancis, Canes, Canips, Cannecis, Cannes, Cans, Cansa, Cansan, Cansas, Canse, Canses, Cansez, Canssa, Canza, Canzan, Canzas, Canze, Canzee, Canzes, Canzez, Canzon, Caso, Cau, Caugh, Causa, Cauzes, Caw, Caws, Chanchez, Chanzes, Chonsa, Consa, Consez, Conzas, Ecanze, Guaes, Guas, Ka, Kaal, Ka-Anjou, Ka-Anzou, Kah, Kahsah, Kamissi, Kamse, Kan, Kançake, Kanças, Kance, Kances, Kancez, Kanees, Kanisse, Kanissi, Kans, Kansa, Kansae, Kansais, Kansars, Kansas, Kansaws, Kanse, Kansea, Kansees, Kanseis, Kansers, Kanses, Kansez, Kansias, Kansies, Kansis, Kanson, Kansus, Kantha, Kants, Kanza, Kanzan, Kanzans, Kanzas, Kanze, Kanzeis, Kanzes, Kanzez, Kanzis, Kanzon, Kanzus, Kaos, Karsa, Karsea, Kas, Kasas, Kase, Kathagi, Kau, Kaus, Kausa, Kausau, Kausaus, Kauzau, Kauzaus, Kaw, Kaws, Kawsa, Kawse, Kawsies, Kawza, Kay, Kemissi, Kensier, Kenzai, Konaz, Konsa, Konsans, Konsee, Konsees, Konses, Konsez, Konthe, Konza, Konzas, Konzo, Kunza, Quans, Quaus, Quonzai. Seeing these factors play a huge role in recorded history and lost history. From this alone I can understand how the ancient Hebrew may have encompassed many tribes to a certain name, all in order to document names and locations plainly. If they were to discuss a certain tribe name, they will probably know the other associated tribes to that name without disclosing it. It may be common knowledge to them, it may not.

You also have to remember that “philistine” is derived from the Hebrew word “peleset,” which also meant “invader.” It doesn’t mean a specific people until the later sections of the Old Testament like Jeremiah. So, it might not refer specifically to a singular group of people, but a general group of people known to the Hebrews for coming to their lands and assaulting them. This, of course, fits in well with the Greeks like the Minoans and Mycenaeans.

The messiah is allover the old testament and at very important times aswell. For example Exodus 17.10+. Remember people moses took the STAFF of God. We know his arm got tired. 1, why not change hands 2, why not use the rock as a prop 3, why didn't Aron and Hur take turns in holding up his arm up. There was a number of ways of holding up the staff. It ended with moses appearing as a human crucifix in faith. If I'm not wrong it's the first time in the old testament God actually commands for the event to be scriptured. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

Your take on Nimrod potentially not being a literally son of Cush is interesting. As an Assyrian named Nimrod, I always thought the context of the "Nimrod passages" in Genesis 10 was a bit odd and out of place. Also, adding him would throw the numbering off to 71 instead of 70.

Yes. Ashur is the father of the Assyrians, but Nimrod seemingly helped build up most of the early cities in Beth Nahrain (Mesopotamia), which includes Assyria. Genesis 10:8-12 8 Cush fathered Nimrod; he was the first on earth to be a mighty man. 9 He was a mighty hunter before the LORD. Therefore it is said, “Like Nimrod a mighty hunter before the LORD.” 10 The beginning of his kingdom was Babel, Erech, Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. 11 From that land he went into Assyria and built Nineveh, Rehoboth-Ir, Calah, and 12 Resen between Nineveh and Calah; that is the great city.

I really like how they tried to explain origin of all different nations. But it's sad that this genealogy was used to justify racism for hundreds of years and probably even directly inspires peoples' unscientific concept of "race" to this day. The Curse of Ham also further fuels the twisted ideas of many (it was common defense of slavery by plantation owners in USA, for example)

It's also important to note that it's not necessary to believe all humans literally purely descend from Noah but come from other people groups who descend from unrecorded genealogies or at other times the descendants of Noah mixing with unrelated unrecorded lines. To draw attention how the diversity of nations were not descendants of Abraham but that the Moabites and Ammonites have been called sons of Abraham symbolically not biologically. And so many diverse nations may not actually descend from X Y Z progenitor, but get lumbed under the label as a vague distance umbrella term. A catch all term for the literal descended tribe but also neighboring races they are not related too nor have significance. Such as this, it's highly improbable that Scandinavians, Britons, Koreans, Khoisan or Cherokee have direct or pure descent to Noah. But might descend from other mix lineages, or even have no and zero absent ancestry from Noah all-together. Or even not related to Noah through a cousin or a line of Adam. So some might not even descend from if any of Noah's family let alone Noah if they're not related to Adam. If at least not purely. Such examples would be the Andamanese who's been there for 200.000 years if not longer that they can't possibly descend from Adam. But who might be symbolically called descendants of Ham or Shem depending on how the Hebrews cared to signify it. As non black people can be hamitic but black people statistically might be more likely called as such despite coloration and lines of descent bot being exclusive. Or that likely Andaman might be called Shem. As features are a note of climate not ancestry. Except as merely a likelihood. Not all brown or white or black people literally descend from Shem, Japheth and Ham. But a lot of statistically are more likely. But not exclusively to themselves nor in exclusion of others. I'm saying the table of nations and tower of babel refers to local descent not exclusively global or humans in general. But a separate specification that's not inclusive to the given of all humanity. I note the Afro-Asiatic genepool that closely follows Afro-Asiatic languages and Anatolian Neolithic dna in southern Europeans. But never the world. Which if true following agricultural genetic patterns shows the noahic line mixing with other lines. And only follows the agricultural revolution and dispersal of Afro-Asiatic nations who mixed with other nations. Such as extinct branch of Afro-Asiatic in Cordium culture southern Europeans mixed with Indo-Europeans. Or still existing Semites, Amazigh, Egyptians, Cushites, Chadians, and hausa and other Afro-Asiatic groups who's phenotypes don't match lines of Noah descent but do match climate and mix descent not pure descent. Which makes ludicrous the claims of humanity being universally Noahic in descent. If following Afro-Asiatic genetics is the correct thesis. My 10 cents. I believe the verse which speaks of the “earth was divided” pertains to the literal earth or land and not people. Continental drift. Moses recorded the "specifics" of our origins according to God's dictates. Reading what is written is what God wants us to know and believe. To speculate on the "nuances" brings doubt to our minds and tempts us to not believe that the word "son" actually implies a biological connection. Too, for example, the phrase "forty days and forty nights" is not merely an expression for "theological purposes." Because Moses wrote historical narrative, this is to be taken literally.

IP, are you aware of the Book of Jubilees Chapter 9? Given cultural context of the Bible is key to understanding its meaning, and given that Jubilees dates to c. 200 BC (which means it likely much older, because of a c. 700 BC Jubilee calendar discovered identical to the calendar found in Jubilees), have you considered what ancient Jews believed about Genesis 10:25? I love your work, don’t get me wrong. However, Jubilees 9 says that in the days of Peleg (six years after the Flood) “Noah divided unto their sons in the presence of Noah their father” the lands of the Earth they would inherit (v. 14). The only ancient Jewish position on the meaning of Genesis 10:25 was the position found in Jubilees, which prophets and apostles like John the Baptist and Paul certainly read. It’s about Noah’s sons, not farmers and nomads. Even more troubling for this Genesis series (which I love) is that Jubilees clearly states the Flood was global and that the only humans alive after were Noah’s family. It says that all of humanity lived at the base of the mountain of Ararat until they moved to Shinar to construct a 3.4 mile long (5433 cubits) Tower to reach Heaven. God knocks the Tower down, confuses all the languages, then reveals Hebrew to Abraham (telling him it is the language of creation, Enoch invented writing with it, animals could speak it with humans before the Fall). So the Babel incident comes after the division, not before. That’s why it’s placed after. Again, given that cultural context is everything here, how are the claims of this video congruent with ancient Jewish belief? For example: If Moses or Paul were here today and we asked them if the human race descends from one man or many groups of lower hominids, what would they say? Be honest with yourself. Would they really say, “The Lord didn’t actually make them ‘male and female’ at the beginning. He made them long after the beginning, not as men, but as beasts destined to be men.” Is that really what they would say? Or would Paul say something like Acts 17:26, “From one ancestor He made all nations to inhabit the whole earth.” Stuff like Adam being the first man, a worldwide Flood, the division of Peleg being about Noah’s sons, etc. don’t appear to be mere theological positions but believed as literal history by the culture that recorded these stories. Even if Jubilees isn’t Scripture, it still shines an important light on what ancient Jews believed about Genesis. I trust their views more than a modern scholar, given they’re lightyears closer to the source. I don’t know if you’ve read this comment or will, but if you have thank you. It would be amazing for you to cover / clarity this matter, given it’s importance. God bless🙏

Why are Christians obsessed with the idea that God made a covenant with them? God can love the nations of the world and deem them important without having made a covenant with them, which He didn't. The covenant He made is exclusive to Israel, which is forever charged with being a light to the nations. If God made a covenant with the nations of the world then why and how have they failed repeatedly, much worse than Israel, in idolatry of every form imaginable? Their sins make that of the nation of Israel look mild in comparison.

The new covenant is a covenant of grace. there are different types of covenants in the OT. Abraham had a one sided covenant where God made a promise to bless the nations and Abraham didn't have to do anything. In the Mosiac covenant it was two sided. If they were obedient, they were blessed and if they were disobedient, they were cursed. The world is dividing into those with Christ or against Him. His second coming will be the final judgement.
@sonofblessed
@sonofblessed Жыл бұрын
@@philotheoapolobrendon4207 I understand the idea of many covenants, but the covenant that God made with Abraham required obedience as well. Our sages teach that God gave Abraham ten tests of _obedience,_ the first starting with the injunction for Abraham to leave his home (Genesis 12:1), and last in the command to sacrifice Isaac (Genesis 22). While Abraham was _certainly_ called to faith, so I agree with you there, he was called to live a life of action as well. This implies that his potential refusal to follow God's instructions means that the covenant that God made with him was certainly not one-sided, i.e. it required (and was based on) Abraham's acquiesence. It was not a free gift. For example, this seems relatively clear in the first test, in which God says to Abraham, "And the Lord said to Abram, 'Go forth from your land and from your birthplace and from your father's house, to the land that I will show you. And I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you, and I will aggrandize your name, and [you shall] be a blessing.'" If Abraham had not followed suite, we can imagine the opposite to have been true, i.e. if he did _not_ leave his land he would have _not_ received the blessings. My point is that it seems to me that Christians often overlook the action aspect of Abraham's life even though it's right there in the text. This is not necessarily their fault because we all do this, i.e., seeing only what we assume is actually in the text. Nevertheless, it makes a huge difference. What are your thoughts?

The problem with Protestants is that their Western scholarly approach is disconnected and alien to that of God's formation of his people in history (from Adam until Christ and through his Church in history until the present), but they can't see this because they assume everyone is a disconnected alien limited to the "sources" for their knowledge. That aside, it is interesting in this genealogy that descendants of Ham are sometimes Indo-Europeans, such as the Ludim and the Hittites. I think it is the patronymic connection, and not the culture or language of the people. An example of this are the Bulgarians, named after a Turkic tribe that conquered them, but they are Slavs speaking a Slavic language. The Ludim and Hittites (of Ham) are Indo-Europeans along with Gomer and Javan (of Japheth) living in Asia Minor and the Greek islands. Interestingly, the Philistines, or sea-peoples, are indicated as the descendant offshoots of the Ludim. History has recorded three names for these Philistines: Pelasgi, Pilishti, and Ludi. The first two are descriptors of what they do: they pilot and travel the open flat seas. They came from the mainland of Asia Minor as the Ludim were subjected by the Egyptian Hamites, and they formed another group that settled Greece and its islands. Pelagos in Greek means the open sea, perhaps taken from their language. In fact, the word plain and related Indo-European words, such as the Slavic pole, describe this flat sea or plain. But only one Indo-European language has -ski and -shti endings for their adjective and participles respectively, and corresponds with the name Ludi as the main body, and that would be the Slavic language group. Curious. The Hittites and Ludim (Philistines) will play a large role in Israelite history, along with Javan. Gomer and Javan are the Celts (Cymru) and Greeks respectively. The Hittites or Hatti are the Goths (Getae), and the Ludim are the Slavs. Russians and Germans! Not much has really changed in history, except that the Indo-Europeans have been replaced in Asia Minor by the Turks. And who is Magog? This means the land of Gog, a usurper king Gyges yet to be born in Asia Minor, who will seize the throne of Lydia, kill the king and marry his wife. This Antichrist is a kind of a usurper to Christ, and may be seen as Lenin and the Soviet Union replacing the Russian royal heir of the Christian Roman Empire. Yet, this did not unfold quite as the final Antichrist. The Romans were said to be from this land of Troy, and thus Revelations considers the Romans to be Magog. Magog is yet to be. NATO?

when you look at what Paul is saying in his letters, it states clearly only the children of Isaac can receive the promise,.. This is why the scribes and Pharisees were persecuting them, you see the scribes and Pharisees were actually the children of Ishmael... and Paul was basically saying they were not included.. Galatians 4:28¶Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise. 29But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now. 30Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman. Also note.. Paul wouldn't write people at Rome, telling them those things, if those people were not the"northern House" the remnant of the bloodline of Isaac.. Romans 9 7Neither, because they are the bloodline of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy bloodline be called. 8That is, They which are the children of the flesh,= Ishmael ) are not the children of God: but the children of the promise=( Isaac) are counted for the bloodline. 9For this is the word of promise, At this time will I come, and Sara shall have a son. Note, Paul in Romans 99 refers you to this prophecy.. Genesis 17:21 But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, which Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year. Now in doing this,Paul is making it clear they are Abraham's promised seed or bloodline through Sarah, would be the only ones to receive the promise

I think that the Bible describes a table of religious followers and not really a group of family in literal meaning. Because if you will line up those in our current historical and archaeological findings, it won't fit to any nations at all because we all know that during those days, using scientific predating, these names and figures didn't happened during the last Migration period of men nor it doesn't fit before any period before the establishment of the Egyptian Old Kingdom which can be the basis of the Old Testament. Most biblical terms as we know them, were not that written with a straightforward meaning particularly those who wrote the Old Testament.
