I've seen Genesis twice, first time was in 82 at the Fabulous Forum in LA with my good friend Jim and his brother. They were responsible for turning me on to the best prog rock I had ever heard. After I joined the military I kept listening to everyting they released and wanted to see them again. I got my chance in 94, and took my wife to see them in Sacramento and play the "we cant dance" concert. I'm still listneing and keep coming back to some of the best music ever made. After losing my wife of 39 years to cancer, it has brought me some solice when I need to remember the goods time we had. Their music is timeless, I'm 60 now and it just keeps getting better!

The greatest introduction to one of the greatest rock albums of all times. In my interpretation, Duke is actually a concept album (disguised by a few radio friendly pieces) that tells intertwining stories of several connected characters, Albert being the most prominent. All of them related to failure, disappointment, decline, lack of purpose, mediocrity, and unfulfilling lives. Duke is a musical and lyrical masterpiece!!
@andrehill95362 жыл бұрын
I'm not going to say it's the best Genesis album but the Dukes Piece music is very good. I would have preferred they had put them altogether in a single sequence rather than splitting it up with the fillers. If they had then I think the whole piece would have been serious competition to, and yes I am going to say it, Suppers Ready.
@DanielTapNose2 жыл бұрын
@@andrehill9536 I agree with you. As you may surely know, it has been speculated that the band at one point considered linking together Behind The Lines, Duchess, Guide Vocal, Turn It On Again, Duke's Travels and Duke's End. I also think it would rival Supper's Ready. Stretching it a little more, I think adding Man Of Our Times after Guide Vocal, and Cul-de-sac after Turn It On Again would make perfect sense, both lyrically and musically, becoming an even grander suite.

This album was the bridge between the proggy Genesis (my favorite) and the more pop-oriented Genesis. I think it walked a great line between the two iterations and really showcased approachable music that was still complex and different than anything else out there at the time. This was probably their last great tour as well that ended up as Three Sides Live.
@rejapgee6 ай бұрын
Three Sides Live was recorded on the Abacab tour.
@DanielBobke6 ай бұрын
@@rejapgee That is mostly correct. The UK version of the album contained live tracks from 1976, 1978, and 1980 as well. I agree that it was mostly the ABACAB tour, but I still believe that in that time frame was the primary transition from the proggy Genesis to the pop Genesis and those early 1980s tours were the transition.

@@DanielBobke As someone from the UK, I am fully aware of the difference between that and the international release. I was merely questioning your claim that Duke was their "last great tour", as you were referencing performances from the following one. Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where, uh, Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Christy, take off your robe. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. Sabrina, remove your dress. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism.

My favourite album is Wind and Wuthering. Perfectly put together in my opinion and I think Steve's departure had a much bigger impact musically than Peter's. As for best concert that's more difficult. I'd have to say Knebworth 1978 as it opened with Eleventh Earl of Mar and ended with the Dance on a Volcano/drum duet/Los Endos trio which is the best end to a show ever. It also had Fountain of Salmacis which is one of my favourite lesser played Genesis songs. The only downside was we were at the back of the crowd so couldn't see much and some of the sound was a bit dodgy in the night air. I also went to see them at Hammersmith Odeon on the Duke tour where I really could see them and I would have to say that was also a favourite concert. Opened with Deep in the Motherlode which is a powerful opener like Behind the Lines and ended with the Dance/Drum/Los Endos again. Of course in the middle they did Duke's Piece in full which is much better.
@MrHead652 жыл бұрын
I would also have to go with a Hammersmith Odeon gig, September 1982, when they did a warm-up for the Gabriel reunion gig at Milton Keynes due the following month (Six of the Best). They used it as an opportunity to revisit a lot of the old material that they hadn’t played for quite a while by then. Stand out for me was Supper’s Ready. I remember that gig being better than Milton Keynes. It was indoors and the PA was better. The MK gig, although legendary, was famously soaking wet; Gabriel forgot a lot of his lyrics and generally gave the impression that he’d rather be somewhere else. Also hated that Jonathan King was allowed to introduce them, thereby allowing his pumped up conceit surrounding the origin of the band to pervade. Boy, did he relish that… Fave album: it changes, but either Selling England or Trick of the Tail. Chuffed to discover recently that the audio of the Hammersmith gig is on KZbin. Check it out. 😊
@andrehill95362 жыл бұрын
@@MrHead65 I went to the MK gig and yes that was horrendous weather wise. I am wishing I had seen the warm up now. The most memorable thing about Six of the Best was when they did Turn it On and Solsbury Hill with Pete on drums for Turn it on. When it goes instrumental half way through Phil went on drums too. The increase in power output was immense. I know many people credit Tony with the Genesis wall of sound but Phil also helped a lot.
@MrHead652 жыл бұрын
@@andrehill9536 I’ll go back to the bootleg on YT and check that out! I do remember it being quite a moment when they both drummed together. Amazing intro. Saw them live many times. Nothing like hearing this live. On a different note, the last good album that they produced.

Though I have a PhD in musicology, I still wonder how music can be this amazing.

Collins embracing his love of the big band sound with this opener. The album has aged well although I wasn't sure about it at the time.

I'm still a little unsure about it, it's a good album in parts but I personally thought there were too many slow Collins-inspired fillers.
