35yrs and still dealing with pain of an abusive stepfather and mother. Physical and emotional. But that's ok. Cause it gave me what I needed. Married for 20+ years. Father of 3. Oldest is 20, youngest 11. Still at their side. And married to their mum. I'd rather be rich than wealthy.

Phil Collins confessed, that he misstyped on his Iphone back in the 1990s, as he was texting his friends about the band name: „Hey Guys, what about calling our band Genesis (instead of Geniuses).“ The iPhone was shocked by this mistake and turned into a standart-keyboard phone again to avoid such mistakes due to touchscreen. Then Apple came and took this idea and re-invented the iPhone again. Happy days!

This song means alot to me. Phil Collins is one of my favourite artists from this era.. My family went through domestic violence and we all, Mum, brother and myself left him behind, but like in this song my Father blamed us, he was never wrong, right up to his passing 4 years ago.. I gave him so many chances to appreciate what he did to us, but never did. I wrote him off and didn't speak to him 3 years before he died.

Well the key to my survival Was never in much doubt The question was how I could keep sane Trying to find a way out Things were never easy for me Peace of mind was hard to find And I needed a place where I could hide Somewhere I could call mine I didn't think much about it 'Til it started happening all the time Soon I was living with the fear everyday Of what might happen that night I couldn't stand to hear the crying Of my mother, and I remember when I swore that, that would be the last they'd see of me And I never went home again They say that time is a healer And now my wounds are not the same I rang the bell with my heart in my mouth I had to hear what he'd say He sat me down to talk to me He looked me straight in the eyes He said: You're no son, you're no son of mine You're no son, you're no son of mine You walked out, you left us behind And you're no son, you're no son of mine Oh, his words how they hurt me, I'll never forget it And as the time, it went by, I lived to regret it You're no son, you're no son of mine But where should I go, And what should I do You're no son, you're no son of mine But I came here for help, oh I came here for you Well the years they passed so slowly I thought about him every day What would I do, if we passed on the street Would I keep running away In and out of hiding places Soon I'd have to face the facts We'd have to sit down and talk it over And that would mean going back They say that time is a healer And now my wounds are not the same But I rang that bell with my heart in my mouth I had to hear what he'd say He sat me down to talk to me He looked me straight in the eyes He said: You're no son, you're no son of mine You're no son, you're no son of mine When you walked out, you left us behind And you're no son, you're no son of mine Oh, his words how they hurt me, I'll never forget it And as the time, it went by, I lived to regret it You're no son, you're no son of mine But where should I go and what should I do You're no son, you're no son of mine But I came here for help, oh I was looking for you You're no son, you're no son of mine, oh You're no son, ha yeah, ha yeah, ha yeah, ha yeah You're no son, you're no son of mine, oh, oh

Respect to all survivors out there I left home at 13 in 1997 been through more miles and more lifetimes than most people could even imagine I appear like a grizzled grown man with a story but inside I'm just a broken kid that needs love and never got it even as an adult.

I feel you. I ran away from my father's home age 13 in '93. Never went back. Found my mum, spent 9 months with her 14-15. Had to leave there too. Was passed around extended family like unwanted baggage till I found my home on the streets of Byron Bay age 15-18. A lifetime of violence, abuse, neglect, abandonment- scars that others can't see but that haunt me day & night & have caused unbearable, seemingly never ending suffering. I'm 46 now, I feel I've lived a thousand lifetimes, & experiences most could never understand & that generally I wouldn't wish them to experience. Now & then I come back this & similar songs - I guess just to find comfort that some one somewhere also understands... ❤ to all who do!

This song touches my scars... I am the eldest of three brothers and I always felt responsible for them, our father was an alcoholic and violent man; he was looking for any excuse to leave the house and go drinking. Many nights, we spent not knowing if he was going to be okay, or if someone would come home in the morning to bring us the news that he had died... in one of his usual bar fights. When he arrived at two, three or four in the morning, my mother always waited for him (she loved him despite everything), undressed him and helped him shower, and gave him a plate of hot food. No matter what I did to please my father, he never seemed to be happy with me and never missed an opportunity to let me know, it was common for him to make fun of me and say something hurtful. He always let me down, breaking his promises. With time and the advancement of his alcoholism, he became more violent. I remember once, on Mother's Day, after giving to our mom a gift, suddenly and without knowing why, he punched her in the face and left her with a black eye. I started to wish at night that he wouldn't come back to our house... and I stayed up many times, because of my brothers and my mother, because I was scared for them, and that made me stay alert. Sometimes, crying, I asked God to take him away and never come back. I loved my father... but I couldn't take this situation anymore. One night I heard him arrive... And then there was only silence. My mother hadn't stayed to wait for him that time, and she was sleeping. But hearing nothing, I had a bad feeling... I went to my parents' room and found him on top of my mother, trying to force her to have sex. He was holding her by the neck and hitting her, but she didn't stop fighting. What could I do at that moment? He was a thirty-five year old man and I was only thirteen... I ran towards him and rammed him; I hit him so hard with my shoulder that I knocked him off the bed. I don't know where I got the strength from. He got up furious and wanted to hit me, but the shame took over him and he started crying, he dressed quickly, apologized to us and left the house. I never left my home, as the protagonist of this song did. I stayed to take care of my mother and my siblings, and as soon as I was old enough to work I took care of everything. My father left us permanently, at that moment, he abandoned our mother and left. Many years passed before I was able to forgive him. I recently started talking to him again. We don't have a great relationship, but I still have affection for him. Time and the ability to forgive can heal a man's heart.

i lived through the same with my father. he was lost in his addiction after leaving the paras, spent many years overseas leaving my mother and me and sister alone. turned out my mother was a bit of a flirt and i was left alone and my sister had to raise me. i once caught my mother giving oral sex to my sisters boyfriend. i was 7. my parents seperated and i went with my dad and step mum and my sis stayed with my mother. my dad got better thanks to my step mother. he used to rob my piggy bank for scotch. even got a evening job at the pub he drank in to pay his bar tab. so we moved away. he is sobar now. but as a young child i missed my dad. im only now getting him back

Constantly told, he hated us. Remember hearing this song at 10yrs old, on a Sunday morning in Australia, whilst staying at his place. It certainly hit home. Tough to listen to, but it’s a very moving song.

In and out of hiding places Soon I'd have to face the facts We'd have to sit down and talk it over And that would mean going back They say that time is a healer And now my wounds are not the same But I rang that bell with my heart in my mouth I had to hear what he'd say He sat me down to talk to me And he looked me straight in the eyes He said You're no son, you're no son of mine You're no son, you're no son of mine When you walked out you left us behind And you're no son, you're no son of mine Oh, his words how they hurt me I'll never forget it And as the time, it went by I lived to regret it You're no son, you're no son of mine But where should I go and what should I do? You're no son, you're no son of mine Well I came here for help - oh I was looking for you You're no son, you're no son of mine oh You're no son ha yeah, ha yeah, ha yeah, ha yeah, ha yeah You're no son, you're no son of mine Oh, oh Oh, oh Oh, oh Oh, oh Oh, oh Oh, oh Oh, oh You're no son of mine Oh, oh Oh, oh You're no son of mine You're no son, you're no son of mine Oh, oh Oh, oh Oh, oh Oh, oh Oh, oh Oh, oh You're no son of mine Oh, oh Oh, oh Oh, oh Oh, oh Oh, oh Oh, oh Oh, oh Oh, oh

Violence can be verbal as well, had the most loving dad in the world, unfortunately we lost him when he was just 42 to cancer (The wrong parent died) , mum was loving but unfortunately very controlling, shouty angry n mad and could be very physical especially towards my younger sisters , until I got to be about 12 and could stop her, but then mum would tell dad and I had to face him in the the other room, but dad God bless him knew what mum was and he would pretend to shout at me whilst smacking a pillow or cabinet and I would pretend to scream n cry, I'm sick to death of hearing how we must be respectful toward women as boys n men, love them care for them treat them right , yet all my life nearly 60yrs I have seen women be violent or instigate it then play the victim or woman card , stopped seeing mum 10yrs ago even at nearly 80 she is still the same , stopped seeing her for fear I would hurt her for all the torment and crap she has caused and the division in the family through her actions and ability to make people believe she is telling the truth and right , but hey as a man I suppose its all my fault .

I had to play this song because I'm besides myself... That boy who flew the 'plane into the mountain side is "no son of mine"... Oh, the emotions that come too late... 'Scuse me for reaching out, but there must be others who are horrified and God only knows how false I feel because I have to carry on living and cannot give that boy the hiding of his life before he could even think of hurting others... Oi... My heart cries for and with you... but it doesn't change anything... lots of love... Thanks for posting this song... Much appreciated...

Raine, Though I do sympathise with your point and comment, it is very valid, However, We must also take into consideration his state of mind, Some one must of noticed something odd about him, To take you own life is bad enough, but to take your own and take company with you is horrific, Far too many memories of 9/11 for me, The sad fact is this lad was not in the right frame of mind to ride a push bike, never mind fly an aircraft with 150 people on it, A very tragic and sad state of affairs, My thoughts are with the family's who lost loved ones in the needless tragedy, But you are right, No son of mine is very apt

It's a new day for us all and time drags me onwards... Thank you for your shoulder... These things... mmmm... I have strength to go on... Oi... :-/ I can only cling to my Faith in these days of mine...

Raine Carosin Have Belief Raine, Trust in your soul and your God, whoever you perceive him or her to be, Be strong, Life is full of challenges, Hopes and despairs, But belief in yourself and your faith Will carry you through, I know, I am that Soldier, I have been in some very dark and dangerous places in my life, seen, done and witnessed things no young man should see or do, Mankind can be cruel and heartless one second and full of compassion and understanding the next, This Tragic event shows that this young man was in a very dark place, but did not have the strength or belief in himself to get through the dark to the sunlight, There is always hope, never stop believing in yourself or the belief that there is light at the end of the tunnel, believe me, there is always light, just be patient and fight the demons, you will win in the end

My Father actuary said these words to me. He is now dead and I am 64 years of age. When he said them, I was a mere teenager so they did not hurt. Yet they do now. I know he did not mean them literary I am too much like him but yet so different. It’s a shame we never reconciled and learnt to understand each other better.

I love this song, but it chokes me up....'' but I came here for help, oh i was looking for you'' and still got rejected by his father for walking out in the past. I feel so bad for the son, lost and confused living with the regret for running away from his abusive father. Even after obtaining the courage to return. His heart in his mouth as he pressed the bell.....just damn......brilliant song writing.

I can relate to all of this. My father was an abusive alchoholic and time never healed my wounds... I did not even visit him at the hospital when he was dying of cancer, or went to his funeral. Now he is dead, buried and I am still numb and wish I had a father who was able to show he cared in his living years... (I am sure he wanted/did) Its no hope of ever getting that fulfilled. All I can do now is to try to do the best for my own sons.
