A masterpiece sadly deeper than even some in the early Genesis audience. Tony Banks' writing is so fantastic on this album. He's always been good but he covered the diversity of the journey in the story. Who else has even tried? Floyd, Yes, and Genesis all have brilliant writing - yet completely different moods - Yes never did anything melancholy or drenched in self-reflection, and Pink Floyd wasn't necessarily very classical sounding I suppose. But Tony Banks pulls out such diversity, at times dreamlike, lost and romantic, providing rich and varied cinematic backdrops. And considering the finale of the album, it perfectly fits and encapsulates the tale of disintegration and reintegration.

I will happily argue this is one of the finest recordings ever made. It had a profound effect on me initially and for these many decades. And I have bought it a dozen times and given it away as many, like a great book...

The Lamb has always been my favorite ever since i was a kid. My parents had the 8 track of it. and before i was even 12 i ended up with a copy of the record. still to this day. could very well be my #1 album of all time. as much as everyone says Darks Side Of The Moon is the best album of all time, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway tops it and knocks it out of the park!

Now 40 years ago, I heard this album as a teen in the mid-late 70s. It sounds better to me than ever, and I keep hearing new things: new twists in Peter’s lyrics, some bit of brilliance from one of the players I still hadn’t noticed. But for me, the King-the mastery was really achieved on the DRUMS by Mr. Phil Collins. It’s a GREAT drum performance on all of it-musicality, sound, the tone of those double-head Gretsch toms of his, his touch, his uncanny groove crafted with such care and balls and passion… All of the playing is great by this whole band. But Phil on drums is KING of THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY. (Disclosure: I am a drummer and a lifelong Collins fan, and a jazz drummer back in New York City-in the Bronx. THANK you Genesis for this epic work.)

Ok The LAMB is in my opinion the greatest album I have ever heard.....To every GENESIS fan who reads this ..If you want to see a live performance of the entire album you must see the youtube video of the ROCK ORCHESTRA performing this.. So much talent in this band. Their solo work has proved that. I suppose the split was inevitable for them all to have creative 'room'. However, this is my favourite album. I get a high just reading Gabriel's lyrics without any music. But the music was beautiful as well. All four sides. I just think it's a masterpiece. My favourite album by any band ever! Well done lads! This has brought me much joy for many years gone by, and years to come!

It was either the late 70s or early 80s, or both, when I used to hear The Lamb (title track) on FM radio. I didn't know who Genesis, didn't care, but that song was so very different. It was like grandiose hard punk rock. People used to crank it up.

The first Genesis song I heard was One For The Vine, I was ten at the time, and it completely blew me away. I listened to the whole W&W album over and over again, and it became my favorite album. Then dad bought the Lamb to me; I remember sitting in the car on the way to our cabin with the Lamb pouring in over my headphones. Again I was completely blown away by Genesis, and I had a new favorite album. Now, ten years later, I know them all by heart, and they all blew me away one by one.

If you watch this whole 4-video series, he does brighten up toward the end. Also, I appreciate his honesty-it’s refreshing to me that he doesn’t gush on about the greatness of the good old days or whatever. Brilliant people can be complicated, also. Not that I would know (hahaha).

To me it seems like two distinct camps for Genesis fans... with Gabriel and after. I had friends that did not get into Genesis until Pete had left...I thought this was the pop era for Genesis. The Lamb, Selling England, Foxtrot....this was the true art era and I still love these masterpieces !

Listening to the interviews it really becomes apparent how correct the decision was for Pete to leave and the band to continue with Phil out front. Both parties actually gained from this. Pete's solo work is terrific and the next probably four Genesis albums after he left were just as good. The Lamb is a great album that's difficult to get into at first, but it represents the high point of their time together. I don't think there is any way they could have topped it with that line up.

You see i never thought TLLDOB was difficult to get into at all,i remember coming home from work the last day of the week Friday with the album tucked under my arm put the 1st side on then mum shouting upstairs 'your teas ready',i went down had said tea and went straight back to my room to listen to sides 2,3 & 4. The strange thing is i always listened 1st time to an album with headphones on but not this time laid on the bed,door shut and volume as high as i could get away with.I played this every day except one the day i saw 'costume for sale' headline on front of NME,but carried on day after.Here we are 46 years later at 66 and its still my all time favourite album by anyone.🥰👍

Love how pretentious people get about anything post-Lamb. It's completely missing the point really and I think people should just try and understand that the eras of Genesis are completely different and enjoyable in their own ways. That being said, I think the Gabriel-era was certainly their most creative and enduring but there's nothing wrong with enjoying the Collins-era either. A Trick of the Tail, Wind and Wuthering were comparable to Foxtrot and Selling IMO, and the pop stuff is solid.

Most friendships have an expiration date and Peter/Tony hit theirs on Lamb. They grew apart, had different interests and different visions. It's too bad the classic 5 couldn't reunite after their successful careers for a couple tours or an album. That they only reunited for a performance in 1982 is a damn shame.

[part 1] I just love all these guys, like dear beloved Uncles or something. When we're younger and we have more time(..), certain music/albums can become so relevant and thematic to our lives. Every one of Genesis's older albums is like that for me, and even some of their solo stuff. They are so atmosphereic and really put me somewhere. Even if this or that work bookends a sadder part of my life, I'm so lucky that I liked such good and visionary music to bookend it!

I saw the Genesis show at the Auditorium Theater in Chicago for the "Lamb" tour. It was a great show. It was very much a classically inspired show with great visuals but it was clear that the band who played well together, were not happy together. They played two encores and Peter was very physical on stage. The audience was completely moved by every song like a new composer was introducing a new work. The album was released a few months later.

With Burford on drums on that tour, the band did their bows and goodbyes to the audience but they didn't look at each other. They were all quite separate from Peter as well. He seemed like he had already told them he was quitting the band.

Phil's Genesis and Phil's Genesis with Steve Hackett are not the same. Yes, they lost great lyricist and to achieve the right formula, kept the fairy-folk-fantasy themes in their songs, but you can't ignore Steve's involvement in Trick and Wind albums. It's absolutely unfair to ignore his input. Again and again I see people saying 'Phil's Genesis' meaning whatever they recorded after Peter - even if it sounded like classic Genesis.

Phil never take the reins of Genesis. You can see on the differents interviews that's Banks that have the last words. So if it's true for Gabriel era, it's true for after too. People blaims Collins because he was the frontman after Gabriel but I don't think he was the problem. Phil even claim that he pushes Tony and Mike to play old stuff on tour a lot of time. The problem is not Phil. And I feel like a lot of the progressive music in the next album (Home by the seas, Fading Light for example) come more from Phil than Tony or Mike.

I love "The Lamb" and remember when it came out, I think the reason why it wasn't a "hit" is simply because, the hero did not have universal appeal .. not many people could identify with him - a hoodlem in NYC ... - just my opinion

Phil Collins was NOT in any way the leader of Genesis and he didn't bring them to record commercial stuff.. Proof shows that Tony and Mike (especially Tony) were the leading parts of the band. If the music didn't sound like Tony wanted, he'd have thrown a tantrum. For all the respect I have for this musician, I'm sure that he was the top 1 reason why Peter Gabriel left.

Mr. Gabriel was not that much of a musician as the others (at that time), he says himself he was more interested in the visuals. Indeed, his on-stage acting had become impressive around the time of SEBTP already. So there was a conflict of interest. On one side there was the imaginary man and on the other side one of the most proficient and virtuoso bands around that time. From this perspective it seems logical Mr. Collins saying the lyrics have gotten in the way. Breaking out was so it seems the right decision for Mr. Gabriel. It might have worked with a break of 2 years or so, but that was not to happen. I just wish that everyone could stop blaming Mr. Collins. He did his mistakes but as a singer and drummer he is a giant. I myself am not very interested in the post Gabriel area (to some extend except the next 2 works). But to me it is clear Genesis survived because of him. I even heard that it was him pushing the others for playing more of the edgier stuff all so often, and Mr. Rutherford and Mr. Banks wanting to play the pop stuff.

The Lamb and Topographic Oceans are comparable says Steve. Both kind of nearly destroyed their respective bands. Pete Left Genesis. Wakeman left Yes. Maybe Pink Floyd's The Wall and Songs of Faith & Devotion (Depeche Mode) were also band breaking albums. In every case the bands carried on and went to greater success, more or less.

As I understand it, Peter's solo career was running a little under the weather by the time of the "Melt" album, and he had financial difficulties, so Phil was willing to drum and do backing vocals pro bono as a favor. Lending credence to the financial issues was the fact that PG actually got dropped by the record label he was on for US distribution after it was made.

Sorry to tell people here, the big musical divide in the Genesis career was not Pete's departure, but clearly Steve's. A trick of the tail and Wind and Wuthering are closer musically to the preceding albums than from Then There were three on (afaicr it was in the TOTT interview part that Peter says that he was often complimented for that album though he wasn't on it).

It has become a cliche to mention "any" double-album and postulate that it would have been stronger as a single disc. I detested the era when CDs became the industry norm and artists found out that material normally destined for the cutting floor could now be squeezed onto a new release. Less is more...but I adore The White Album, The Lamb, Quadrophenia, Tommy and The Wall in their double format. As an aside...nobody ever points to Elton's "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" and states it would have been 'better' as a single disc. Kudos to Reg Dwight! GYBR trots out 18-19 songs and NEVER lags.

Finally -- at the end of the interview Tony grudgingly concedes it is a good album. I for one find it almost a white elephant. Most of it is very good indeed, but it gets a little weaker toward the end. Not much happens musically after Slippermen does it? I mean, "It's only know and know all but I like it." What the heck is that? A Stones parody? It's really a bit anticlimactic. Still some of their best work - but not in Supper's Ready or Firth of Fifth league.

Phil Collins sang the Lamb stuff way better than Peter Gabriel ever could. Most notably, "In the Cage" and "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" were infinitely superior when Phil sang them. Plus, Phil didn't run around in silly costumes that made the band look stupid. Phil took the whole thing to the next level and the facts are clear: Genesis was more successful musically and financially when Phil took the reins. A win-win for Genesis fans. Booting Hackett was a good idea too. It worked out well.

I love Phil and his voice and singing but I will never, ever subject my ears to him singing In the Cage - I have done it twice and it is atrocious! There is no feel, none of the intensity, he blurts out the word "cage" in a very flat way, he just doesn't feel the lyrics at all. And why would he - Peter actually did feel like he was in a cage at that point so when he sings the lyrics it sounds real! Or rael...
