@@NicknLex Now you know what it was like at the time - buying Trick of the Tail, after all the previous albums, and seeing it was Phil Collins on vocals, but actually not believing it. Not for a while, anyway. And we'd all (me and my mates) seen them live with Gabriel more than once. Trick of the Tail is a lovely album. Pity none of the other post-Gabriel albums get anywhere close (let's just disagree on 95% of post-Gabriel Genesis). By 1978 I went to see them and actually fell asleep for much of the gig (although we'd actually gone to see Richie Havens - check out his performance of 'Freedom' at Woodstock - who opened for them and was wonderful).

@@NicknLex Yeah, a lot of people get Peter Gabriel's voice confused with Phil Collins'. The guitarist, Steve Hackett, said that when Phil sang backup, it was almost like a live double tracked vocal. It's funny now to think that the band went through hundreds of audition tapes looking for a replacement for Peter before finding that their next lead singer was already in the band!

I would politely disagree with Trick of The Tail being a must from this album. It is considered by many the weakest and most commercial and least proggy (which it became as a minor radio hit) song on the album. That said everyone can enjoy the band and the music however they like. I'd personally say Dance on a Volcano is the premier song choice on this album, followed by Los Endos.

Great reaction to a great song by Genesis. As others have already mentioned this is Phil singing, and is the first Genesis album without Peter. The guitar is a 12 string. Ripples never come back means we cannot get our youth back, and the attractiveness of youth is fleeting and should not be taken for granted. The cover features characters in the songs on the album, this one is the old women looking into the mirror, and seeing a reflection of her younger self. This album and ‘Selling England by the pound’ are probably my two favourite albums by Genesis ( although Duke is not too far behind). The instrumental ‘Los Endos’ or ‘Dance on a volcano’ would be the next tracks to listen to, however if you like some mythology then Squonk ( about a mythical creature that is so ugly it constantly cries, leaving a trail of tears) is good as well.

Nick & Lex you know I'm a big supporter of yours and because of that I just need to let you know that this is the first album Genesis made without Peter, that is Phil on vocals. Anything after this record will be Phil on lead vocals and anything after the next album "Wind & Wuthering" will be without the guitarist Steve Hackett. The music you heard from them in the 80's is just Phil, Mike Rutherford (bass & 12 string) and Tony Banks (keys). The music from those 3 is more pop. So generally speaking anything after Wind & Wuthering is going to lean more toward the pop side with a few sprinkles of prog. Lastly the album cover depicts characters from the lyrics in the album so it's not just random sketches of people. This album and Wind & Wuthering were the last real prog influenced albums they put out and they both are wonderful. Once Steve left the band it lost it's prog and atmospherics roots which (at least for me) turned out to be more vital to the band than the loss of Peter on lead vocals because Phil has a voice in the same register as Peter so it sounds more like a continuation and not a change. In losing Steve and having Mike pick up the guitar parts just doesn't cut it. Mikes a very good bass player but not a good lead guitarist at all. Just some info for you to carry with you on your next Genesis outing. As usual keep up the great work and keep loving each other.
@mvunit33 жыл бұрын
Thank you for pointing out the "characters" on the cover for each track. Whenever N&L get the Lp or CD (booklet), they can envision each character going through their lives in their imagination :).
@markfeggeler34793 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. Rutherford is actually an amazing bass guitarist and with Hackett’s loss they shifted away from the complexities of the seventies into the pop mentalities of the eighties. There were some excellent parts here and there (like the intro suite of Duke) but the experimentation seemed to vanish. And Hackett’s solo career, at least in my opinion, is well worth a visit.
@carlosruiz-ob7le3 жыл бұрын
@MDElam3 жыл бұрын
I hear you. I do think Mike can hold his own as a lead--not A-list, but very fitting for post-Hackett era Genesis (which got me into Genesis--"Domino" and "The Brazilian" specifically). To your point about Mike as a bassist, I agree, and if I may be audacious, I think he's at least as good as Chris Squire and, later, Geddy Lee. As for Steve Hackett, and I may be wrong, it seems he doesn't get as much credit as he should as a rock guitarist--not just prog. He's a great guitarist, which is an understatement.
@markfeggeler34793 жыл бұрын
I’ve been a Hackett fan for 40 years. His last few albums have been fairly derivative, and there are some weak pop attempts from the early 80s, but the overall ambition of his body of work is undeniable. His classical albums (especially Metamorpheus) are sumptuous and several of his electric albums (Spectral Mornings, Wild Orchids, Beyond the Shrouded Horizon, To Watch the Storms) are equally impressive.

The line "The face that launched a thousand ships" is a reference to Helen of Troy, who according to Homer was the most beautiful woman on earth. The line is from the play "Doctor Faustus" by Shakespeare contemporary Christopher Marlowe (he was exactly 2 months older than Shakespeare, and there are some Shakespeare scholars who believe that actually Marlowe wrote the Shakespeare plays. Marlowe seemingly died in a kind of barroom brawl, but these scholars claim that Marlowe feigned his death to escape prosecution for high treason which he was accused of. In the play the line reads “Was this the face that launch'd a thousand ships, And burnt the topless towers of Ilium - Sweet Helen, make me immortal with a kiss". There is reasonable doubt that the historic Shakespeare, who was an actor and the leader of the Globe Theater, wrote these plays because whoever wrote these plays must have been a highly educated man and this actor was not. Marlowe on the other hand was highly educated. There are a few other candidates for having written these plays, like for example Francis Bacon, Edward de Vere or William Stanley. I count myself as belonging to the Marlowe fashion, especially since the first "Shakespeare" plays are very much in the style of Marlowe.

Phil did such a good job of channeling Peter I got confused back in the day, that said, he did backing vocals when Peter was the singer and did a couple of songs as lead even then. When Peter left he sang the songs during auditions for a new vocalist in a teaching role, the rest of the band realised he was the right man but had to convince him to do it as he only thought of himself as the drummer. In order to keep his drum chops active he formed the Jazz Rock Fusion band Brand X, who were/are pretty great also..He only sang once for them, but some of his best drumming..

No sweat on mistaken identity. Their manager, Tony Stratton-Smith, once said that Phil sounded more like Peter than Peter! upon the release of A Trick Of The Tail.

The 70's was the time when we eagerly awaited the records of King Crimson, Yes, Santana, Genesis, Return to Forever and so many others. It was the golden age of my life, it was the time when I was a teenager. Where nothing was written and curiosity and love was everywhere.

You observed well that this track is similar to Firth of Fifth. Genesis managed to portray water movement musically so well :)

He guys love to see you reacting to Genesis again. It is always a pleasure seeing you discover their music. I would love to see you react to something off of Trespass maybe Stagnation or The Knife. Thanks for all your hard work, you have created a great community here.

Great reaction. And our boy, Phil, carried through with this Prog feel. Someone commented that Phil was often singing with Peter, so there is a similar sound. But also, it’s the Prog vibe - that “fairly tale” sound - that makes this still great. Btw, Give Mark anything he wants. Lol. Thanks! ✨🤪

I'll echo a bunch of the nice previous comments. At the baseline, your reactions are great fun. But it's delightful to hear you when you're wrong. I might speak for a few other of my OG proggers when I when I say why: I get to listen to a fresh perception, run through the fresh prog processors of your brains. It is the experienced taking a wistful look back at innocence (and the days before blood pressure medication and colonoscopies). I make no suggestion. It is too much fun watching you navigate your way through the prog weeds ... and encounter a fellow named Smallcreep. Happy hunting, you delightful young persons.

Original guitarist Anthony Philips (he left after “Trespass”) made the 12-string a big part of the Genesis sound. “Entangled” off TOTT is also a great example of 12-strings in a song.

Beautiful song in a beautiful album, but also.... I always thought this was the greatest example of what Hackett was doing in this band. The instrumental in the middle, when you listen closely to his guitar plaintive sounds, it's... beautiful and really add a touch of sadness, needed for a song about the short-lived beautiful physical appearance. Hacket was rarely flashy, he was just completing Tony Banks piano, often melding with him, and thus creating a beautiful sound for Genesis.

It was my first Genesis album and always remained the "heart" of all the G. albums I've bought. Their '77 tour is still one of the best things I've ever seen on stage.

Speaking of Rush, I don't believe you two have reacted to anything off of Fly by Night yet, "Bytor and the snow dog " is a must, it's long overdue considering your love for them, Neil's debut album, and he makes his presence felt on this tune, lyrics and all. Thanks for all your reactions, they spark great memories ❤

Many people gravitate to this song off Trick of the Tail, but the two powerhouse performances are really Entangled (feather-on-water singing by Phil Collins and delicate guitar by Steve Hackett) and Dance on a Volcano (heavy and dramatic featuring everyone spectacularly).

This is the song that got me into Genesis. I was 14 years old when this came out on the radio. I remember riding my stingray bike 5 miles in upstate NY to the record store to buy the LP and hoping it wouldn't get caught in the spokes on the ride home. I was into Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Rush, etc. at the time. I didn't like the whole album at first, but kept listening. I dove in deep and never looked back. Genesis is by far my favorite band and has been for the past 48 years. It's really great to see younger people get into and appreciate this era of music. Like you said the 70's era of music is timeless and still dominate today.

After Peter left, they were auditioning new lead vocalists and in the meantime, Phil would rough the vocals. In the end, they couldn’t find anyone who sang it better. Once they worked out how they would tour, initially with Bill Bruford on drums, then Chester Thompson, they stuck with Phil and the rest is history. The song is about aging.

Another great reaction Nick and Lex...I remember we were really wary when Peter Gabriel left after "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway". Then they produced what remains one of my favourite albums of all time with "Trick of the Tail". I love the sketches that represent each of the tracks. My personal favourite is "Entangled". The chemistry remained, it was when Steve Hackett left that I stopped listening to Genesis.

Also, even though I love this whole album, I will reiterate what another commenter said that the first and last cuts are standouts- BUT!!! DON'T LISTEN TO THE LAST ONE UNTIL YOU HAVE HEARD THE REST OF THE ALBUM! You will understand why after you do.

That's one of the reasons that Phil was such a golden follow up. By the way, what a very rare situation: the (awesome) drummer of a famous band taking over the position from the leaving legendary frontman because there is no alternative. He is singing his socks off, pushing the band further into bigger succes, and becomes himself a world famous solo artist. How wonderous it can be.

I find your reaction videos to Genesis to be so authentic and pure. The observations you make really capture the essence of what Genesis is and the universal appeal of their sound. Even 40-50 years later. Thank you for sharing. A euphoric fairy tale really does nail it when describing the artistry behind these masterpieces. They tell dreamy tales like few others do. And it's super special seeing a younger couple such as yourselves experiencing it for the first time and establishing this journey of appreciating what the older Genesis was truly like for those of us who lived them when they were on the rise. What is so interesting are those moments in a Genesis song that create that 'wow' factor, or brings a tear to your eye, or a smile that is reflected in your faces as you react to it as well. I'm reacting the same way, at those same moments. Genesis truly is genius, especially when you think about how old they were when creating these masterpieces. Ripples is just extraordinary, as is Firth of Fifth (which you also mentioned). As are all of their pieces in one way or another, if not in their entirety. The way they tell a story, and take the sounds and musicality to so many different places in one song is just magical. Just when you think the song could be winding down (which they would if they were popish songs), they take it another direction that is just as majestic....and then they bring it back and seal the deal. It's incredible. Apologies for the longwinded response but you all are just great! And I have to agree with what you said about the 70s. And by the way, is that Jean Luc Ponty on your back wall there? He's another great listen from the 70s!

I first heard this track on a pirate radio station Radio Caroline the week the Album was released and I had to buy the Album the very next day there isn’t a bad song on it at all, To me this song is about time and ageing and a melancholy for what was and what now is as I get older it means more to me.

"A Trick Of The Tail" and "Wind And Wuthering" are two wonderful Genesis albums. It has happened to a lot of people to think the singer was still Peter Gabriel, I guess Phil was trying to sound more like Peter. Phil did a fantastic job vocally in both albums, and musically Genesis are at the top of their game in both of them. (And I´m talking as a huge fan "Nursery Cryme", "Foxtrot", "Selling England By The Pound" and " The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. I know a lot of Peter´s hardliners are going to disagree). Please react to "One For The Vine", one of the tracks in "Wind And Wuthering" and/or "Unquiet Slumbers For The Sleepers- In That Quiet Earth". Masterpieces.
