The best thing about this very first song is that it introduced the whole world to Steve Hackett and Phil Collins and instantly the band was established as a completely different sound. Even though Mike wrote most of the guitar parts already before Steve joined the band, it was still a huge leap.

Hackett's solos on this track established that this was going to be a totally different ride.

Most of the Song was composed by Anthony Phillips when he was still in the band. It was a movement called "F Sharp'. Part of the guitar solo was written by Mick Barnard who replaced Ant for a short time before Hackett's arrival.

You must watch the Belgian TV live in the studio of them doing this a two other songs. It’s incredible and to see them so young is remarkable. Tapping goes way back (1600's) but Steve Hackett seems to be the person who introduced it to contemporary music. This was a wonderful live track back in the day, because the contrasts between quiet and loud were far bigger that can be captured on a recording. People would rock back in their seats ( a bit like 'In The Flesh' live).

I remember my older brother being introduced to Genesis in San Antonio Tx in 76. I heard this for the first time when I was 12 YO, it was pretty mind blowing. Then came all of the records up to that point and learned Peter Gabriel had left. Later the same year I heard Trick of the Tail (which is one of my favorites). They are another one of these bands that defies category. There are a few bands that I will listen to any and every analysis video and these are one, it is amazing to see people react now to music that was my childhood. I refer to the late 60's, 70's the renaissance of Rock and Pop music. I heard it all, everything that was on the radio plus this Boutique music that was not on pop radio: 3 older siblings bringing it all to me. Thank you for taking time to enjoy and bringing me back to my childhood! Happy Thanksgiving

Peter Gabriel began his costume wearing career while the band played this song live (when he came out in a Foxhead and his wife’s red dress,) during the instrumental part to sing the final stanza. Of course he didn’t tell anybody in the band he was going to do this because they would’ve absolutely vetoed the idea. The next day they are on the cover of Melody maker magazine. That set genesis up as a true phenomenon.

Steve and Phil pull out all the stops to announce their arrival in style - as well they might, because they were both stepping into the shoes of class acts. This is my favourite Genesis album after Selling England By The Pound. Every song conjures up a story in the listener's mind using an astonishing range of narrative devices from this macabre ghost story to the rich slice of mythic drama that concludes affairs, taking in a Victorian apocalypse, a Pythonesque breakdown and a Harlequinade on the way. Mesmerising stuff.

Hello, I’ve not commented before. I saw Genesis in concert for the first time in 1971 at Birmingham T own Hall. They were the support act to Van Der Graf Generator. I was 16 years of age and I recall there were only about 200 of us sat on what I can only describe as wooden school chairs. I saw them again several times before 1974, not since. The Musical Box has always been my favourite track, hence this comment. I can tell you other stories of that concert and those times with early Genesis, but I won’t bore you.

Yeeesss! The greatest of the Gabriel era. Nursery Cryme was the first album of the Gabriel Genesis that I bought and listened to and still my favorite. Hope you enjoyed the rest. Creepy song but the music gives me goosebumps from the moment of the screech. Harold The Barrel, Attack of The Giant Hogweed are classic. Peters crazy over the top lyrics were only surpassed by his stage performance. There is an early concert vid from Selling England By The Pound time of them performing this. Not too big on live recordings personally, but it's crazy how good they were at that time.

Again live this is just spectacular. Steve does a brilliant live rendition of this in its entirety. Genesis incorporated this into their old medley on 1992 Tour with The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway/The Musical Box ( closing section ), Firth Of Fifth/I Know What I Like. Again as they had such a large catalogue of music they tended to chop up the old songs into a medley. Still a great early Genesis track and fan favourite.

Musical box is probably the main epic song on Nursery Cryme, with different moods, high and low, on the same album the other epics must be "The return giant Hogweed" very powerful and also the last "Fountain of Salmacis" very magical and mythologic. There is also a little gem probably written by Tony Banks "Seven Stones" full of beautiful chords and then a mini opera with dark humor "Harold the Barrel". "Harlequin" is a nice acoustic song like "for absent friends" but much shorter.
