These guys always put on a great show. Phil does a fabulous job getting the crowd involved. I wish Phil’s health was better. I would love to see them on tour again ❤❤❤

Firth of Fifth is one of the most popular songs of the Peter era. Originally it includes vocals, but in later years the lads decided to play only the instrumental part, which includes what many people consider Steve Hackett’s finest guitar solo - now performed by Daryl Stuermer. If you listen carefully you notice that at one point Chester Thompson joins Phil playing drums. Then they transition into I Know What I Like. Another information: Phil was in pain when he was behind the drum kit, you can see it several times. During this tour something happened which later caused his health issues. And one more fact about this gig. It was in Rome, the last concert of the European leg. Sponsored by Italian Telecom as a so-called Telecomcerto, it was for free. Originally it should have taken place at the Colloseum, but way too many fans from all over Europe travelled to Rome, so they decided to use Circus Maximus where they played in front of more than half a million people. Genesis is the best band ever, and live they were in a league of their own.

A firth is a large estuary (Scottish name). The best known is the firth of Forth on which Edinburgh sits. So firth of fifth is a wordplay. Older Genesis had a lot of songs featuring British rivers, as ancient parts of the landscape that just keep flowing on, despite the comings and goings of the human world through which they flow. It's as if the rivers are detached observers of Man's follies.
@JohnTaylor-cc6tmАй бұрын
By older Genesis I mean the Peter Gabriel era - early 70s. But of course, post Gabriel, they continued to perform their earlier work and still composed some new pieces in similar vein.

They were in Rome. The best part, to me, has been when all the crowd was singing together a melody from Cinema Show. Italians were the first to discover Genesis when they were unknown. Fact.

I saw this show in Amsterdam on 1st July 2007. This was one of the stand out parts of the show along with the old medley of In The Cage/Cinema Show/Duke's Travels/Afterglow. Ripples and Los Endos was amazing too. As they played a lot of the pop stuff from Invisible Touch they had to chop up songs as here with Firth Of Fifth, but it was still brilliant. The Montage of all the old band members on I Know What I Like was great, and it was important that both Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett were remembered in this.

This concert in Rome had 500,000 crowd at the Circus Maximus in 2007. Mind-boggling. Doing that tambourine dance at 56 is pretty damn good. What a charming showman.
@minty_Joe24 күн бұрын
I'm surprised Phil was able to pull off the dance on the tambourine. He was coping with a lot of pain during his 2005 Farewell Tour and this reunion tour. Somehow, he managed to get through it before his back surgery following the 2007 tour wrap-up.
@rk41gator24 күн бұрын
@@minty_Joe I knew he hurt his back around the time of the tour, so that Rome concert must have been painful. It's hard to detect, but occasionally Collins looks a bit grumpy and that may have been the issue. He tended to take 'the show must go on' attitude, sadly perhaps to his detriment. It's funny how some think he can't dance, maybe because of that song and that he seldom did so on stage. He just didn't like 'wiggling his bum'. Not his style. I know he had 'tap shoes' (he showed them once in an interview) and with his schooling in drama, I'm sure they made everybody dance. Plus he was a stage actor as a kid. Vastly talented.

Also catch the original with Peter Gabriel. It is actually longer with an extended flute solo that is almost as beautiful as the guitar solo.

If you listen to Firth from Selling England by the pound you'd not surprise about keyboard melody and, most of all, about guitar melody... That song is a masterpiece, I suggest you the Seconds Out version. This is good, but for Live Genesis go for late 70's or 80's, the energy is unmatched. In the Cage melody, Los Endos, Abacab, Home by the Sea. For the other side of Genesis get the original Firth of Fifth and give it 9 minutes of your life. Then you'll really understand why 1/2 million Italians in 2007 stood in awe at an extract of an album track from 1973.

Firth of Fifth is merely a play on words. A river estuary in Scotland is known as a Firth. In this case the River Forth, not to be confused with the word Fourth.

The English have a fine sense of humor. Sure, make up a song that plays off a river metaphor and then make the title hard to thay. A 'firth' is an estuary and the 'fifth' is an imaginary river (following the River Forth). With all that they still came up with great music.

A firth is an estuary of the river Clyde in Scotland.Saw them live in Glasgow 1976 the Trick of the Trail tour to me it was the last truly great Genesis album although many say it was Wind and Wuthering. Thereafter Phil took Genesis on the pop train!!

WRONG. A Firth is a river estuary ANYWHERE in Scotland. As in the River Forth - not to be confused with the word Fourth.

No offense to other fans, but Daryl Steurmer was head and shoulders above Rutherford as a lead guitarist. I know Rutherford is a bass player at heart and preferred having Daryl take lead. And, sorry, but Phil does these songs much better than Gabriel. I mean the tambourine dance and audience work? C'mon! That crowd was a free concert with 500,000 attendees. Yes, a half million. This song is from mid-70s, around the time that Gabriel left and Phil took over, so it's one of the few where's there's footage of both singers doing the song.
@freefall8243Ай бұрын
The way I understand it is that Daryl played lead on songs that Hackett originally played lead on, and that Rutherford played lead on songs that had lead parts that he originally wrote.

@johncampbell756Ай бұрын
This only the middle section of Firth.
@freefall8243Ай бұрын
I like Daryl Sruermer (the lead guitarist) but not on this song. Steve Hackett was the original player of this solo, and the difference in feel is incredible. Tony Banks (keyboard) wrote the music, but Hackett made it his own. I welcome any Genesis reactions, but for Firth, check out the original recording with Peter Gabriel and Hackett, or Seconds Out, where Phil is singing, but the lead guitar is still Steve. Another great option is that Steve Hackett still tours with his own band, and they still play Firth, amongst many other early Genesis songs that he contributed to.

This was highly edited after a huge mistake on drums by Phil ...Never liked my fav band doing FoF after Hackett left as Daryl "fast fingers" just never got the essence of the solo. It was always about feel, and never about speed and getting as many notes in as possible.

Not the best version of firth of Fifth by a long shot, as it just the middle section of the full song. Also missing the amazing Steve Hackett on guitar who was on the original studio version. This is prog era Genesis from the 1970’s before they became more of a commercial rock band in the 1980’s. Really enjoyed your reaction though, and hope you continue your 1970’s Genesis journey.
