When you hear the songs stripped back like this you immediately see a consistency in the bands writing, despite criticism that they sold out during Collins era. Listening to this compares to the structure of Fountain of Salmacis and One For The Vine; the opening riff, the complex chord sequence in middle, then the bridge, before original riff at the end.

I play both Gabriel and Collins genesis since we have a home tribute band of 1970-1975 genesis. And trust me that 1986-1998 genesis is as hard (if not harder for some songs) as early era. Banks writting is and will always be complex and beautiful pieces. Listen to « an island in the darkness », it was written at the time where genesis was criticized the most :)

@Math Gsr thanks again!! Each time I paid attention to this song, was frustrated to track the "marimba" sound as to figure which was the progression of the notes. First time I can appreciate an "isolated" sound of it.!! In addition to all the interesting comments and to your superb performance, can't skip to mention: nice jacket of yours @Math Gsr!!!!!!. Got confused for a couple of seconds because as I can remember there are no "ceiling" cameras on the 1987 Wembley Concert. Thought was Tony himself on concert!! =) Nice detail!!

I love how you recreated the marimba sound with the DX7, but Tony did not use the DX7. Tony has said in an interview it was the marimba preset from his AKAI sampler (the S950 which was 12 bit) he ran it through an echo (probably the Roland RE201 or some 80s digital model) which gave it that "milk bottle" sound. Still, I love your videos and keep them coming!

During the marimba key clicks I hear a sustained string sound. In the concert video feed it looks like he held down his left pinky finger to carry the strings sound. There’s more going on than the marimba sounds in the beginning.

That was awesome. May I ask where the "Whistling" lead line (main riff) in the beginning comes from?? And also which string patch is used on the Synclavier (arpeggiated riff) and lastly the string line in the middle (5:00) mark.Thanks so much. What a treat that was. How did you enjoy TB's interview??

Thanks a lot !! Very kind comment :) I tried to recreate what you call the whistling sound as accurate as tony did, by combining 3 presets from the dx7 (vibe - marimba - e.piano) with one of them on a lower key. A bit of chorus, reverb and Eq and that’s all :) The rest is a massive use of the Synclavier (100% homemade patches) About the interview, since i’m a huge fan of ARP’S synthetizers, it was a very good moment !

An extract of what Tony had said in an interview: "On 'Tonight, Tonight, Tonight' it's all a MIDI thing with a marimba all the way through...". @Math Gsr had nailed it again, not only on that issue but the entire performance. Superb, again!!

Amazing job! How did you program the DX7? I’ve heard it’s the marimba patch on the original ROM1 presets but it doesn’t sound right when I do it. Also do you know how they did the pad sounds in 1987? I know they used a Taurus but how are they getting chords out of it? Thanks!

It is the marimba, combined with other marimba like presets. I've done this long ago so I can't remember, but it was a crazy midi thing. The pad sound Comes from a pedal for sure, but not sure about a Taurus

let me rephrase. during the main part with the vibes, there are two different tones being played. then when you go to the chorus, they match in unison, but the bass is still up a minor 3rd. could you share the transposition for the dx7 patches you combined?

Salut Math. Merci !!!
@MathGsr Жыл бұрын
Salut Martin !
@martinvoicesynthmusic1732 Жыл бұрын
À date, je crois que tu n'as pas touché à We Can't Dance ?
@MathGsr Жыл бұрын
@martinvoicesynthmusic1732 Жыл бұрын

Were the string sounds sequenced? You don't have a free hand to play them, and it seems Tony Bank's didn't either. This song does sound larger than life at times, but I was unaware he might be using "tracks" in the background. Tony generally doesn't seem like the kind of person that would allow the use of something in the background he couldn't actually play live.
