I'm a Gen Z (18) but the kids who are into "old" music, they're into bands that have alt rock or indie rock sound (like Nirvana, My Bloody Valentine, Pixies, The Smiths, The Cure, Joy Division, The Clash, The Velvet Underground). Mostly 90's and above. Genesis is way too "dad rock" or "dad music" for them. Also no Zoomers knows who Genesis or Phil Collins is anymore. Their fanbase is over 40's while Nirvana have a lot of Gen Z fans. That's why so many 60's, 70's, 80's bands are forgotten by newer generation & are suffering the "dad rock" curse. Unfortunately Genesis is one of them.
@frankmarsh1159 Жыл бұрын
@@gx1tar1er Hey some of those bands are pretty cool. In my comment above I was referring to all the vapid teen pop stuff I hear everywhere these days. The stuff that sounds like 14 year boys and girls singing in falsetto over rickety computer beats. I don't know all the names but I know the sound. BTS , Shawn Menedez and stuff like that. Even some of the stuff they are calling Alternative these days sounds like that to me. If kids are listening to the bands you listed that's cool. When I ask young people what they like a lot of them say hip-hop and classic rock. Classic rock can mean anything from the 1960s thru the 1990s. The era when you had real bands. Before everything started being made on laptop computers. lol.

What a wonderfully and deceptively simple and straightforward song! Though the rythm sounds simple, it's in an odd time signature. And the lyrics, though seemingly only about a guy who loves TV and celebrities is an in depth reflection on how on this age so many people base their life's purpose and self esteem on media content. Brilliant piece of music, a real masterpiece perfectly connected to the overall musical and existential concept which is Duke!!

@JoveCana3 ай бұрын
@@platinum10000 it bridged the gap between prog rock and pop. It made prog rock (which was often considered 'esoteric', 'quirky', or 'academic') a lot more accessible to many more ears. Almost all pop music is straight 4/4 time, but this song has a complicated structure that STILL rocks so hard. Pink Floyd's "Money" did the same thing... it made weird time signatures "acceptable" to more ears. All of a sudden, so many minds opened up to a new sound. You could probably argue music like these, and this song in particular, paved the way for bands like Dream Factory, Mars Volta, Tool and others to be accepted into the mainstream. ALSO: that killer bass pedal on the straight eigth notes became a staple in so many songs in the eighties, e.g. listen to the keyboards in Van Halen's "Jump"

man I STILL love this song so much. It has such crazy good groove, because Phil was SOOO deep in the pocket, plus that killer bass pedal!!! For all the comments about time signature, try counting on the quarter notes. Makes it a bit easier to break down. So, for the main guitar/keyboard riff at the start of every verse: The very first time you hear the riff this it's 4/4, 4/4, then 4/4, 3/4 (total of 15 quarter notes) That phrasing only happens once for the whole song, because every subsequent time you hear this riff it's: 4/4, **2/4**, and then the same 4/4, 3/4 . The riff (except for the first time you hear it) is essentially 13 quarter notes, so you might end up with a different breakdown depending on how you interpret the phrasing. The chorus ("I can show you some of the people in my life") is straight 4/4 time The bridge ("I get so lonely when she's not there") is the trickiest to break down: first time: 3/4, 3/4, 3/4 (the "Get" in "Get so lonely" falls on the 3rd beat of this bar), 3/4, 4/4 second time: 3/4, 3/4, 3/4, 4/4, then 4/4, 5/4, 4/4, 4/4 Then go back into the verse time "Turn it on, turn it on again": 4/4, 2/4, and then 4/4, 3/4. You can also try counting on eight notes (follow that killer bass pedal). You'll end up with the same structure, just in double time because you're counting smaller beats.

@Genesis One Of The Best Album Ever! Best memories of growing up, young love at 14, and life! Loose death everything possible in life to happen to a person? This album is the story of my life! Im crying hearing remastered! I - I turn it on again! This album means the world to me @Genesis @Genesis Not one person could ever understand what it means to me, I don't think I'll ever be able to listen to "Follow Me Follow You" ever again. This will always nail my heart. From such harmless love rotating to painful loose. I comprehend death is final. I then took this in CD form on tour with me in the 90s. This album became the album I wrote my daily journal of whatever band and members things I witnessed. Their pains, joys, and painful life stories Of those, I was around our working with high in music. Countless inducted many tragedies I witnessed solely to describe it as the concern of watching slow suicide, of many the world, loved only to find many of them passed away. An innocent 19 working in the arts with legions Everything one could ask for, or at least I thought. The novel is much more comprehensive than these trilogies. Im working on making a series of all amazements in our world of the arts. The road isn't the nicest of places often. The truths of many will die with me. This album means so much to me it's my personal go-to. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤👍👍👍👍👍 Not sure any album by you doesn't mean anything to me, you'd be shocked knowing how many people in certain Grans hide @Genesis in their belongings . Love to the band and Phil stay strong
