Thank the heavens above for British rock!!! How brilliant all these British artists have been over the decades. Travelled to England from Australia in 2012 and walked the streets knowing that l was in the country that produced much musical finery. The English should be so proud of it's musical history. For me it's definately the seventies, especially the Glam Rock era. Rock on England, you rock and l breathed the air that they all breathed.

What an underrated song by critics, often disqualified as a song that kicked off the so-called pop era of Genesis. Beautiful melody, beautifully sung, great drum groove and bass line, legendary keyboard solo. For me, a song that can compete with Whiter Shade of Pale by Procul Harum - it's up there. I hear that and I am immediately transported back to 1978, and it doesn't seem that long ago, and yet it's nearly 40 years ago. Incredible amount of time has passed by. Unbelievable. 1978 was a time of no computers. No satellite TV. No mobiles. There were only three TV channels in the UK. And VCRs were too expensive to buy so you had to watch TV when it was on. The biggest radio station in the country was Radio 1, and Grease was massive. And I fancied Olivia Newton-John. Ha ha.

I'd say this is the first real 'pop' genesis song and I think its brilliant. I'm a massive fan of the band and hate when people choose to completely disregard the later work with Phil. All eras of this band are great and all of their music is wonderful.
@robertsmyth13139 ай бұрын
Well said...couldn't agree more ...outstanding music through all their eras and regenerations- best band ever imo
@louisbhtanner75039 ай бұрын
@@robertsmyth1313 exactly, its useless trying to delineate between eras and styles when they were so consistently unique and made so much remarkable music :)

What an extraordinary band Genesis were , they really did adapt with the times from the early 70's and cracking the American soft rock market in the early 90's .Phill Collins is a great song writer.
@gordontaylor41843 жыл бұрын
The lyrics were written by Mike Rutherford. There is a tendency to think that songs, lyrics especially, are written by the lead singer but this was not always the case with Genesis; especially after Gabriel left. Most Genesis songs were credited to the band as a whole, no matter who wrote them, though from "A Trick of the Tail" to "Abacac" they were credited to individual group members.

My Mum passed this year and my Dad went about a month later. They were together for over 50 years and he had to go and follow her. This song reminds me of them and my wonderful childhood days of the late 1970's, no modern tech but the best times ever!!
