This looks like a great solution when I need a door opener. My current Genie screw driver opener is 42 years old, and at the time was the only solution because I have a 12" steel beam going across the garage limiting space for an overhead opener, so I was able to cut the screw track shorter in order to make it fit between the front of the garage and the steel beam. It is very loud, but still working for 42 years!

I have a low ceiling as well. I bought this 6172 from Home Depot online and installed it myself. When I got to setting the limits, I found up was down and down was up. At this point I knew what was wrong and there was a disclaimer about low headroom tracks and that this unit is not compatible. It would have been nice if they had mentioned this on the website or box. After talking to 4 Genie techs asking for a workaround they left a message on my phone the next day saying that I’m gonna have to return this unit. I still have the unit installed and really don’t wanna go through the pain of returning it. Too bad the techs all seemed to bot have any real world instal experience. Someone must know of a way to swap around the torsion bar, pulleys, cable and bottom bracket with a separate offset idler to make this work.

We had a two-car garage in our previous home (we moved into our new place 4 months ago). I installed the Liftmaster version on both doors. It was really appreciated as our main floor was about the garage. The living-room vibrated quite a bit and the noise was intolerable when in operation prior to the side-mount opener. What a great change for us and the future residents. Now we are in the process of replacing our 16’ wooden door and I hope to go the same route. I think I’ll look at the Genie version. Seems like some distinct advantages (Wireless, tension sensor). Thanks. Good vid

The vibration is not a function of the controller unless you have an old chain drive. belt or screw type does not do that. If you have a lot of squeaking it can be from the springs or poorly installed or worn out rollers. They have nylon coated rollers now that also reduce noise. These things are not worth the negatives.

You left out the best thing about the wall mounted garage door opener. The wall mounted opener allows you to raise the door tracks higher so that a car lift can be installed in the garage. I wore out two Sears openers due to under engineered design. Tiny drive sprocket wore right through its housing. I decided in spite of the cost of the side mount opener that this is the direction I would go, rather than replace another overhead opener in another ten years or so. I bought the Chamberlain at Home Depot installed it myself. Best opener on the market. Easy install in a manner that makes more sense than overhead center of the door pull style. To drive the spring axle directly is genius. The side mount opener is quiet, has an interface lock, frees up all the space over the door and has battery back -up which works well in case power is interrupted. Also, my existing remotes and the keypad from the SEARS opener are compatible with the new side mount Chamberlin. No track, no chain or belt. No noise, easier on my garage door. Easy to install. Great value in spite of the price. But when you subtract the cost of the overhead door opener from the price of the side mount opener it is only about $200 more. But, worth it.

I have the Liftmaster version. Absolutely love it and will never use a overhead opener any more. The cable tension sensor Genie has is quite unique. The Liftmaster one is just a simple arm with a switch. The switch is only closed when the cable loses tension so there's no reason for the switch to wear out. The only thing that could go wrong with it is mechanical but even if it does, it's only a few bucks to replace. I'm also not a fan of battery powered remotes. Changing the battery is just another thing you need to do occasionally.

First, I'm an overhead door dealer, in business for over 35 years. Chamberlain operators, be they the older Sears Craftsman, Master Mechanic, Raynor, Liftmaster, etc. enjoy excellent parts availability. Most major distributors carry Liftmaster, NOT Genie. Genie was bought out by Overhead Door some years ago, and Overhead Door products have declined in quality over the years (Wayne Dalton merged with Overhead Door - ask anyone who's gone to Lowe's and bought a garage door that's constructed of cardboard with a vinyl overlay what they now think of Wayne Dalton). One thing that struck me about this particular installation was how the Liftmaster was installed. If noise lever was an issue a DC belt operator could have been installed. Moreover, Chamberlain used to offer a "vibration isolation" kit, that can still be found online, that effectively isolated the operator head from the hanging angle, dramatically cutting down on vibration & noise. The biggest issue with Genie is their lack of technical support - out in the field, when I've tried to call Genie for technical assistance, the wait time has been ridiculous. I do not repair any Genie products, nor do most of my competitors. If you buy a Genie product online and run into an issue, good luck trying to find an overhead door company that will service your Genie operator, especially if they didn't install it. If you actually want to learn about operators seek out content from actual overhead door companies that have been in business for over 20 years - we all know something the average DIY'er doesn't.

My Daughter and Son in law have one of these on each of their garage doors. They were installed with new garage doors by a professional garage door company. I believe It is a chamberland it has the cable slack levers. I have been over to their house numerous times to rewind the cables due to the door opener being activated while the car was in the door opening. (grand kids lol) While there was no serious damage to the door, car or opener I have definitely decided I won't be installing these units on my doors. Also there is the issue that the door tension spring has to be biased to allow the door to come down and not be balanced. Which in my opinion is an unsafe condition because when you pull the release cord to operate the door manually the door automatically wants to come down. Those two things are what are keeping me from purchasing this unit.

Never trust a professional garage door company entirely. They often show up, get the job done as quickly as possible then leave. They can do a shotty job. Regardless of which garage door opener is installed, if you pull the release cord, it should not want to come down. The door should be sticky at any point as you pull it up or down then let go of your hand. If it doesn't stay when you let go of your hand, then the spring or springs need to be adjusted. I would have someone knowledgeable check the installation before a serious accident happens.

I bought a house that has a car detached garage but there was only 1 door with an opener. the closest door to the house had a Lift Master opener with a chain drive there was nothing for the other side. on Black Friday the local Home Depot had a Genie that came with 2 remotes, and it had a built in light 3/4 hp belt drive and a battery powered keypad and the safety openers. with wifi for $75.00 so i bought 1 and installed it. I couldn't believe how quiet it was. I liked it so much the following year on Black Friday they had a similar one that had a wall mount button but also had battery backup, so i grabbed one and replaced the Lift Master $85.00 and now the 2 doors open nice and quiet. So, both doors for $160.00 and they have worked flawlessly.

At my old house I replaced a noise chaindrive door opener with a Belt drive Genie. Was fantastic, my only issue (and one I hated, which is why I probably won't get another Genie) is that with the door open crossing the beam didn't turn the overhead light on. It makes the garage too dark when out with small children, a dog, or it getting late out while hanging outside. My new house has a genie, and same thing, this one's worse though, not only does crossing the beam do nothing, if you press the light button on the pad, it will not go back out. I found this out when I pressed the light to grab a beer one night, about 3 hours later I went to grab another and the light was still on. I'll probably be getting the direct drive chamberlain or liftmaster, unless the genie finally added the beam crossing light feature.

question, I have an older wooden 2 car oversize garage door, big enough that I can fit my conversion van in, i.e. taller than most....is this a good opener choice considering the weight of the door, do you think? there is currently little clearance with the currant overhead rail and I'm ready to replace. I've seen other reviews that say this is not a good choice for heavier doors.
@handydadtv Жыл бұрын
I’m no expert, but I didn’t think the weight of the door matters because the spring does most of the lifting.

The genie is the best wall mount operator for garage doors out there right now residential wise. It is not recommended to install them like you did on your specific setup of garage door. They should really be used in a high lift configuration not a standard track like you have at your house. Unless your door works absolutely flawlessly it will give you problems over time. It will throw the cables the door will get sideways and almost fall out of the tracks. We repair those every single day around here. Like I said they are great but they have a specific application that they are designed to be working with.
@handydadtv2 жыл бұрын
Is there any literature or studies to support this claim? Because all the brands say they work on normal height doors like mine.

I believe you said your door is quite heavy, went on manual mode? If so, it’s best to replace your springs. One because the springs might be old already or two they installed the wrong springs. You should be able to lift the door with one hand only. And also see from the video that the wires for the door for sure need replacement. The last thing you want is for them to snap and now you got yourself a leaning garage door with the bent corner. Just some tips 👍🏼

I installed this garage door opener about one year ago...and agree it's very quiet, frees ceiling space, and performs wonderfully. My ONLY complaint is with the two spring brackets that are installed on the lower rollers and attached to the cables of the doors. These spring brackets (which assure proper cable tension during closing) are buggy and often get jammed while the door is in the up position and keep the door from closing. Attempts at reshaping the arms and the use of spacers have yielded varied results but have not solved this issue. I can not trust the door to close properly and have to double-check it all the time. This aspect of this otherwise wonderful opener should be re-engineered for a better solution.
@handydadtv2 жыл бұрын
Interesting. You would think a simple spring would be a better solution than a cable sensor. Now I’m not so sure.
@jeffw80572 жыл бұрын
@@handydadtv In concept...I agree. But the reality is that garage doors...specifically the lower cable attachment bracket, and the spaces (tolerances) involved vary considerably by age, usage, installation, rail types, etc....and this challenges the spring design and shape, and its ability to perform. It's frustrating that a tiny and inexpensive component can render an otherwise wonderful opener inoperable.
@followerofgod79352 жыл бұрын
As a professional garage door installer, I have brought this up to Genie. Some brands of garage door tracks are not as tight where they meet as they should be. This allows for a small window where that cable tension spring can get caught right in-between. Once that happens it will jam up the garage door and cause problems. I will remove these entirely if the door is properly balanced and rolls perfect in my eyes. I am not telling you to take yours off, but you might want to have a professional look at it first. The engineers put a lot of work in developing this stuff to work right but they don't test every brand of door nor can they test every scenario.
@jeffw80572 жыл бұрын
@@followerofgod7935 Thanks. Good advice. Yes, I have talked with Genie a number of times over the phone and, although they were quite friendly, I didn't get a good solution.
