Michael Link you are right, it is a soap opera. But I think that’s what they are about. We are able to forget about our REAL lives, for a time, and live in these fantasy worlds. I think when we do this, we want the story to always be the “happily ever after”. At least we aren’t crazy by forgetting that it is ONLY a show. 😀

I didn't like Luke and Felicia. She was better with Mac and even Frisco. Laura matched better with Scotty and Kevin. Scotty didn't become a jerk until Laura ran off with Luke. Stefan was an interesting love interest. But he was too formal and gothic compared to wild and woolly Luke. I think by the time Kevin came along, she was ready to put down roots and settle down. I think they make a good match, when he's not busy being his evil twin Ryan. Ahhh, soaps. Crazy, but gotta love 'em!

I know it’s really upsetting how this has ended. GH really messed this relationship up, viewers didn’t want this to end in divorce. TG and GF may have wanted the script this way, but it’s just so final. I can’t get my head around them being with our people. I’ve watched GH from the late 70’s. AG and GF are the IT couple of soaps, nobody else compares. Chemistry off the chain in every screen they play. They bring out the best in each other. I dunno, I just don’t get it !!!

Genie Francis is so stunning in every scene, even when she played Diane on days. Luke is a fool to let her go, he never deserved her and still can't stop thinking about himself first, he deserves Felicia. One of my first memories is of watching days with my mom and seeing genie play Diana on days and thinking she looked like an angel. She always had something extra special that no other soap actress can match. You are amazing genie/laura...and I will always remember you as that angel on the television.

Im like many others here. I was 17 when the Luke & Laura story started. I loved the will they or won't they suspense of their story. Id never seen anything like it. For whatever reason, i cant remember why, i stopped watching the show somewhere after they settled down in PC with the kids. Id never seen these episodes and didnt know this happened! I sat here and bawled like a baby at this! Just like i'd never stopped watching 😢 I understand the reasons both TG & GF wanted to move to fresh storylines and challenges, just like real life sometimes. I think no one could come up with a way to do it that would please everyone, cast and fans. These two great actors devoted decades to their fans and castmates, i loved their story dearly and want to thank them all for allowing us to live a different life through them. ❤ Luke and Laura forever ❤

I know a lot of people didn’t like how this relationship deteriorated, especially in terms of Laura’s need for a home and stability, but I DO understand her perspective--It was easier for them to just take off and go on adventures when it was just the two of them, and/or even when Lucky was a small child. But with the birth of their daughter, and their son growing into a man, Laura had more to consider than just their love for the open road. She had a family to raise and protect; she realized that in order to do that, things had to change and she had to settle in one place, instead of moving from town to town and constantly being on the run. She matured a lot more than Luke did. And while Luke did love his family, he wasn’t incapable of being completely selfless; yes, he gave he did his best to love and protect his family, but a lot of times, he put his need to be free and experience danger and adventure ahead of the needs of his family. And his growing resentment towards having a home life over time was difficult to watch. Not to say it was all his fault-Laura shouldn’t have kept those secrets from him, either. But considering all he put her through over the years, I found it odd that he was so resentful, vindictive and unforgiving toward her for so long. I suppose all of that doesn’t make for interesting soap opera drama, though. But I liked this scene, even though I HATED them divorcing. Like many, I had always hoped they would eventually end up back together, but older and wiser. They couldn't be the carefree couple they were in the 80's, but they still could have been something else and still in love enough to make it work.

I really like what you said about the story of LnL. You summed it up very well. Luke was an adrenaline junkie. He lived for adventure and danger nipping at his heels. Ordinary life with a home, wife and kids made him squirm. I think he really did love his children, and Laura, of course. But his wanderlust was greater than his love for his family. Laura wanted stability, especially after she had Lucky and Lulu. She was done with the road and the pink Cadillac. She made her mistakes, for sure. But I think she became the "grown up" out of LnL. Luke was like Peter Pan; fun, magical, forever young. He just couldn't adjust to manhood.

Thank goodness we still have those videos of the beginning of Luke and Laura but if Tony Geary had his way they would be tossed as well. I can't stand how he trashed the roles that kept General Hospital from being cancelled and was the greatest soap couple of all times. How many of us that were young during the beginning remember how much we ran to the tv at 3 oclock to watch. I was obsessed with the show at that time and all due to Luke and Laura. I just hate what Tony Geary did to ruin it for the fans by using the writers to end it.

I agree. Geary became "above it all". I'd hoped he had more depth- but he turned out to be a somewhat shallow and self-absorbed man. Luke himself showed more character- at least he had inner conflict. Geary? Off to Amsterdam. I don't know if he ever "got it" - his view of soaps was cynical.

From what I have read, TG got very tired of the role and didn't want to be playing it indefinitely. Almost 40 years in the same character and little else must've felt a bit stifling, especially for an actor of his caliber, although GF shared that timeframe and is a high caliber actress in her own right. He was disturbed by the beginning of LnL's relationship (the rape) and didn't expect to become a leading man with such a controversial backstory. But he's in Amsterdam now, and happily retired, although I don't think he'll ever lose all interest in acting.

Oh My God,I too have been through it all with L&L,from the 70s disco and Laura married to Scotty(back when he was named Scotty,and not Scott) through when L&L ran away to "Beecher's Corners" as Lloyd and Lucy Johnson,and when David Gray kidnapped Laura off the dock on that foggy night,from when she came back numerous times off and on..and of course,their "Grand Wedding"this divorce hurts so much😭😭😭we all went through the same adventures with both of them..this really hurts,how the writers stupidly broke up the greatest Supercouple in Soap Opera History,and then to pair him up with Felicia of all people..what rotten chemistry those two had,shame on these "crummy" writers!#LUKEANDLAURAALWAYSAND FOREVER!

I've given up trying to figure out who made it that Luke and Laura could never reunite. I've never really heard Miss Francis bash Mr. Geary. I've never heard him bash her. I don't know what made it so, but I do know that it's sad the fans will never have that (including me!). Sometimes couples grow up and away from eachother. It doesn't mean that they no longer love each other as individuals, just that they are no longer in love. That is what I saw happen to Luke and Laura. I think that Tony Geary saw the same thing. They also still bond over their family. There is nothing wrong with that. When you look at a lot of soap opera couples, This takes the cake, When it comes to this couple "Luke and Laura." They're the american soap opera couple and they're an inspiration to all soap opera viewers. When you think of General Hospital, you think of the american couple because they wrote the book of true joyfully happiness through thick and thin. It was tough to see those two split apart because they were the heartthrobs of soap operas, but in the modern world that we lived in, All good things do come to an end, but lessons to be learn that if one door closes, another door opens. Everything happens for a reason and everything don't go according to your plan, It goes according to the man up above. So thank him for the open and close doors because you never ever know what life expects from you in store when you lease expect it ☺.

Yes, Genie did grow up. She was only 16 when Luke became obsessed with her. Most people here know the rest. But she showed from this scene that she'd become a "magnificent woman". She didn't need protecting anymore. Plus, TG had tremendous influence with the writers and storylines. He even ad-libbed frequently. He was tired of being recast, and wanted to move on to other things. So, he did. For a while. Typical Luke behavior.

General Hospital once every year should have a script in it called the GH Annual Steve Hardy Memorial Day. While Rachel Ames is still alive if she is able have her make a guest appearance as Audrey Hardy. Have Richard Dean Anderson as Jeff Webber make cameo guest appearances.

I pushed the "like" button but really I didn't enjoy watching this at all; damn that divorce! It's all BS. Both of them meant "to death do us part" and Luke also meant what he said that he'd never let her go again when he saw her back from the Cassadine's island upon her return in the mayor's mansion backyard. Honestly GH writers did a major disservice to both their fans and marriage. Such a shame.

Truly the end of an era. But this clip makes it clear that L & L have different priorities now. Luke has permanent wanderlust, which made for great entertainment and sky-high ratings. But Laura is a mother now, a grown woman, who wants safety and stability for her children, her husband and herself. Laura grew up, Luke didn't. p.s. I love TG, BTW!

This is the first time I've seen this. I had no idea they divorced. This sucks. But soaps aren't about fantasies coming true, they are about actors stretching in chaotic situations. Expect brutal reality or entertaining fantastic stories. Of course, the greatest fantasy of all is everlasting love...maybe they could have written that for these two... nothing says they couldn't have exciting plots at the same time. So sad.

I agree! I LOVED Robert and Holly! L&L became the iconic soap couple, but I still thought r&h were so passionate, as well as tender. The chemistry was so strong, they became lovers after the cameras stopped rolling.

The ending of Tony Geary as Luke Spencer was so lame! He says good bye to Sonny and Laura, at least in person. The envelope says "Angel" on it, but I've never seen or heard if there was anything in it. TG was determined not to have LnL ride off into the sunset together.

The scene was so poignant and beautifully played. But when the phone rang and Laura guessed correctly it was Felicia, that was the final straw. Luke just couldn't settle down. And Laura was looking backwards for contentment with Scott. The dream of L&L was over.

The problem wasn't them divorcing Luke and Laura, the issue was the change in writing regimes during 2002 when they were reuniting the pair. For some reason the new team didn't want GF on the show and wrote her out.

Yesterday I left a comment here where I was a little bit critical of TG and actually I wanted to leave it by that. But after I read the answer to my comment and some others here which for me are just a little bit self-righteous and moralistic (and also one-sided; but I will not go into that) I‘m once again commenting one more time. He once said in an interview that people either take soaps not seriously at all or take them too seriously. Many comments here just show disappointment that he didn‘t maintain the illusion of a never ending love story. I can understand this feeling very well, I wouldn‘t have watched the whole L&L story here on youtube if I were immune to this sort of romanticism. I, too, would have preferred a „happy ending“. But attacking the actor for his (perhaps sometimes wrong) decisions is going too far. I agree, he identified himself too much with the character of Luke, which obscured sometimes his artistic judgment (romance is not the same as kitsch). But there‘s nothing wrong with being ambitious and uncompromising and not seeing an actor‘s priority in ingratiating himself with the audience. Maybe he shouldn‘t have vented his bitterness sometimes so explicitly (which I can understand - to get always reduced to L&L must have been frustrating), maybe some of his actions or remarks were insensitive for loyal watchers, but nevertheless, what about a little bit generosity or, well, empathy? He always saw himself as an outsider, so his undiplomatic and sometimes provocative behaviour isn‘t much of a mystery. I personally like his unconventional and sometimes eccentric manner. The L&L story also lived from these special qualities and made it so unique. I, at any rate, hope he hasn‘t too many regrets and that he's doing well.

Doubly sad. To think that people set the compass of their lives and marriages on the example of soap opera couples. Many real-life couples break up because of reasons they see on the TV which were written by screenwriters in order to help actors get out of troublesome contracts. Luke and Laura were examples of what can go right - there was no reason for a divorce. But the actors desperately needed one so they could live real and full lives. Our loss. Their gain.

I actually stopped watching soon after they got married and assumed all these years that they were living happily ever after. A romance that huge, that celebrated... I just assumed they would always be together. Naive I guess. It IS a soap opera. 😢

This was such good writing though. And they are just so good together. Port 'Chuck' doesn't feel the same without Luke in it. It's true when he says to Laura, 'most people don't come near what (they) had.' It was nice the writers gave them this time/scene to reminisce and connect before they parted though. I don't feel like writers now take this time with their couples. Scenes now are SO short..
