This is the future of urban mobility. This is the answer to all of our problems. This is The Drycycle. This EAPC (Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle) is, as far as legislation is concerned, a bicycle - and may just be the solution to the issues caused in urban environments by heavy, polluting cars. In this video, Si challenges Hank to the ultimate city cycling challenge to see if the Drycycle really is the future.

Sometimes, could be great option to introduce these in a bike share situation, and have the city centre made car free (replacing the electric smart share option there is now) They do potentially clog up the bike lanes, as the motorversions do. Question: does Conor fit it them?

Pretty cool actually, I can see this becoming a thing in the future when prices drop. I think for ~5k (some) people would buy it. However, I think adding a second seat would make this way more interesting for most people. If it becomes more popular, probably it's going to be treated like a small car, though.

I hope if they do, they make it more like a motorcycle license. I shouldn't have to be able to drive a car to be able to ride a bike that happens to look like a car and have 4 wheels. This wouldn't be an issue if they would just make bike lanes everywhere but at least in my city, people complain about the few lanes we get

I’ve often thought some sort of covered recumbent could in some world be a nice option, and now with the electric assist they seem to be able to overcome some of the difficulties with recumbents. Still, as noted it isn’t really a car replacement and so at that price it still seems at best a niche product for people whose lifestyle happens to be a perfect fit or who just have money to throw around. Still, it’s pretty cool

My in laws live in a gated community in SC. It is also a huge golf course, so their back yard butts up against a beak of pine trees, that line part of the golf course. Evey house has a 2 car garage and a smaller door on the garage, for a golf cart. Besides using these electric golf carts for golf, they use them for getting around the neighborhood and even doing local shopping. There is a large grocery store and a few restaurants that are also accessible by cart.

I believe that this product has big potential in the future. This is perfect for people who need to travel in a city, be severely cost-effective than a car, and possible easy storage. The major issues are glaring however like you can't go on sidewalks, the pedal assist is not fast enough to share the road with other vehicles, and parking & securing this product will be difficult. I want this innovation to take off!

It may be called a Drycycle. It may have a bubble roof. But based on what I am seeing in this video at 3:20, it will not keep you dry in the rain. When the host brings the top down, it doesn't seal against the body. In fact, I can see a 2" gap between the top and the cowl, meaning that if it rains, you're getting wet. Other than that, it looks pretty cool. I wouldn't have one; terribly impractical for where I live. Extremely pricey. But pretty cool.

It's unfortunately too expensive - like vehicles like the Twike. They are built in small numbers without much automation by hand with high labor costs in Europe or the UK, what makes them that expensive. They would need to use automation in production or build it in countries with lower labor costs to get them affordable.

This was fun to watch, and I am intrigued by yet another recent idea to downsize cars or upsize bikes. If I lived near an actual city, it might be an interesting way to get around. On the other hand, are there still people out there that actually believe that our carbon emissions are affecting the planet’s climate in any significant way other than causing a considerable increase in vegetative cover worldwide? I guess that still sells things to people who want to feel good about themselves, and blowing 15 Grand for a gadget ought to fulfill that need very well.

Why all these solutions have to cost so much money that they can NEVER become mainstream? A simple non-electric tricycle with a cheap soft water-resisting cloth or nylon on top and a plastic bottom, regular wheels with spokes etc. could cost a little more than a conventional bike. No battery needed, no steering magic, no differential transmission, if the single wheel is on the back. No warming device as well - it's a bike and you're supposed to pedal to keep warm. And also, if you remove and fold the soft top, you get a complete outdoors experience, just like ... a bike. Why all designs for a "covered" bike need to always look like a spaceship and have a price that equals to 3 old cars? Is that some petrol lobby or what?

I live in an urban environment. Lots of people use either electric scooters or electrically assisted bicycles. They are easy to get into lifts in apartment building and people keep then inside their apartments. This contraption is very limited in its storage options. It cannot be owned by most apartment dwellers and probably only usable by suburbanites who have a lock-up garage and those people likely already own and drive a car. It is apartment dwellers who most need a bicycle for their normal transportation and this is not that. While it is nice to be dry in the rain, but when the sun comes out, the advantage of an ordinary electrically assisted bicycle is that is open to the air. I can't imagine anything worse than being enclosed in a box on a summery day. It might be okay in the UK but it seems to be a terrible idea for somewhere like Australia.

There is one car that is as small as that EAPC - Peel P50. Drive that car around town, and you have to pay UK congestion charges.

What I noticed right away was the vehicle stuck behind you; reminding me why most people drive. Enclosed or not, manually powered vehicles are obnoxiously slow and impede everyone unfortunate enough to be stuck behind them.

Yep and in Europe they have stupid too low limits on ebikes and similar vehicles too. Makes it even worse. I'd take an electric car over this thing for sure. Rip off at 15k imo.

You could get a really nice classic car for £13,000.00 and the best part is that classic cars can be easier to work on and also if they are over 40 years old you don't have to do an MOT or pay road tax. Also, they can be smaller than most modern cars.

I think I'd have to take my Bazooka with me next time I go out just in case I get stuck behind one of these. 😆

Perfect! Someone has invented something that can clog both the road and the bike lane. On top of that, you can definitely make a lot of friends by riding that with your indicator flashing all the time.

If they want it to catch-on in the States, they'll need to add easy drive-through fast food ports, which can double as gunner ports.

I haven't looked at the details lately but I was under the impression that in most states of the USA the laws for "bicycle" or ebike require you to have 2 or 3 wheels. So they might tell you that it fails to comply with laws for road legal car, bicycle, or motorcycle. Over the years there have been quite a few similar bikes/velomobiles made with three wheels which might have a better chance of being fully street legal.
