In this video I show you a receptacle that may be the highest quality DIY receptacle out there. It has been out for over a decade and nobody has talked about them even though they are just as easy and safe to install as the new Leviton Decora Edge receptacle that everyone is raving about. These Leviton Lev-Lok receptacles are truly high quality.

I wired a 14 story building with those receptacles about 10 years ago. I was told the logic behind it was not needing an electrician to replace them.

Suggestion: Wago lever connectors are more effective when the wires are straight. These receptacles are mostly designed for use in a commercial environment where it may not be possible to de-energize a circuit to replace a receptacle. This system allows a receptacle to be safely replaced on a live circuit, in the same way that ballast connectors do. Think of a retail environment, where multiple cash registers are on the same circuit, and you need to service a receptacle. You cannot shut down all the registers, so these twist locks allow one to be replaced safely with the circuit energized. This is why they are offered in commercial grade only because that is their target application. Of course, a Wago 221-413 pigtailed into the outlet to feed the receptacle will accomplish the same thing for 1/4 the cost. Lift a lever, remove pigtailed receptacle, replace receptacle, insert pigtail back into Wago , close lever, and you’re done, all without disturbing the live circuit.

Except standard receptacles have exposed terminals. These do not. It’s possible to pull the receptacle out of the box without ever being exposed to line voltage. If they’d caught on, the prices would now be similar.

As Elon says, the best part is no part. Decora Edge has fewer parts and because of this is faster to install, has fewer points of failure and is therefore better. I just redid my whole house in Decora Edge and love them! I installed them in 10 minutes vs 20 with old hook or insert style. Another benefit, the ends of my wires will no longer receive damage when replacing a plug with both solutions and need cut off. This Lev Lock solution is better for plugs that need replaced frequently like in hospitals or businesses as eliminates bending of the wires stuffing in the box. Interesting video, I learned something new today!

Pretty cool. I prefer the look of the decoras but also because they're easier to clean and they use the same face plate as the light switches. The reason that's important to me is because I use some custom stained wood and color coded plastic face plates and it's easier to just have them all the same and keep spares if more are being added or something needs to be replaced. You don't need to keep an stash of light switch face plates and receptacle face plates. They're all the same face plate.

I've never heard of these, but I really like the idea and they are available by order at Home Depot. Unfortunately, at approximately $12 each, they are about $10 more than a traditional commercial grade and that makes them hard to justify, especially when there's really no functional advantage over a properly installed regular receptacle. I could see using a couple of these to try out. BTW, the advantage is pretty much erased on an end of the run receptacle or when all the screws are used for middle of the run because you're adding a wire nut or Wago, when none would be needed otherwise.

Interesting. I would like them if they came in the more modern look format. Another nicety is that one can effectively complete the pre-wiring and just snap the outlet and plate on later by putting the pigtails in and then doing sheetrock mud (by leaving the paper tab on, doesn't damage or mess up any wiring).

Thanks for the video. Well done, as usual. Two questions: I have a home built in 1963. All of the original switch/outlet boxes are metal. As I have been replacing older outlets, I have found myself having to also replace the box with a plastic one. Is this code today to replace them with plastic? I have found that the old metal ones not only pose a danger but are all too small to handle the typical size of the newer outlets, specifically GFCI and Lev-Lok. Next question, do you find that using Lev-Lok are worth using even given the price over a basic one?

I'm skeptical about the Wago snap-on splices. They worry me just like the old outlets where you push the wires in to a spring-contact. You get much more wire-to-wire contact with a properly sized and installed wire nut, resulting in much lower contact resistance and better long-term reliability. For a circuit regularly delivering more than 1000 Watts, such as a bathroom with a hair dryer, over time the Wago could become a serious problem.

I was thinking of installing some dual outlets in my office and garage. Two plugs are good for normal items but I sometimes need additional outlets in my office and garage. Do you have a video on using these Decora Edge Receptacles and how you would wire them with two 2 receptacles in each wall plate and if it can work with these Decora Edge Receptacles ?
@glasshalffull2930
@glasshalffull2930 10 ай бұрын
Very simple job and it is almost identical to what he did. Your receptacle is either an end run, where it would look just like his and have only ONE wire of each color in the box. Or it would be in the middle of a circuit and would have TWO wires of each color in the box. Here, he used a ‘two slot’ Wago connector to attach to the device plug. Since you want two receptacles, You just need to use THREE five slot Wagos. These are called Wago 221-415 and have slots for five wires. Just like in the video, all the black wires in the box go into one Wago and you connect your new TWO black wires (one from each receptacle) to this same Wago. Connect all white wires in the same way to their own Wago. Connect all the green wires to their own Wago.

I think what might make it unappealing is that it requires proprietary hardware and considering most people splice wires with wirenuts, and not wago lever nuts, swapping in and out for different outlets outside the series might be a pain in the ass.

They are a great idea and very quick timesaver, BUT when you have a wall box filled with wires, that extra required adapter is hard to stuff inside a box already filled with wire nuts and/or 12 guage wires. AND the price is just crazy nuts ! When you have a 50 outlet job to do, that makes competitive pricing a big deal ! Just my quick observation that my wallet is screaming NO !

They're interesting, but I'd still rather use a Leviton commercial unit with the clamp plates. The Lev-Lock basically forces a pigtail, and with code saying the Romex should have 6" from the back of the box, this looks like 4" or more inches of additional wire. Box fill could be an issue. Leviton doesn't appear to make a commercial grade Decora style switch (at least not that I've been able to find in the big box stores), and the residential grade switches are really junky. So all my paddle light switches are residential grade and the receptacles are all commercial grade, and that bothers me.

In commercial settings, they will often install the receptacle with the ground slot/hole up in case a piece of metal falls between the plug and the receptacle, it won't bridge the hot and neutral prongs on the plug. That's probably why the lettering is in that orientation.
