6 жыл бұрын

Since its development in 1997, Auto-Tune has made its way into almost every genre of music. While the talkbox and vocoder give songs a retro feel, Auto-Tune was originally used on futuristic pop hits. In 1998, Cher’s “Believe” was one of the first commercial recordings to use the effect. In 1999 Jennifer Lopez released her No. 1 hit “If You Had My Love.” Inspired by J. Lo, T-Pain took Auto-Tune to the next level.
On his 2005 debut, T-Pain used it to distort his vocals, rather than just pitch-correct them. In 2007, Snoop Dogg embraced the effect on “Sexual Eruption.” In 2008, Lil Wayne adopted the technique for 'Tha Carter III.' Later that year, Kanye dropped his Auto-Tuned '808s & Heartbreak.' But then in 2009, JAY-Z announced his desire to kill the effect with “D.O.A. (Death Of Auto-Tune).” Since then, there have been protests… but the effect has persevered.

hannibal_007 yeah I didn’t like 808s & Heartbreak and Yeezus until recently. I still don’t like Heartless as much as anything else but the other songs are really good. Yeezus on the other hand is fucking great. I honestly got the album just because it was kanye and I wanted to get all 7 albums, but I never cared to listen. One day I was just playing through them and when I listened to all of New Slaves and got smacked in the face with that god tier outro, I realized the art of the album and fell in love with it. Guilt Trip is my personal favorite though

People think Auto-Tune makes the singer, when it doesn't. To use autotune, you have to already have prior knowledge of what notes to hit and what key to sing it in. Sure, you can make noise into autotune, but autotune won't automatically just make it sound magical, especially if you're not singing the correct notes. Autotune was made to help you hit notes perfectly, not the correct note. So, for instance, if you hit a flat note, and a flat note is within that key range, autotune is gonna help you hit that flat note perfectly. This is coming from someone who has used autotune for over 8 years. So if you hate autotune, because you think it helps people sing that don't know how, that is completely false.
@LLTMANSA
@LLTMANSA 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Ive been trying to tell people that. You still have to have some sense of pitch knowledge when using auto tune!

Cereal Chaser nope... this is Melodyne!! Melodyne makes magic, autotune NO.
@OMGItsGuppey
@OMGItsGuppey 6 жыл бұрын
Cereal Chaser, there are ways to manually correct someone's pitch, but that is not autotune. Autotune is bascially the computer doing it for you, which does not know exactly what note you are trying to hit, but it rather guesses and assumes by helping you hit whatever note you're trying to hit, regardless if it's an incorrect note or not. Like ESSJ021 said, that's not autotune, that's Melodyne, flex pitch, or whatever manual pitch correction is called in your DAW.

no one thinks that and i still hate auto tune to an extent, tpain did it well, now its just over done
@OMGItsGuppey
@OMGItsGuppey 6 жыл бұрын
Spencer, People do think that, I've heard it plenty of times personally. People have complained about me using auto-tune in my songs simply because they believe it "makes the singer be able to sing when they really cant." I don't see how you could like the way T-Pain used auto-tune, when he basically over did it, using the effect at full settings to sound almost identical to a robot, but you hate when other's do it because somehow, some way, they over did it way more than T-Pain did. Makes sense.

Bodhicitta i just can't get into it if it's used correctly and with a bit of class then yeh but if it's just an overload of autotune in every song then it's too much like i cba with travis scott or future etc

T-Pain is the one who brought it to us where we knew it was autotuned, but he made it sound so good, and we didnt mind.

Daft Punk Had Their Talkbox and Vocoded Vocals Since Their Song "Around the World" and Their Second Album "Discovery".. But Did You Know That Romanthony Only Used Autotune in Daft Punk's One More Time? In Fact: Romanthony Actually Did Some Tracks for Daft Punk, Especially for Thomas Bangalter's Label. Three Of Daft Punk's Songs Featured Romanthony: Too Long, One More Time and a Version of it from Their Daft Club Album. Hold On was The Only Romanthony Song to be Distributed by and Released on Roule, Despite The Fact That it Was First Released on Another Label Before Roule.

Love the Talk Box.. not crazy about the way autotune is used in mainstream music but at the same time pitch correction plug-ins are just like any other tool in an engineer's arsenal like EQ and compression. It's all done to taste..

Sorry I'm late to the party (should've commented the moment this video was uploaded) If T-Pain is the king of auto tune, then Kesha (Ke$ha, if you will) is the queen. I feel like she could've just at least gotten an honorable mention here, even if she doesn't really use it anymore, but still, great video!
