Nice little documentation. Autotune is one of my favourite plugins ever, because I love the sweet little randomness in the way the pitch slides from one note to another, and I love the clean vocal sound that this yields, because if you run that through a reverb it is just angelic. I don't care if people use Autotune to compensate for bad vocal skills or as a stylistic choice, the plugin just has multiple usecaes and it is used for these usecases. Simple as that. People who pretend like they are mad about Autotune's capabilities are just mad about themselves, because they can't accept that their way of approaching a problem is not the only way to solve it. Antares is one my least favourite plugin developers though. They spam you with emails if you are in their subscriber list and these emails tell you to quickly buy Autotune before it gets more expensive, and I just think like "DUDE, I AM WATING FOR YEARS NOW FOR YOU TO MAKE IT CHEAPER!! NOT. MORE. EXPENSIVE!!" I mean, sure it's famous, so it can be a bit more expensive than most other plugins. But they are just milking the fame way too hard. I'd even argue that most beatmakers and rappers don't even own a legit copy of the plugin because of that and I think that sucks, because that means that you are not rewarded for acting righteously as a non-professional audio engineer.

I think the best vocal performances are still those that are untouched pitch-wise. Part of a voice's character is it's imperfections.

It's funny because in my state at Malaysia still think that all of our local artist didn't even use autotune on their vocals. Hahaha! But autotune is one of my top plugins on the go for mixing singing vocal and melodic rap vocal.

Back in 2002 my band went into a local studio to record our second studio album. We loved being able to use auto-tune as we were still young and hadn't fully developed our voices yet. I'm not sure what we used though because we certainly weren't using a DAW... we were using a mixing console and ADAT machines. I actually went through that producers hard drives from back in the day looking for my friend's bands stuff from 2004 or something. Didn't find it but apparently he still has the ADAT tapes but no way to play them back. Antares seems familiar, maybe it was that! The album was 'The last sane man on earth' by 21st Century Ox (available everywhere). We definitely copped a lot of flak from using it... personally I use bx_crispytuner from plugin alliance in the present day.

@@afunnylookingsquash oh yes hardware was available first computers where not powerful enough to use such a tool.. the singer Cher was among the first to have released music using it. it was used as a insert on your mixing console they even made a preamped version. first software version was protools TDM when digi design actually made processors to install just to run plug-ins

The first time I noticed autotune being used in a stylistic way was the track This is My Life (Brisk Mix) by Stealth. Which was released in 2000. But since it’s of the happy hardcore techno genre nobody talks about it.

There is a certain artifact that I keep hearing in vocals that have been pitch-corrected, it is some sort of subtle harmonic distortion that gets introduced into the vocals, especially when notes are held longer than the original or when the pitch correcting is applied pretty hard where the original note is changed to a completely different note or when the vocals are spoken or sung in monotone to have the melody added "in post." It absolutely drives me nuts. Almost nobody else I have ever tried to point this out to thinks I am crazy and hearing something that is not there. If I am not hearing it, what am I hearing? If I am hearing it and can pinpoint exactly where I am hearing it, it's got to be there. I even heard it in your demo with the last couple of notes. BTW, Molodyne is definitely the way to go when you are using it in a non-real-time situation which is how I work. I'm now seeing a basic version of Melodyne being included in more and more DAWs. I absolutely love the software. I often use it to create harmonies from a single vocal. It's pretty cool how many different ways you can use it.

Yes, of course pitch correction is just another tool in the toolbox. As Björk said about using computers in music: ”If there is no soul in your music, it’s because no one put it there. You can’t blame the tool”. If we are to condemn every tool that is abused, we will have none left. The problem with contemporary pop is a reflection of problems with the music industry, not the recording studio. It will self-correct in time, like pop music always do. However, we do have a ”loudness war”-like hostage situation with pitch correction that people need to be aware of: In order to not stand out in a way perceived to be bad, artists and producers may feel forced to pitch (and time) correct to a degree they would rather avoid. Meaning the problem is self-perpetuating. I’m confident though that this too will pass in time. We just don't now how or when.

@ghost mall the song sounded great indeed. But it was his word the he don't have any vocal talent and the good result is from relying on the tool. . I'm not criticize him. Just summing up his research into the topic.

2:34 No, Auto-Tune did NOT entirely eliminate the need for comping vocals. Auto-Tune can fix pitch, but it can’t fix diction, timbre or “color”, or lots of other vocal techniques that require the producer to sift through multiple takes to find the best in ALL regards. Very misleading statement.
@afunnylookingsquash

maybe misworded in the video, but what I meant was that now there is a tool that can save you time by possibly fixing a portion of the vocal without having to do as many takes

Ur song sounded like a blink 182 gone indie morphed with death cab.. u were going for death cab huh !?! cool stuff lol Yeah, the prob with autotune ISN'T autotune, it's just so many people crutched their way into a place in music where they would have zero place. In my studio,, omg,, smh with local artists it was bad. sitting here for hours listening to them practice caz they wont at home caz it's more cool to come into the studio and 'yeah, im so cool caz I can one take it ! ' but they really can't one take it, so we sit here for almost an hour while they play with autotune and I left the session to have a cigarette a half an hour ago. They didn't even notice I left the console !! happens all the time... pull my hair out. Finally around 2014, I just announced ' I don't have autotune ' . no more. It broke. got lit on fire. the software burnt. The bits must have crumbled somehow. Bit rot. yeah it's a thing. totally happened, the bit rot. The computer musta got bored.... my cpu was pulling its ram out. hehe

Thank you for destroying music forever. Auto tune can be wonderful IF you rely on your talent for good vocals then just use it as a polisher final touch. Then yes auto tune is awesome where you use like 10 to 15% of it and only in certain sections. But when you’re relying ONLY on auto tune for “in key” vocals, that is a recipe for disaster
