Fun fact: There was no autotune used in blue. The effect was done by a vocoder and a harmonizer. They wanted to use the same effect as cher, but they didn't know what it was so they tried the next best thing.

Autotune is definitely still around, as a tool. You hear it everywhere. They just happen not to use the intentionally crazy settings for the effect. And as for T-pain being the one who ruined things, it's really Kanye's 808s and Heartbreak that made that genre a fully realized thing. Also why isn't there an old picture of the NYC street grid? For sure, and it's hardly imperceptible on many tracks. It's particularly terrible on musical sitcoms. I like the way musicians have overtly used autotune in their songs. However, where it's used to excess the music falls flat. For example, Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah is great with his characteristic imperfect voice (even if I think one of the covers is better). An autotuned version would be a travesty, which is the way I feel about many a modern song.

They were all done live in one take as well, usually. I mean something like Visions of Johanna is just amazing, flaws and all. They add to it. But regardless, I am a musician. I think when certain musicians obsess over exact performances, they often lose out on creativity. For another example, when someone does this really intricate solo, perfectly duplicating the song they're performing, all I can think is "Cool. Now lets hear you write some songs" Even classical musicians (I'm talking about the 1700s-early 1900s) would add "imperfections" to make things more interesting. I mean go listen to Debussy playing his own music, with piano rolls. It's quite different than those playing his sheet music and try to "perfect" it. Having everything as quarter notes would be boring as hell. And that's my point.

Autotune seems like it's a tool that's best used selectively, or in places where it fits the overall motif of the work/genre. It worked in Cher's song because it was used sparingly, more as an effect than anything else, to draw attention to the key line of the song. In Blue by Eifel 65 & One more time by Daft Punk, it's fine for it to be such a consistent presence because they were different versions of house music, a genre that itself a form of electro music. In those kinds of scenarios, auto tune fits because it can be used to emphasize the core attributes of the genre. T-pain's schtick was a gimmick, and I feel like we all knew that, even if we didn't want to admit it at the time. The issue with autotune is just a case of too much salt spoils the stew. It's like how bacon became a thing in the early 2010's. Yea, bacon is fine, and even good in some places. But if you have it with every dish at every meal, it's going to wind up having some unintended consequences.

I've done some audio engineering and I can tell you autotune will not instantly make someone sound great who doesn't have the fundamentals down. Depending on how heavy-handed you use it, it can range from a subtle improvement to an aggressively digital edited sound.

Funny you mention this... I'm a sound engineer for music and video and I've actually used Melodyne (auto tune's main competitor) to do just that. A lot of times interviews sound like this, and editing the pitch down at the end of a sentence helps a ton.

If I have a lot of time to record, I’ll try my best to get a great take on my own. However if I’m limited on time, I have no shame in using slight pitch correction to fix a take that was almost there. While I do prefer the sound of a naturally sang performance, the value of pitch correction software in the age of home recording cannot be understated.

For example Bruno Mars is insanely talented and can hit every pitch perfectly, but he uses Autotune on more mild back tasteful setting to subtly give it's modern pop flair in his production. I really enjoy Cheddar's content, but there's a lack of quality control in some of these videos. It's crazy to me that no one had the presenter go back and fix all the blatant pronunciation errors. As far as I know, and I think the band members themselves talked about it in some video on KZbin, "Blue" by Eiffel 65 doesn't use autotune but rather a harmonizer. It's a similar thing but rather than automatically tuning the voice it harmonizes it with a second signal, like a vocoder on steroids, in this case I think the second signal was the digital piano used throughout the song.

Autotune is just a tool, it's as good as the person using it. Like the worlds best sculptor probably isn't going to be a paraplegic with a hammer and chisel, but that not because the tools aren't capable.

a tool that works way better on high pitched voices apply it to a deep voice and it does more harm than good. there's a shit ton ofl ow male voices that are imperfect, and people prefer it over the autotuned any day, missing the mark on a high pitch is just that much more a gamebreaker.

Just a note, in the 18th century, here in Brazil, we had Antonio Lisboa, aka Aleijadinho (lil’ cripple). He sculpted several masterpieces, still present in the churches of Ouro Preto. @@tomhannon8066 depends on how you define "better". A sculpture modeled in ZBrush by a talented 3D artist and printed on a high resolution resin 3D printer will have amazing level of detail. But it will lack the tool marks of a traditional sculptor and the human touch in general. If that's what you mean, that "honest" look of a piece made by hand, then yes, a human sculptor is better

Except for Cher, every "artist" in this video is a hack. I get using it in the studio to smooth out the rough edges for albums, but a lot of people that use it have no singing talent and are essentially famous for their image. I can't listen to any music today that has obvious autotuning in it, which is most music today. In the words of a true musical talent, Bob Seger, "I like that old time rock 'n' roll."

Great informative video! However sometimes you showed the Mic Mod EFX plugin (used for saturating the voice and making it sound deeper and richer) instead of the actual autotune plugin. By the way: Autotune is not the only way to manipulate the pitch of a singers voice. You can also use melodyne, with which goes much deeper and you can change every single aspect of the sung notes. The only difference between those two is tgat melodyne is manual pitch correction, and autotune automatic pitch correction👌

New tech comes in to music all the time. Some of these trends explode, but usually die down after a decade: There was an annoying amount of Moog Synthesizer in the 60s and 70s but it's nonexistent now.

I actually like the sound of autotune when used as an instrument to add more style to the song, and when it's done properly; for exampel that Cheer song. But using it to repair bad singing does not work. It's not the fault of the autotune, but the bad singing. "Autotune" is also not a good term when you don't use it to tune it automatically.
