Remember this is recorded with a microphone so she could sing softly but on real stage there is no microphone for operas (like its European counterpart). Think about how she has to project all that volume while maintaining control.

One of the reasons Chinese Opera is as "ear-splitting" as it is. It just how it be with most singers being more used to actual stage performances like that. It's very much like olden European opera (y'know the stereotype shown in cartoons) but with it's own culture brought into it.

i used to really dislike chinese opera because it was "what grandmas would listen to" but eventually as grew older and stuff i started to appreciate chinese culture and be proud of who i am, which is one of the biggest achievements of my life so far! ever since i was young, ive been ashamed of my ethnicity because i'd see the 2014 tumblr girls on my computer and wanted to be white so bad LMFAO edit: IM SO GLAD THAT IM NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO FEELS THIS WAY!!!

Hongniang (红娘) is the name of a servant who served the Cui family (崔家). The story had been written in many versions but the one I learnt was 《莺莺传》(The Story of Yingying), basically it's a love story between YingYing and Zhangsheng (张生). At 0:49 this scene is where Yingying asked Hongniang to secretly call over Zhangsheng to her room, where their romance officially begins.

This is Peking opera, which is categorized at more enjoyable to everyone. And theres kunqu opera, which is categorized as more towards more "sophisticated" or scholarly audience. Don't know how to translate 雅俗properly, but don't be offended...
