I show how it's easy to take macro photos hand-held in the woodland using an on-camera flash. I ditch my tripod and use my Canon 600 EX-RT speedlite on my Canon R5, diffused with a collapsible Westcott diffuser and hunt for beautiful mushrooms and insects in the Autumnal undergrowth.
I explain how I balance my camera settings with my flash settings and how I help keep leaves still in strong winds. I also find a surprise shot deep in the forest.

After focus stacking do you keep the individual files or just the end stacked one? love your vidoes they teach me alot and give inspiration and ideas.

I am just thinking about starting in macro. Would using an LED light solve flash problems for focus stacking? And whould the LED light not be helpful in revealing more of what the actual finished photo would look like?

What shutter speed? Does flash let you use 1/200 with no blur?

Great little bug shots, especially the first shield bug, but why such a high iso of 500 when you have the flexibility and the shallow DoF, I would have thought a low iso as possible, to get more detail, your flash gives you the light and freezes any movement and the open wide aperture allows the light in. Interested in your reasoning. DG

Hi David, a good question and thanks for watching. Essentially, I wanted to ease the strain on my flash by upping the ISO sensitivity. By using ISO 500 instead of 100 I was able to keep shooting with my flash at about 1/8th power which meant it could fire more quickly without having to wait between shots to recharge. Had I have increased the flash power to 1/2 or even full power then it would quickly have needed several seconds between between shots to get ready to fire and that would have lost me shots. With modern cameras -- especially full frame models like the R5 -- upping the ISO to even 500 makes almost no difference to image noise so I felt it was a good trade off to make here. Hope that helps!

Snails or slug eggs. We moved a log at the back of our shed and there were huge slugs on it and loads of eggs. Our friend Google showed images of eggs that were of either snail or slugs

Hi Andrew. For your photo of the mushroom is there any reason why you chose to do a manual focus stack rather than using the R5's focus bracketing? Not a criticism - I'm just curious. I've not had an opportunity to use a camera with focus bracketing yet so wasn't sure if it is usable 'in the field'. Thanks for more great content (and also thanks for your great lightroom videos - I've learnt a lot from them)

Not sure if it's like where I live but the autumn seems to not be happening because the leaves are so dehydrated. I can see me doing a lot more close-up shots as the woodlands don't look so pretty this year.
