"I was in Paris once. Dressed extremely well I thought. With silk and ribbons and ringlettes in my hair. Very gay, very ladylike. And even then someone mistook me for a Mmmm. So no, I am not a man, I am a lady, a woman, a lady woman, I am a woman.". - Anne Lis-tah I bloody love her!

I think gay is used in old fashion meaning of this term: brightly colored. The word gay arrived in English during the 12th century from Old French gai, most likely deriving ultimately from a Germanic source. In English, the word's primary meaning was "joyful", "carefree", "bright and showy", and the word was very commonly used with this meaning in speech and literature. That's why she say I'm lady, lady women, women. If thay term have any connotation with homosexuality in that time that will be also connotation with prostitiute and brothels mainly with man prostitiute. Women homosexuality was not yet been recognized.

@Clarice Starling No she's not "trans", if a woman hated being a woman back then it was because of the acceptable sexism in society and women didn't have same rights and freedom as men, what she wanted was same rights and freedom as men
@i.cs.z4 жыл бұрын
@Clarice Starling as a trans guy, I really don't think she was trans. There are some historical figures where people debate that they were trans or gnc and I think they ate the former, but Lister isn't one of them. It's actually quite common for gnc cis people to be uncomfortable with terms like "lady", "wonan", "man", because of the asociated traits, even if they otherwise identify with them.

@WO1 Tracey Gerald I am a gay woman. And I hate my breast being touched and I feel completely comfortable in the woman's body (but It was not like that for really long time, frankly speaking. I thought that I need (must, more... correct word, I assume) to be a man to be able to love women). So... the only way to now what Anne felt exactly is... to ask her¿ But we could never do it... now. We can also understand her journals not in 'correct' way as well. Don't you think so? But yeah. In some way I understand what are you talking 'bout, so... it's kind of difficult question

Ludovica Stile it baffles me still how she could have contemplated bringing her back to Shibden with her when she was clearly embarrassed by her. She spoke as if disgusted to be seen with her. Such a complete contrast to Ann. She didn’t deserve that verbal put down. So glad she didn’t bite the rest of that bullet. Geez 😬
@ludovicastile38715 жыл бұрын
@@PtoRicanDBLT yeah it's true. But you know, sometimes we don't always realize we need better for ourselves. What I find inspiring about Ann is that she doesn't compromise. That's the lesson I'm trying to learn. Everybody deserves to be happy, despite sour judgements and painful words. 💟

It’s so very painful to be alive in this world sometimes; it takes great courage to survive it. All the best do! Some of the greatest ppl, have endured unimaginable suffering, loss and death; and yet, they are also the greatest teachers, writers, philosophers and spiritual leaders the world has ever known. It’s thru suffering that we find our strength and resilience. Life will beat you down if you let it; it’s suppose to. It takes great courage to rise from the ashes and make something beautiful.

These scenes certainly are relatable to me, and I’m not even a lesbian. I too have a masculine side when it comes to how I dress, but I also have that feminine side too. I’ve also been mistaken for a man. There were a few times where it was very innocently, where the person accidentally did that not meaning to and they later apologized. But I’ve also been told that I “look butchy” or something along those lines that’s very intentional. And that stings all the time. Essie Davis, in her role as Phryney Fisher in Miss. Fisher’s Murder Mysteries said it best, “A woman must first dress for comfort”. When I’m not working, yes, I wear what I like to call my “scruffs”. Whether it be PJ’s when I’m at home or sports clothing when I’m doing something outside. I wear what’s comfortable for me.

@@laurenmalcom5117 To think it now, that's maybe true. For the first time i thought it was Rawsons's or Priestley's but after that, to think it's logically, in this scene, Rawsons either Priestley still don't know how much close Ann and Anne relationship. But yea, thanks to that letter, we can saw that Ann side who is accept Anne who she is.😊😊

I am not a lesbian. Actually I am figuring out myself. I go back and forth between bicurious and bisexual I guess. But regardless it's amazing how much I relate what happened to Anne. No one ever older than I gave a malicious comment on my looks or behavior as long as I was polite and cleanly dressed but I have often been told I should be a man or take on a male role because I would wear pants when other girls would wear skirts and dresses and it was very frustrating and hurtful.

Lesbians, along with all other lgbtq people have always existed. There is not much recorded history of lgbtq people because of homophobia and it being illegal. One example that has survived though is Sappho, a female poet from ancient Greece, who wrote love poems about women. She actually lived on an island named the Island of Lesbos, where the word "lesbian" comes from!

I dont know whether the lad meant how she physically looked or what she was wearing and how she acts, and Marianne critiscising her. Made be she thought how she dressed made it more obvious about her sexuality or something. I would say shes strong masculine but not butch, and has feminity as well as she cares for Anne that also goes in to protectiveness aswell.

can't tell you how many children have asked..."are you a boy or a girl"...I'm deeply moved that they "see me"...an in between...a different gender... very touching. I always 1st check out the parent (eye contact) to receive permission to answer the child's question. Then I gently say..."thanks for asking me...you see I'm kind of a combo...like we're mostly taught girls are way over her (hold my hands apart) and that boys are waaaay over here. I, my dear Brave One (non-gendered) ....I am sometimes kinda here (middle) somedays I feel here...or here (little more to one side then the other) It's really great to be free of NOT just being 1 thing!...& thanks for asking!" They always know exactly what I'm talkin' about....and every parent (except 1x) has been soooo lovely and thanked me!!! (I think the parent learned something too!!!!) Then I often get to someplace private and cry. a bit ...because I was in a very tender position to say the truth and possibly help that child identify with what they recognize in me!!!! Very POWER-FULL!...very HEALING! Good for Anne! She's the same combo as I am! www.inzalaco-lesbianart.com
