He didn’t mention that while you can buy straps alone, you CANNOT buy the buckle without purchasing a strap. I swear every time I go in an Hermes store there is a customer absolutely fuming at a sales person over this since clearly they planned to buy the buckle and put it on a knockoff strap. This alone says enough about the belt itself and many of the people who wear it.

Yeah, I'd say it's tacky to wear a big bold status symbol as the "H" belt seems to be. When my mother was a girl in the 1940's, they used to purchase clothing, bring it home and immediately cut out the name tags - even though they weren't visible when wearing the blouse. That's how much it was considered 'tacky' to have someone else's name on your person - even if others couldn't see it! Thanks for the great info.

Thanks for sharing, not to be too rose coloured glasses about the past but just speaking about aesthetics the overall level of taste was simply higher. The other day I bought some socks by Pringle which is a renown Scottish brand. I was convinced the logo on the side would be hidden when wearing a shoe. Nope! The logo pops out over the top of the shoe. Disappointing. Visible logos really are one of the worst aspects of current fashion. To have people buy the stuff voluntarily is one of the biggest tricks marketers ever pulled.

As a leather craftsman I can say that the edges of H belts are not burnished, they are painted. To make it smooth and neat it takes much more time and skill then a folded edge but it last much longer then the second. But! Hermes don’t really care about the edges, their edges look terribly messy and rough, you can see even in the photos in this video. Professional craftsmen make way better quality then Hermes. I do admit that some bag styles are outstanding but most H goods are way overpriced

My two best belts are from an ebay seller who sells amish leather goods. They are made from 10 ounce english bridle leather. 1 1/4 inch width, they are one solid piece of leather. They are $34+ shipping and I've never handled a better belt. I bought two ten years ago, one in black and one in oxblood. The oxblood one had faded in colour and wasn't as sharp as it once was. So I dyed it chocolate brown and and bought a new one. The black one is still just fine. Quality wise save for the buckle (which I can change out and have at times) these are probably of a higher standard that what I'm seeing with Hermes, at least with raw materials. Either way I wouldn't trade a hermes belt for my amish made belt, unless I knew I could flip the hermes for a reasonable price. This video was informative and hilarious.

To my eye, it is a logo belt similar to Gucci but at twice the price. I believe logo belts are tacky. The belts I tend to wear most often are Allen Edmonds, which are well made but not reversible. They typically cost between $100-$150. Workmanship and material are excellent. I think they are worth it.

Luxury brands are an interesting beast. You can usually get the same or better quality for less but it doesn’t have the chachet as you mentioned. It’s a luxury brand, you pay the so called “luxury tax”. You have to decide if it’s worth it and for most it’s probably not.
@patsparks8731
@patsparks8731 2 жыл бұрын
Luxury brands also have a “design expertise” that goes along with a focus on quality. Combining creative art, style and trends....Design and status can in fact go hand in hand. Many of these Luxe brands have decades and decades of design and brand building and their quality reputations and hence sales are built on that....the brand is then “built over time”. Even though looking from a pure quality of materials and workmanship standpoint, it might look like it is overpriced. Status and design have always been an expensive proposition and not necessarily “practical”.

Many people buy expensive fashion items, even though they can't really afford it. Some people purchase such pieces because they believe it will help them climb the social ladder, when they attend various events and meet people. Others are just really interested in fashion and are ready to spend way more than they should on fashion. When criticized, they'll tell you that to them, owning an Hermes belt or Gucci loafers is more important than spending money on travel or some sport.
@SevenRiderAirForce

Yeah there are really different classes of wealth. Depending on where you are, everyone will have Hermes this or YSL that. They won't mind having the H because they like the neckties and the scarves and (*gasp*) the clothing that most people probably don't even know about. Very different than what I think are most people who buy these things, which is to serve as status symbols for status they don't actually have.

Raphael, I am a bit skeptical about your folded edge finish. Fist, I've never seen this finish on high-end belts, even at Duret Paris. Second, leather edges -- even burnished -- exposed to the type of friction occuring at the waist is at risk of getting damaged vs painted edges. Third, it looks less "neat" than painted edges in my opinion. Lastly, nicely painted edges is quite difficult to achieve and is often the mark of great craftmanship. It would be great if you could shed light on how you made your decision. Thanks!

I understand the criticism regarding the lack of information they provide on the materials. But generally, I’d rather buy these goods at the boutique, where the staff will most likely give you all the information you’d like. Also they often have a larger stock or will be able to order a product from a different store. Last but not least: if you ever decide to buy a Birkin/Kelly your chances depend upon your local purchase history. As silly as it is...

A picture of that belt is in Der Gentleman at pages 144-145. I always wondered what beltstyle it is whether it's some type of clamp buckle or microadjust buckle, didn't know it was proprietary. At 4:32 you show, it's a belt with holes. Thank you. No I don't want to wear that. I prefer suspenders for my pants if I can get them. If I have to wear a belt I prefer clamp buckle or microadjust style. The belt buckle belongs on the shoe. Even there, it's got to be a clamp buckle or microadjust style, preferredly. Unfortunately, they probably don't exist and I can't even find monkstrap shoes in shops anywhere. The normal belt buckle belongs on an overcoat. BTW, that's the wishes the book by Benrhard Roetzel raised in me. I started to want to wear suspenders, the real ones, and monkstraps. And jackets with vents that I don't have to unbutton when I sit down. But all the other folks who comment here always want to dress up, silly.

I rather buy a watch for ex. from a reputable company like tissot Rolex etc who does only watches and puts all effort craftsmanship and quality to make sure their name is not stained than a 'marketing "brand like Armani who at the beginnings was famous for clothes and now sells everything under the sun. Same thing for shoes bags etc. Or perhaps am I wrong Mr Schneider?

So a couple of things viewers are missing. Hermès is tailored for the elite class not the lower to middle class. This is where most people miss the message that Hermès sends. If your a millionaire then thats actually not an expensive belt, it’s the equivalent of a 50.00 belt to the middle class man. So yes we and I’m not rich, think that the price is high but those belts are not made for our budgets. This is why we need to shop where we are able to afford without feeling as if we over paid. If you got the money then that’s about average price. Anyway the belt is nice and if I purchased one it would be the most simplest and without any big H buckle. I would purchase it to know it’s of good quality and that it would last me for many years. I have learned that you get what you pay for!

Interesting! I like symmetrical belt buckles and modular systems so i actually have a knock off H buckle and also a Z buckle that i love to wear. Does anyone know of any other companies or brands that make symmetrical buckles? (asside from Ferragamo).

In regards to leather quality, I wonder what Rose Avil would say. His channel specializes in dissecting shoes and gauging the quality of all of the materials used, especially the leather.

Great infos. But I would just like to say I personally never wear a sports jacket or a suit without neckware. It is like desecrating to me but I think in a few years neckware will be completely antiquated and I am afraid the worth of one's ties will be only a few pennies.

I've never really understood the fascination of people over logos and brands, I mean, I undestand WHY it happens but I just don't see the point in paying larger sums to basically be a walking advertisement. Besides I've rarely seen anyone that actually likes the look of it that isn't also obsessed with brands.

Wondering how this reversible leather holds over time. I had a Ferragamo reversible belt that was split in all its length. Threw it away, didnt think at the time that I could have the leather replaced or repaired.

I like the much less flashy buckles like the Roulis. I also have a very ancient round horse head belt buckle from the 80s which I need to get a new blank for. The thing I like about their system is the post. Your belt holes don't wear badly with this system. My Gucci also has the same system and I just find it more comfortable than the strap and buckle closures.

I wouldn't be caught dead with a belt with the giant H buckle so everyone knows I have a Hermes (or most likely a knock off.) Status symbols with visible logos mean nothing unless your a complete phony. If I have a choice, I'd always choose the Fort Belvedere. I trust your advice, and I trust your products are of the highest quality.

This was an EXCELLENT video. Coincidentally I have been toying with the idea of buying a belt. EXCELLENT timing. I'm going to Miami Monday to look. Don't know gold tone or silver. Leaning towards gold. I have two pairs of boat shoes ( like top siders) made by Hermès. Under the name of John Lobb. $1,300 each pair. It's wonderful. So comfortable. And absolutely no one knows any different. I do. Kind of like.....do I wear a Rolex? Everyone knows....thus I'm Mr.Hoo-Ha. Or wear my plain understated Patek?

Does anyone know how to actually measure the strap? Mine says it's a 90, but it measures 105 cm. I need a new strap because I'm not as slender as when I bought it new. Mine is authentic, I bought it at the Rodeo Dr store about 1998.
