What's trending is how kids imagine a person coming from money would dress, which is almost comical coming from them - with funny results indeed. I can imagine next time they'll come up with the "venture capitalist" style and all of them will start to believe that VCs actually wear one-eyed glasses and top hats.

Classic menswear encompasses the history of working class and middle class fashion, as well as that of the wealthy. I would not use old money interchangeably with classic menswear because it is narrowed towards the latter.

@janerkenbrack3373 Жыл бұрын
My experience seeing old money, new money, no money, and other people's money, tells me that everyone dresses to impress their peers, not other people's peers. So it would follow that old money dresses for other old money people. And the one thing they seem to have in common, is the irrelevancy of cost of whatever others are wearing. You wouldn't ask, heaven forbid, and no one in that peer group would mention cost. It's in bad taste. Old money, in direct contrast to new money, doesn't want to upstage someone else, or chance drawing attention to someone's economic picture. How much money people have is not a meaningful measure of the person. And to draw attention to wealth (or the lack of) would be unkind. The entertainment media caricature of old wealth is often wrong about this, and think old money people are flaunting their wealth. That isn't old money. That's new money. So when they compliment someone on an item or outfit, it bears no relation on what label it is, or how much was paid. In this way old money is far more attentive to the actual product or style on that person. And both parties in such a conversation know that the other isn't judging them by something as mundane as money. That's something new money people do. And this means that they tend to shun items of dress that display labels. Displaying brands is the same thing as telling people what you spent. And when you compliment an old money person on some garment or item, they will just say thanks. And if ask them about it, they will often "forget" where they got it, or that they've had it for years, or it was handed down from their dad, or some other thing to convey something covered above - avoiding attaching the idea of cost to the item. If they tell you, are they bragging? Bragging isn't old money. But you needn't be a clotheshorse or have a huge closet filled with clothes (though you can, if you want), to be old money. But you must have the appropriate formality for the situation. And here you find attention often to a few excellent pieces for each type of activity. Mostly, the goal is to fit in well with the general ambiance of the place and occasion. If they are the best dressed in the room, it is a coincidence, not an intention. So yeah, a ball cap if you're doing ball cap stuff. And this can and often does lead to old money people wearing worn and repaired clothing. If you like something, honor it by mending and wearing. An old money people are not going to judge that repair negatively. The repair allows one to keep wearing something they like and enjoy. Remember, they are dressing for other people who would do the same. Look nice for the kind of people who don't care what you spent. New money is the opposite. New money is eager to display wealth, and more importantly, to compare wealth. They will dress to draw the attention of other people who are impressed by monetary wealth. They will spend more on cars and clothes than the old money does, simply because that is what s important. The value to them is how much it cost. This makes sense, because unless you've had money a long time, money is important. It is what allows you to have nice things. And the coveting of those nice things often motivates people to strive for more money. After a few generations, and with trust funds established, or basic needs thoroughly met, it is much easier to ignore wealth. This is true in a broader picture as well. Once you stop thinking about where you are going to get money, and so long as you live comfortably within your means, it is much easier to quite worrying about it. So old money people might have been friends since private school, but be widely separated by actual wealth. This makes keeping cost out of the conversation, and especially out of your presentation. Dress old money by dressing with understated taste, and avoid drawing attention to cost. Wear what is appropriate for the occasion following the rule in the last sentence. Don't try and show anyone up. Don't mention price or brand. Don't answer questions about price or brand with those you don't know very well, and don't insult the person who asked. That's the old money aesthetic.

Watch a lot of mafia and cartel bosses of today in interviews, photos, etc. But they also are associated with work, especially with company logos on them. Classic style is a much broader term than "old money". What "old money" does is it takes certain styles that some influencers (who themselves aren't typically old money) promote as something worn by people of a certain background. However, in the end it all boils down to Loro Piana baseball caps or Brunello Cucinelli sherling coats, so it's all about the brand name and *signaling* "old money". The mindet is no different than "hypebeasts" who just chase the clout and the brand name rather than quality. It's also literally a social media fad versus the people who cherish classic style are pasionate about the history of the garments, the fabrics, yarns, shoe construction and what not.

OMA is traditional British noble dress in my opinion. I have observed that American Old Money would usually wear clothing akin to traditional British college students uniforms (think Oxford and Eaton, which have inspired classic menswear). There's a wonderful episode of The Crown (S5E3) where an Egyptian man asks for the help of a valet that once served the Duke of Windsor, to integrate into British high society. Clothing choices for setting and activities are covered. As for American Old Money, the Great Gatsby movie is full of great examples from all the actors (even the extras). I looked into it and the costume designer said they consulted Brooks Brothers for their historical input. One time I did wear what might be an OMA ensemble to work (it was something I saw in movies when a rich person or someone who came into money would wear). It was a navy blue cashmere/wool blend blazer with gold buttons, classic cut khaki chinos, white dress shirt, red and blue tie, and black wingtips. My supervisor asked me to meet him in his office so we could talk about how I am dressing too nice for the work we do.

I try to combine it with lighter earth tones like beige, white, or light brown to help make the outfit feel more casual and easy going. I also pair it with darker earth tones like brown, navy blue, or charcoal grey. Camel hair is a fabric usually reserved for the colder times of the year, so when it comes to fabrics to pair with camel hair, materials and fabrics such as wool, cotton, corduroy, or khakis. Patterns would also be a great addition to combine with your outfit to give it more visual interest.

Old Money is less of a style than an attitude. - items are suitable for the occasion - Items have a long life, and won't look out of fashion in 15 years. - No branding, logos, or other advertising on your clothes. - Most Old Money people have little interest in clothing or fashion. I personally have four key factors that define the OMA, which are: 1. The exclusive wearing of bespoke/MTM and/or high-quality well fitted RTW/OTR garments. 2. A wardrobe colour palette that exclusively consists of black, navy blue, charcoal grey, midnight blue, steel grey, white, light blue, cream, ivory, camel, tan, chocolate brown and beige respectively. Colours like red, burgundy, pink, and green are reserved for statement pieces and accessories. 3. The lack of flashy logos and labels displayed on one's garments and emphasising colour, fit, material, and outfit coordination alone to stand out. 4. The exclusive lack of wearing modern accessories/footwear like baseball caps, trucker caps, sneakers (expect for when exercising), crocs, thongs/filp-flops, flashy watches, excessive amount of jewellery etc.

Informative video, thank you! There is some overlap between classic style and OMA, but classic style is not restricted to Ivy League or aristocracy. Classic style was worn by all classes over the centuries. Today's OMA movement has some parallels with the Preppie movement in the 1970s and 80s, which was built around (and restricted to the Ivy League look). Classic style has a richer history which includes military style influence and 19th century working class.
@tinad8561 Жыл бұрын
I was looking for this comment. Preppy style aped the fashion habits of a certain class and location (summers in Kennebunkport folks) without much discrimination-the silly looking was embraced along with the classic. New money tries too hard, including by trying to achieve the OMA. A bit like Niles in Frasier. Actual old money doesn’t care too much and, here in the UK, are often more relaxed about what they wear. As commented below, aristocracy are usually scruffy because they have no money. The main thing is not to judge or think less of people just because of what they wear.

It seems that this trend is aspirational in a way that has long been popular in the United States, and manifests in different ways at different times. @@gentlemansgazette Thanks for the response. Like I said, I've really been enjoying the content. I've somewhat recently started worrying more about quality of the items in my life, leading to considering more vintage items; for example, I switched to fountain pens and quality paper, and have started sending longhand correspondence again. I've always liked the *look* of dress clothes (Edwardian attire, ala Poirot, is appealing), but never felt comfortable in them; wearing an off-the-rack suit for weddings, funerals, and job interviews has always been an exercise in frustration between overheating, tight or loose fits, and awful shoes. Thus, I've always just put function over form. I generally am in hawaiian shirts, cargo shorts or jeans, and Keens (one of the few shoes I've found that fit me well). I started down the clothes rabbit hole by looking at adding a waistcoat over a button down shirt and jeans, but now I find myself wanting to up my game a bit. I could see doing a decent shirt, waistcoat, and suit pants as step one, then upgrading shoes and adding a suit coat or something as step two.

They are exclusionary, their wealth and culture are passed through inheritance, their wealth goes back more generations than they can follow, they have the absurd kind of wealth that seems like it will never run out (although it has in quite a few cases), they wear the same clothes in their respective countries... I've certainly never heard anybody argue that nobility doesn't count, and I've heard a few people argue that *only* nobility counts, that *everyone else* is new money by comparison.

Aristocracy is by definition “old money”. Since there is no aristocracy in the US, as there is no monarchy, the families that are, essentially, aristocratic in America, are referred to as “old money”. Old money are not necessarily super rich. Some of them might actually be struggling financially, but they still belong to the “right circle”, they count many generations of ancestors, sometimes going back to colonial America and the founding of the United States, they have connections, they graduate from elite universities, even if that is very expensive for them, they belong to elite social clubs, even if paying the dues is something they can barely afford. Belonging to the elite social circle is something they hold on to by all means, even if that’s not something that they can, objectively, afford. Speaking of style, of course there are plenty of people among the “old money”, who don’t really care at all about what they wear, there are those who dress fashionably, and then there are those who stick to the “trad” look. However, it probably wouldn’t be incorrect to say that whatever they choose to wear, they prefer restrained styles and avoid ostentation, although, there are exceptions to every rule of course, and occasionally you may see “old money” wear canary yellow pants, pink bow ties, and other such questionable attire.

Honestly, unless it's a special event or they're over 50, the old money around here (UK countryside) wears whatever is expensive and in fashion. Ironically it's often the new money townies who wear classic menswear.

My brother is getting married in 2 years, and he assumed that him and the groomsmen would just get their tux’s from Men’s Warehouse. I can’t have that and I offered to take him somewhere with a little more authenticity. We live in Wisconsin, so does anyone have any suggestions of places we could go for fittings and so on either in Wisconsin or Minnesota? Money won’t be a problem since it’ll be my wedding gift to him. Any suggestions or advice is appreciated.

Speaking of old money and quality, if you ever do anything on classic outdoors pursuits, I'm your man on split bamboo fly rods. Not so much on streamside attire....or English shotguns

I'm sure that the GG staff have good intentions. Viewed a few episodes - mildly entertaining/amusing. IMHO: shop Ben Silver and Brooks Brothers, or go the bespoke route. Some good deals can be had on reduced offerings. It seems that GG tries too hard to assemble ensembles; reminds one of a adolescent desperately seeking to appear dapper. The majority of the showcased dressings appear contrived, not effortless. One thing does ring true. Know the rules, then bend them to create a GENUINE personal style; don't follow trends. For active wear go to Burberry, Beretta, and Eddie Bauer. The Belvedere shop does offer some nice accessories. p.s. the late Julian Bream knew how to best dress for the occasion and Vladimir Horowitz was THE bow tie ambassador.

I find the whole thing rather silly since the whole class notion of "old money" doesn't really exist anymore. I live in New York City and anytime I'm on the Upper East Side, the rich people there dress rather pedestrian and unremarkable.

I remember reading somewhere, unfortunately I forgot where, that OMA came from the depression. During the depression many wealthy people were being kidnapping. So to “blend in” a little more they started buying less flashy items and stopped wearing extravagant items. While still maintaining the idea of having the appropriate clothes for every occasion. To this day if you look at the cars that come in and out of old money country clubs (the one by me has a small sign that it could be easily overlooked), often they’re not the BMW or Mercedes. You’ll see Chevrolets, Fords Volvos and Jeeps.

Classic Style is a way of dressing, while "Old Money" is a social class, especially since it's the US American version of "nobility" basically.

I certainly hope that this youtube channel and others like it revive interest in proper gentlemanly attire, 🕴⌚️🎩 because we are seeing far too many adult men in hoodies nowadays.😒

I would have thought that as far as clothes are concerned, it is pretty much obligatory to go with bespoke clothing if you are trying for an old money aesthetic - anything else would be faking it. And it seems to me that an old money person would be able to tell just from looking whether something is or isn't bespoke.

you would be surprised by the number of hand-me-downs and thrift shops finds some really old money with _lots of money_ have in their closet... 😼 at least that's what i've noticed in France, England and Tuscany, especially in the countryside dwelling ones and wine and olive producers for the italian ones but less so for the northern industrial type. 😽

"Old money" seems like a combination of "Classic" and "Quiet luxury". I prefer "Office Goth" rather than old money or quiet luxury.

99.9% of the time, I am perfectly fine wearing jeans and an untucked shirt, the only way I know to wear a shirt. This must be sacrilege to you. I enjoy the channel because of how different it is from the way I think about clothing, but I do think it's all down to what makes us ourselves.

I don’t care much about the terms. I just think the late Victorian Menswear is the best.
