While I am not a fan of the look myself, the key to pulling it off seems to be to breach the formality intentionally. One could wear a full slim fit blue suit with a crisp white t-shirt and equally white but rather basic sneakers. Richard Ayoade pulls a t-shirt with a suit off, by mostly following what you suggested: summer suit fabrics with a breton striped t-shirt for instance.

I love you guys but I think you aren't thinking outside the box with this one. I can show you images from 1930s Esquire showing a jacket worn with a t-shirt. The point is combining a casual enough and ideally summery enough jacket with a t shirt that provides a pop of colour and contrast. So for example a rumpled cotton or linen jacket with patch pockets worn with a colourful striped knitted t shirt is an excellent leisure/resort look. In your video you are wearing a peak lapel jacket with a plain grey t-shirt, probably to prove a point, but it is exactly the thing to avoid when sporting this look: a formal looking jacket, drab colours and a t-shirt that looks like underwear.
@gentlemansgazette5 жыл бұрын
A very well-reasoned comment, and one supported with evidence, no less! Yes, we're familiar with the types of vintage illustrations to which you're referring; the operative phrase would here be "an excellent leisure/resort look." While we fully agree that such a combination looks quite smart, the march of men's daily wardrobes to less and less formal options means that in practical terms, the man of today, when attending a resort or similar locale, will likely be the type to *either* be interested or required to wear jackets while there, *or* be the type for whom a T-shirt is sufficient. There's not going to be much overlap these days! In summary, we appreciate your comment, agree with your assessment, and admit that such "resort wear" was perhaps worth a mention, but also contend that as it's a rather niche style choice today, our central thesis remains applicable to most men. Thanks for watching and commenting! :) - Preston

I think it's worth noting that the whole point of this look is dressing down the jacket so it can be utilized OUTSIDE of the normal circumstances. A lot of guys are sick of the way men's fashion standards hem them into boxes and "formality levels". Women's clothing is more fluid, and in some cases just the addition/subtraction of one minor piece can make a woman's outfit transcend boundaries. The question men are now asking is "why can't I do that?" The answer is that our clothing has been idealized and stereotyped quite heavily over the years, and we haven't been nearly as active in challenging those previously set stereotypes/expectations (i'm talking us everyday guys, not male fashion models). It may have started ion the 80's, but I think now is a perfect storm of us beginning to play more with our style options (especially thanks to all these very helpful style youtubers, even if I don't always agree with their "rules") It seems to me you're coming from the wrong place in this video. You've tucked in the t-shirt (to try and turn its formality up to be in the ballpark of the jacket), your sportcoat is buttoned (this further hides the shirt) and while peak lapels can be really cool, I think trying to pair a tee shirt with a peaked lapel coat is almost always going to look bad. Having a less structured blazer or even a coat that has less formal features will make the look much less jarring. Its not about making the tee shirt more formal, its about making the jacket a seamless and even useful addition to a casual look. We love how jackets make us look, and we are finally saying: "screw it, I'm going to make this something I can wear more than six times a year". While you can't pull this off with every jacket you own (and probably wouldn't want to anyway for reasons mentioned above), having one or two less structured/casual jackets will really open up your options and add some depth to your style.

I feel the same. I'm mostly sticking to casual wear, as due to covid there is barely any reason to dress up at home, and besides I'm an uni student, I would be dressing up even by just wearing a button-down shirt). But even so, if it's too hot to layer, I now wear a polo. If it's cold, I love merino knits. If in between, very light cotton knits or long sleeve henleys. Could probably use some long sleeve polos now that I think about it - but they're much harder to find. Basically I only wear t-shirts as undergarments now, kind of like how they were meant to be used in the past, or when going to the gym. If you're looking for a non-formal jacket like I was when I decided to upgrade my style, I absolutely recommend knit jackets, which is something I have not seen GG mention yet. I bought 2 on deep discounts, and it has been my favourite item of the whole year. It's as comfortable as knitwear, because it technically is, but looks just a little bit smarter than a shawl collar cardigan (which is itself a nice casual jacket alternative). In wool, it also works nicely as day outerwear for early fall (possibly adding a light scarf if not wearing high-necks, since the collar doesn't button), or alternatively fits under real outerwear as a mid layer if it's colder. Crucially, they are much easier to find in decent quality at an affordable price than a good sports jacket (which are either very expensive or very poor quality), and perhaps more importantly the fit is much more forgiving as the jacket is completely unstructured and unlined and offers the natural stretch of wool knits.

His coat is way too large in size and you got to wonder if he could have picked out a worse combination to say no to a “T” and sport coat! The ‘80’s look with an updated polyester & spandex “T” and slim cut blazer looks great ... provided you have the body to pull it off. Probably not, for 90% of today’s men! No baggy suites with the “T” but with slim cut is very nice! Keep the jacket to size 40 or 38 to consider it!

I really like the look because it's a little bit disheveled and that's within the realm of my personal style. One thing though, the jackets/suits I'm wearing for this look are all in light colours and in light/casual fabric. That would mean colours like light grey, off white, cream, and an unique one I have: wasabi green. The fabrics will mostly be open weave and light, sometimes I even purposefully wrinkle them a bit to make it look more casual and disheveled. Ps. I've given this one a lot of contemplation over many years. I was raised with many of the early 20th Century style guides that you all are versed with, but my love of that Ordnungssinn has often clashed with the reality of contemporary "anti-style". While I'm glad to see a large cohort of the younger generations rebelling against the anti-style with a re-discovery (and re-interpretation) of the classics, I think that at some point, society at large will need to find an equilibrium. I think that the 1980s "Miami Vice" style that persisted well into the early 1990s may actually be a preview of what is to come, not because of nostalgia (though I'd point out that it's nearly half a century ago, so not as recent as you alluded to,) but rather because of the methodology from which it arose. I watched an interview with the costume designer for the show, wherein she described the psychology, methodology, and practicality that dictated the outfit's evolution and construction. Many of those principles apply to the present. As the influences of cost, an increasing lack of formality in the work and public spheres, and the ever-warming climate continue to pressure men into more minimalistic attire, they will pursue a type of outfit that provides the most utility using the least elements. For a while, this manifested in a plague of cargo pants and shorts, no doubt influenced by the militancy of those times, but now the argument can be made for the retention of the jacket as a means of both carrying and concealing all the bulky, weighty necessities of our times: cell phones, wallets, key & security fobs, sunglasses, etc. With non-cargo style shorts, this can be paired with a vest to accomplish a similar goal. Sadly for me, the tie is all but a non-starter; I work in a white-collar field and deal with both business leaders and financiers, and I haven't seen a necktie in years; were I to wear one, I might as well be wearing a Homburg. I still wear a button-up shirt, and even that alone makes me the dressiest man in my office, which means the dress-shirt's days may be numbered also. So in an effort to stay ahead of things instead of behind, I've been experimenting with the "T-shirt and jacket" look, and I believe it can be done- if one applies the design principles that underpin our many style rules and displays intent in their application. It's not just for summer heat either, with a turtleneck (or my preferred mock-neck) underneath, one can fare well in the cooler times also. In both instances, one will have a look that is modern, clean, and minimalist, while still looking noticeably smart and professional.
@Kaleki935 Жыл бұрын
That was basically Pretentious for "it's too dramatic of a difference to commit to a full suit in daily life". Astutely noted... in the 2020s. Also the climate is cooling both by average and the heights, so maybe dismount your high horse and study reality as is rather than outsourcing all thought to others? Suits were always best worn in cooler areas, hence the "miami vice" style you noted which 'coincidentally' is nearly identical to the Mediterranean style. It'd be far more accurate to note the 1% drop in testosterone EACH YEAR since we started recording it in the 80s, that's probably why people complain about how hot the suit can be rather than use their brain to wear it properly for their area. Or note the globalization of communication, now we have the unprecedented luxury of not only knowing, but comparing styles on opposing sides of the globe in an instant which leads people to dress on appeal rather than function. But yeah, world getting hotter or whatever, because politician funded "scientists" say so

I personally wear this look quite a lot, but never in a formal setting, although I do wear it quite differently than in this video, I wear blue jeans and matching blue Cole haan fabric wing tips, dress socks, a brown leather belt because it matches accents on the shoes, then I leave my shirt untucked so that it does not look very formal, and I wear a blazer/jacket that has a suitable pattern, I never wear a non patterned jacket with this look as often times they are too formal. For me this style works, and I like how it looks, but I would NEVER wear it in an even somewhat formal setting because I think it should be a bit of a more stylish version of a dress down outfit.

My brother works for a video game company. So as you may imagine the dress code is ... "no distressed stuff but anything else goes" When I visited I completely forgot to check if people were in jeans. On topic though, said brother is fond of blazer & t-shirt combo. You should still follow the general guidelines: make sure the blazer/suit is form fitting and make sure that the t-shirt isn't something too unprofessional. So no punk / metal band shirts. t-shirt should also be somewhat form fitting as well. Still, outside of those very specific environments I don't think blazer/t-shirt is a good combo. As you mentioned, it ranks below smart casual and so there are very few restaurants, for example, where you can get away with it. Maybe something like a family friendly dining with no/casual dress code? I certainly wouldn't wear it on a boat cruise unless I was hitting the buffet, and even then I could get away with a t-shirt and pants, so why have a blazer when a casual jacket or hoodie would suffice? As you said, just forego it altogether. It's a moot point for me anyway as I don't own a blazer and would never pair a *suit jacket* with anything informal.

I always wear a long sleeve shirt with an undershirt to dissipate perspiration and keep skin tones beneath from ruining the look of my dress shirt. High heat and humidity can leave you looking wet in about 15 seconds during this time of year. To be seen in this climate wearing a suit means you are attending an event, function or meeting requiring such. Wearing a jacket with a T shirt here would just make the wearer look confused. Thanks for the great video.

I think a solid choice for this scenario that needs a mention (especially if we’re going the Henley route!) would be the grandad shirt. I don’t know if you use that term in the US but it’s the shirt with a simple stand collar, almost as though the folded down segment of an ordinary dress shirt has been removed, and as a casual shirt that removes the stuffiness of a collar it’s an excellent middle ground in situations like this; linen under a lighter seersucker for the summer and then a sturdy Oxford cloth version under a flannel or tweed jacket for the autumn months tends to work. I know it’s not Classic Menswear but neither is the T-shirt under a jacket so

Then a casual jacket, and you're ready to go! This look can be great for if you're working in tech, academia or media; times when you want to have a bit of smart-casual trendiness, but no level of formality is required. This is not a formal look AT ALL, so bear that in mind!

It’s not what I would wear in a formal situation. But - probably not your typical audience - men not older than mid 30 can easily wear t-Shirt plus jacket when going to a bar with friends or a club. Does - in contrast to your statement - increase the style level of the t-Shirt rather than downgrading the jacket. It also gives you more flexibility to react on temperature. I sometimes go for that when going out

T-shirt with a jacket is only okay, if your shirt gets stained in battle, and it would look odd to keep it on. Also, a Polo or the Henley only work in casual situation for me, like the t-shirt. In other terms, its an emergency option.

Talking about blazers makes me think of high school. Our uniform was all-black with a shield-shaped badge on one side of the blazer and jumper with a design reminiscent of a medieval crest. I always thought it was really cool and stylish. And I had some excellent school shoes that withstood drawing pins without me noticing. (I did Art as a GCSE; drawing pins seemed to magically appear everywhere.)

It is my opinion (not that it's worth much) I have always thought that if one must.... This look is balanced better when the trousers have pleats and thus roomier in the torso and leg.. no?

As always, an outstanding presentation. I have found that if one is familiar with basic style sense, you can be very creative. For example a un-structured jacket affords one more options. And of course the pattern, color, fabric weight, lapels, buttons, and so forth play a vital part in the style equation. I know that the environment, eg: weather, geography and occasion etc. can be just as important as the previously mentioned factors. I say this with some experience from living on or near the Pacific Ocean my whole life. At any rate you fellows do an amazing job. I've always had an affinity for vintage/classic clothing. I'm a big fan of Art Deco'! I often dress boldly and more often than not get a decent amount of positive feedback. I think that maybe due to the time and effort I put into coordinating the pieces. I was a professional Chef for some time and then a high-end Decorator specializing in Historical Restoration and Faux finishes. Again I really get a ton of ideas from you folks! Peace be with you and yours. primarily

In my opinion, I think that this look can only be pulled off depending on the suit/jacket material and I also think that a higher V-neck can be worn but polos would definitely be the safe bet. For wimpy collared polos I use the Fashion Anchor and so far I haven't had any issues with it. Still, I really liked the viewpoint, not everyone can pull it off honestly

First of all every piece that I wear for this look is denim, like blue jeans. Except for my tee-shirt which is always one of those "so and so went somewhere and all I got was this tee-shirt" models. Then to be doubly sly, I wear a light weight scarf in order to keep the jackets collar clean when I sweat. Usually I lead the pack, coz very few people wear scarves in the summertime. Oh, yeah tennis shoes too. Like in the movie Fletch.

I’m another one that would not pair a T-shirt and jacket. If I were forced to, I would match the color of my slacks or play from my pocket square more closely. A better quality shirt would help as well.

Wearing a suit jacket/blazer/sports jacket with a t-shirt might be the biggest "no no" when trying to go for a more stylish and formal look in the summer. (My opinion)

One of the things that i can't stand is wearing a t-shirt with a jacket , it looks odd and you can always wear a casual shirt , maybe a %100 cotton shirt that makes you comfortable in summer , it is just odd to me and it is not looking good either so always go with a shirt if you want to look like a modern gentleman.

I recall in the early 2000’s, some of my colleagues, at a Wall Street based global ibank, would wear this same look - these gentlemen were, to a person, from the southeast and southwest regions, whereas we were alway meeting in NYC, London, or similar financial centre locations.... kinda funny that my wife would always point out their fashion faux pas

Short sleeve shirts look way better than polos. Polos aren't very stylish. Far too casual and plain. Can you explain why you think a short sleeve shirt looks dorky compared to a polo? I don't understand your logic. They are much more appealing than polos. Polos are like sportswear.

I think a henley is a better option than a T shirt or a polo. So many polos have those floppy collars that you have to constantly check it.

A T shirt with a sport coat is OK, if you really want to do that. However, a T shirt with a suit brings you back to those thrilling days of yesteryear, the nineties. Don't be surprised if someone asks you "What is Love?" or they made a request that you not hurt them. A t shirt with a suit is just one gold chain away from spending a Night at The Roxbury.

I'm not a fan of the look in general, but the neutral color approach makes it look so much worse. I think the 80s version looks better because there's at least some color and contrast, but overall I have to say no. Nice Joseph Abboud coat, by the way

Lol I break your rules a lot. My office is very casual. Some days I'll throw on a screen print t-shirt with a suit jacket dark wash jeans and driving moc. I never tuck in the t-shirt and I never button the jacket. Most people in the office give a positive response to it. It shows personality and is a good balance between relaxed casual dress and business casual.

Wearing a t-shirt with trousers, for me preferably high waisted, and an odd jacket looks perfectly fine. In fact you see it quite often in for instance Japan. But of course if you dont’t have the body for it I can understand why you would advice against it. Looking good and dressing well/correctly aren’t always the same, and discouraging men from wearing a t-shirt because you have a bias result in a lack of variety under the prestense that a t-shirts is unstylish.
