Regarding the first story, I think that if you are in a public space like a park, it's not fair to ask other people to move just because you set up a camera and like the lighting. People are allowed to move freely within public spaces. If I get to a park and sit down to enjoy the view and play with my dog and someone asks me to move because I'm in "their frame" I would find that rude and entitled (regardless of nationality).

First of all, it's important to be mindful when asking a local, especially in their own neighborhood, "Are you almost done?", is not the question in on itself but within the context it was asked. Even in a public space, this kind of question within that context, can come off as rude or intrusive in many cultures, including Mexico, it might be seen as offensive, even if that's not your intention. As for gentrification, it's true that it's often linked to the influx of gringos, but the real driving force behind it is large real estate corporations. These companies target "hot markets" around the world, buying up properties in bulk, which gives them the power to raise rent prices. This creates a ripple effect, forcing smaller landlords to raise their prices to compete, which makes rent skyrocket. It's a global issue, and it's particularly out of control in the U.S. This is one of the reasons why many Americans are moving to Mexico, and unfortunately, the problem is following them here. It's also worth noting that this isn't the fault of individuals like former mayor Claudia Sheinbaum. No one really anticipated such a large number of young, working Americans relocating to Mexico City. Historically, only retirees moved to smaller towns like San Miguel and coastal towns, but this wave of gringos migrating to major cities is new. You might want to look into "RealPage" property management platform-it's an algorithm used to set rent prices around the world. NBC has a documentary about it. Good luck Gringito.

Such a huge point about the corporations such as State Street, Blackrock, Berkshire and their subsidiaries dominating the hot markets in the US. I think greed is largely to blame. Greed is a natural human characteristic, so there is little that can be done. Those that are in a position to exploit will do so. Those folks with extra apartments will prefer to "rent" or Uber to a foreigner that can afford 30k pesos for a nice apartment in a nice neighborhood, instead of renting to their Mexican countrymen for a (much) lower price. Politicians will sell their souls every chance they can, so that is not surprising. However, absolutely, the high demand exists directly because of the folks that come to CDMX from other countries where rents are higher still. KZbinrs, digital nomads, remote workers, retirees are a portion of these folks from elsewhere, that drive up the rental prices for everyone. If there is less demand, the prices will go down and may return to reasonable levels, although this is doubtful at this point. It's entirely possible that the same happens the other way around, where workers come to the US and undercut the American workforce. This also causes strong animosity against the foreigner worker. Also, human nature. Continue to do what you do.

Thanks so much for the insight my friend. Well-said and I couldn’t agree more. The foreign worker/job loss is a very real thing in my state.. but once again it comes down to greed, in this case by the employers, managers and corporations. Once upon a time I had a job in Key West, Florida, renting scooters and golf carts to people… the big boss started me at $10/hr (this was in 2007), while meanwhile, my Brazilian co-workers who had been working there 6 months, were getting $5/hr. He doubled his labor force by being a greedy dirtbag.

HI!!!! TRUE gentrifier here!!!!! So, gentrification is done by people like me: OWNERS, we own the apartments, houses, stores, etc, and we rent them as a businesses. Second point, 95% of us are MEXICANS. Again, OWNING, comes with rights, one of those is to do with my property as I please, and if I please to milk the blond cow, temporarily grazing on my pasture, well, so be it! And NO, Mexico's main income IS not remittances, remittances are like 7% of the GDP, aka, peanuts...

I, born in Mexica and raised in the USA, can't understand why you would ask someone in a public space "when he'd be done (it's the same)". I understand why we could do it here in the states but also understand why you wouldn't do it in Mexico. So despite your experience in Mexico there are some things to learn....It's OK. As for gentrification, lose lose situation unique again to Mexico. Despite the US being full of Mexicans, the feelings of Mexicans being pushed out of the market in Mexico is mostly bad because while the rich will just benefit more than they already were, the poor will be hurt more than they were already (double whammy). What's the worse that can happen? More money makes it into Mexico with little trickle to the working class and some nice neighborhoods become more like a US neighborhood and less Mexican????? I think we can all agree that is not necessarily the best outcome.....I don't know I don't have a solution-

There are historic reasons why some Mexicans dislike Americans, and it does not really have to do with "gentrification." Today, there has been an incredible influx of Americans and other foreigners to a couple of neighborhoods in Mexico City, and this has caused displacement of locals. But the displacement is caused by the owners of the real estate that raise rents, or rent via Airbnb. There is nothing wrong with people being business minded. Mexicans are by an large business minded, and welcoming! And, there's so many other neighborhoods in Mexico City and elsewhere that are economically depressed, and so the displacement of the locals from Condesa or Roma will improve those other areas as they move there. It is great to see Mexico having momentum and attracting immigration. In the end, Mexicans and Americans have a shared future - nearly every Mexican has a friend or a relative living in the US. We are two nations sharing a past and a future like no other.

CDMXer here. Like other Mexicans commented already, we love to see foreigners love Mexico and most are happy or at least ok for you making home here. This is easy to proof, one just needs to jump into any expat KZbinrs’ channel and read the comments. Most Mexicans are in approval. The key here is respect our culture and enjoy with respect. Your enjoyment is our enjoyment as you guys put Mexico in a good image. Much needed as the MSM hasn’t for ages. (worldwide, including our own MSM). Of course there would be a few bunch who would not want expats here but this isn’t personal or anything to do with ‘gringos’, this happens everywhere. As long as expats adapt to us and not the other way around, things should move smoothly most of the time. (Not perfect, but most of the time). That’s my take. Cheers amigo.

Great video. Gentrification happens everywhere. In this case, the major of CDMX made a bold move that affected the rental market for locals. Americans living in Mexico City with purchasing power is a great thing for restaurants and coffee shops. The salsas are a different story. Please learn to enjoy picante.

What the city really needs from foreigners is to get to know different places and neighborhoods that are also good places to live, such as Pedregal, San Angel, Tlalpan Centro, San Jeronimo, Napoles, La del Valle, and countless other neighborhoods, even in the State of Mexico, such as Huixquilucan and other places, and thus the interest in more places could be dispersed and the multiculturalism of Mexico City could really be taken advantage of. Not everything is Roma, Condesa, Centro, Reforma, Polanco, and Santa Fe. Show places like Ciudad Universitaria, the Coyoacan nurseries, go into the ecological zone of Cuemanco with its pier and canoeing trail, the National Film Library, the Interventions Museum, and hundreds of other historical museums,the librarys, not always the anthropology museum, the plant markets of Xochimilco, areas like Ajusco, the Central Market, the Desert of the Lions, get to know the Cuicuilco Pyramid, and other activities. different from having coffee and eating in restaurants in the Cuauhtémoc district, that would disperse resources more and they would be very welcome everywhere.

I think it’s important to remember that the Mexicans who live and work in the United States are continually subjected to judgment, hate, and verbal abuse. In fact, the hate and judgment toward them is part of why I packed it up and moved to México. If I have to take some heat while living here because of the current and past grievances against them, then so be it. After all, the kindness I receive from 99% of everyone else I encounter continues to feed my soul. 💚🤍♥ ¡¡Gracias México!! 💚🤍♥ As far as who is to blame... You said you want our thoughts, and my thought is it's not our country. Therefore, how they want to run it and how it impacts us is irrelevant. I know it's hard for foreigners not to have comments, concerns, or feelings about our experiences in México when something is so foreign to us. However, we are guests/immigrants/expats, and if we want to live the way we did, then we need to move back to where we feel most comfortable. Never forget, we moved here because WE LOVE México, its culture, and its people. Your facts and presentation may be true, yet it's still coming from an us versus them mindset, That's my perspective, and I am open to a conversation. Peace to All!! Fist of all, people (both Americans and Mexicans) are using words that they don't know the meaning: Gentrification is the process whereby the character of a poor urban area is changed by wealthier people moving in, improving housing, and attracting new businesses, typically displacing current inhabitants in the process. So This happens in every city in the US too. 2) Mexico's economy is the #15th in the world. There are thousands of Mexican people living Mexico city making more money than if they were living in the US, Why? because of shortage of a high educated individual to run multinational companies in Mexico. 3) Gentrification is not new in Mexico City, it's been happening for decades. This is why 22 millions of inhabitants live in the Metro area of Mexico City. Yes, Mexicans have been displacing Mexicans for years. The difference is that with the Pandemic a few more thousands have arrived at only 4 areas making this trend more visible than before. Do Americans really move the Mexican market? Not really, real estate prices move up at the same rate in the entire city. Yes, no all zones are the same but they move the same rate. 4) I give you an example why people moving to Mexico city from the states do not matter, only 10% of Mexican GDP comes from tourism and out of this 10%, 8% is Mexican tourism (Mexicans moving within Mexico) and 2% is foreign tourism so 2% is relatively nothing as a percentage of the GDP. A few years ago there was senator from State that has a lot of beaches well he proposed to ban spring breakers he argued that they bring more problems to his cities than what they leave in revenue. So guys please just stop with that argument that Mexico needs your money. 5) it's laughable but many people that are complaining about Americans in the Mexico are South Americans and Centro Americans. 6) By the way, only 5% of the mexican population speaks english so when people write a negative comment in english, I said that most probable is that they are not Mexicans commenting. 7) Most Mexicans see the benefits that the US and Canadians bring to the country something that can not be said about South American and Centro Americas

The inflation of the dollar in the US, makes prices go up in Mexico, Central America, South America. But being that said, I see so much change in Mexico, for the better. But better means more expensive. When people in Mexico see prices rise by 40% or more, they automatically point the finger at Americans, Canada, and Europe. Don’t take it personal. They are jealous that you are able to speak Spanish quite well.

I think point #1 is not CDMX policies, that's #2. #1 is what is happening in the US, because #2 alone is not what makes people move into Mx. What is happening there that is driving all people to migrate? California to Tx and other states, and other states in turn, to other countries. Is it greed from digital nomads, or the fact that wages in US cannot keep pace with inflation? I've seen several videos where people say the cost of living in several US cities is just not affordable anymore. Is this due to US Policies? Corporations? Even Pandemic? Now, Sheimbaum might have had that arrangement, but CDMX is not the only place where gentrification exists (Aijijic, San Miguel, Merida, Tijuana, etc...) so I wouldn't think CDMX policies alone is the biggest contributor.

I think is a mix of the historic racism and attitude us citizens when Mexicans immigrate or as you call them become expats in the US Also the fact that there is no recognition that they are immigrants themselves to the point they call themselves something else as expats to separate themselves with the immigrant term. Also the fact that there are right out aggressions against Mexican culture in many instances that we know of and we assume there are sparse ones that he have no knowledge of m. Also there is a lot of crime tourism. USA citizens do in Mexico. That together with other factors you’ve mentioned has started to shape people’s minds.

@@theropemonster I mean a lot of these actions come from many preconceptions experienced and also sadly it is political. As you mentioned no one mentions Sheimbaum deal with Airbnb. I’ve found out a very small amount of the population knows it. Just like the political environment in the USA is permeated with blind followers who won’t listen to reason the same with morena. You can show these people how the ruling party is tearing the country apart and they refuse to listen and to see it. To be honest I believe that you and your community should just try your best to educate yourselves. I suggest you to make Mexican friends learn Spanish, learn about the culture, cooperate the best way you can, if you are not paying taxes and there’s no way you can contribute to that then volunteer by teaching English to people that could greatly benefit from them for instance. Act as you know they like immigrants to act like in the US for example. And maybe this may sound silly but you don’t see Mexican men wearing shorts in Mexico City do you?

Thank you RM for covering this so important, controversial and difficult subject. The same thing is happening in Toronto, Spain, Indonesia and all over bc of foreign investors setting up shop. To get affordable housing, you have to move out of the big cities. But as you said, it's a shared responsibility btw locals, governments, and ex-pats (aka immigrants). For this reason, I always try to stay at hotels vs airbnbs, and eat and shop locally as much as possible. Sometimes I think that we gringos should be renting at a higher price bc we can afford it, and leave the more affordable rentals for locals, but sometimes I think that it's not the way to go? It's so complicated, and it's hard to know the right thing to do 😢

We had the same thoughts about showing the Hotels some love when we first got here to CDMX and did that for about 10 days before finally renting a place directly from a local at a very fair price for the both of us! Someone already commented my thought about the REAL cause of gentrification (I don't really like that word) is GREED If Mexicans don't want the rent, food, car ect prices to go up, stop charging higher prices to foreigners, just because you know they can and will pay. Even the simple stuff at the market, prices double as soon as my white face shows up. This has happened to my wife n I several times through the years. My wife being Mexicana shops without me being near her, so we get a different (better) price. You have made valid points on all parts of your topic here. Viewing the topic from both sides realistically. A pat on the back for staying calm and polite. But also using the situation to educate.

There is certainly a lot of greed surrounding these issues and there no shortage by the people running the short term rental operations or allowing them to operate at such scale with zero regulation. As far as the shopping, I just experienced that lol… this guy at the market tried to charge me $120mxn/kilo for avocado…I obviously declined…shortly after asking him the price, I asked a nice old lady how much she had just paid for her avocados and she said $70/kilo. Why not just double it for the gringo, sin vergüenza?! 🤷🏼‍♂️😅😅.

My father always told me, "Al pais que fueres, haz lo que vieres" that goes like "Whatever country you go, do what you see" We Mexicans are very different from USA and European culture, we value community and kindness, also we have a little resentment towards gringos, so be mindful when you are here, because we open arms for everyone and welcome everyone to our home, but dont forget you are guests here. We hate people from outside telling us how to do things and specially and Im being very honest with this, gringos are the least type of people to tell us what to do, be wary of that next to you say something like "Are you almost done?" to a local, because if you were in a more barrio neighbourhood it could take a bad turn. Regarding gentrification, its a problem mainly from big corpos and very rich people that speculates with housing, people coming is not the problem its the result of poor laws for protecting local housing, still we welcome everyone but we demand cultural respect, we wont change and we hate that foreigners try to change us.

Aunque puedo entender que el marco legal y urbano para que se haya dado la gentrificacion haya partido (en parte) de las autoridades mexicanas, no es que los gringos no tengan responsabilidad alguna en aprovechar dada situacion, en primer lugar, y que no tengan demasiado respeto a la cultura mexicana. No creo que sea justo que les pidamos que cambien su manera de vivir completamente para ajustarse a la nuestra (aun cuando ellos hacen esto mismo), pero muchas veces vienen con muy poco respeto y muy poca apertura, queriendo vivir tal cual vivian en sus lugares de origen. Yo no vivo la realidad ni de la Condesa ni de la Roma, que son barrios que aún antes de la gringuiza ya estaban en un proceso de gentrificacion muy fuerte, pero puedo entender que no nos guste que vengan a tratar de imporner su forma de vida, aprovechando una situación economica que nos desfavorece como mexicanos, y que de la cual como país sacamos muy poco provecho. Estoy tratando de ser lo mas imparcial despues de escuchar tus argumentos, pero lo cierto es que gran parte de la población mexicana no les tiene ningun cariño ni ustedes como personas ni a su país, por razones económicas, históricas, culturales y muchas más. Y me parece que este videos es un buen acercamientos a tratar de hacer un dialogo entre las dos partes, por lo que me parece que mereces mi honestidad: Fuera de la situación urbana que se esta dando en nuestra cuidad, siendo claro, odio a tu país y odio a tu gente. Good video and info. I am in agreement with you, it is not all the “gringos” fault. The government of CDMX and other cities have encouraged AirBnB and other companies to come in and now owners of living units can earn more by renting to foreigners or wealthy Mexicans instead of the “locals”. It is also the fault of the Mexican property owners who want to make a lot more money at the expense of their own neighbors and fellow countrymen. They see the problems this is causing but don’t seem to care. Yes, foreigners have more buying power and can afford the higher rents but the city governments need to implement measures to address this issue. Yes, this is something nobody is or seems to want to talk about. It is a two-edged sword as foreigners and tourists bring in a lot of money that supports jobs but brings with it problems as well. Same thing is happening in other countries like Spain and Italy. I agree, foreigners who stay in Mexico need to adapt and learn the language and culture and not act so privileged, so there is enough blame to go around.

Hi buddy, generally, as you've noticed mejority Mexicans tend to not be as direct and more on the polite side. If I was going to ask some to move their dog, I would very extremely polite, around: Senior, le puedo pedir un favor? " And explain. Yet not guaranteed result as is up to the person in question. Gentrification is to blame on both sides, no? OK Gringos might overpay everything, but mostly because they don't know any better. They go and ask for a rental price (in English and so it is in some sort their own fault they get overcharged) and they are overcharged by the owner. And they pay because in their mind it is stil prety cheap. The owners on the other hand see a gringo come and ask for a rental price in English and think "hey, that gringo doens't know anything about renting prices in this neighbourhood. I can ask a lot more". So they overcharge. Other owners see this and think "why would I rent to a Mexican that I can only charge 10k pesos if I can rent to a gringo that i can ask 20k pesos and who pays this sum without any question asked?" Is there a solution to this? I don't know. There is theoreticaly. Gringos learn Spanish and look into current rental prices in a certain neighbourhood. So the don't pay double or triple the prices. And owners should be asking the same prices to gringos as they ask to Mexicans... but it is only human to try to make as much money as they can. Only other solution is the governement setting seilings on (rental or buying) prices. But if that is doable in Mexico?

I have a lot to say about this but I will try to condense it. I think you missed one of the bigger points. It’s the entitled Americans, foreigners, etc. that come to Mexico and are rude and condescending. It doesn’t take much to do a search and find videos of gringos behaving badly in Mexico. Matter of fact, I witnessed an incident in Puerto Vallarta myself and had to call an American lady out on her behavior towards other Mexican nationals (I’m a dual citizen born in the states with Mexican citizenship via my parents). Mexicans are some of the most hospitable people on the planet but come at us sideways, and it’s going to be a problem. Then they act like victims, of course (Karens, etc) However, most times cops will side with the foreigners even when they are in the wrong. Imagine how deep that cuts, in your own country? It’s the lack of respect. There are KZbinrs, Tiktokers, IGers, etc making videos about how “cheap” it is to live in Mexico and this is a MASSIVE problem because it’s not cheap for the locals living on Mexican salaries. And so families are being pushed out by all of this. Unfortunately, foreigners often come to Mexico (not all, but most) with a sense of entitlement. This is the real problem. People need to check themselves and be respectful. It is the responsibility of Mexican Americans to call out other Americans on their bad behavior and Americans who get it as well. I was always taught that when I’m a guest in someone’s home, to be respectful or leave. And that’s the mindset that foreigners need when visiting any country in the world. Don’t get me wrong, there are some people that will be rude on purpose and that isn’t representative of the majority. But you also have to be mindful and empathetic of situations. Gentrification of the modern day term for colonization….its still happening and brown people have it embedded in our DNA. It’s generational trauma that goes deep. Keep these things in mind.

Thanks so much for your insight there Liz, much appreciated! I can’t disagree… I’ve seen some behavior from Canadians and US citizens that makes me cringe in disbelief. Definitely a lot of Karens making it across the border. I think indeed one should have a love and respect for a country they are consider moving to, and for its people. I have however been on the other side of that living in Phoenix, AZ, as far as the police automatically siding with the immigrants/foreigners with total disregard for law or justice, so I know how it feels. And yes, it cuts deep and leaves scar tissue for sure. Claro que No, yo trabajo en el turismo y te puedo decir que de hecho es lo opuesto, los mexicanos siempre hemos sido conocidos por ser amistoso y recibir extremadamente bien a los visitantes y ese es justo el problema. La mayoría son unos agachados qué les da miedo decirle algo a los turistas cuando están haciendo algo mal, porque se vayan a ofender, o peor con tal de que les dejen dolares les dan la preferencia y los dejan hacer cualquier desmadre, como privatizar las playas, o andar menospreciando y denigrando a los mexicanos en su propio país con su depotismo y RACISMO. Desde luego que el turismo es una industria muy importante en México y si queremos una industria sustentable que traiga beneficios económicos a todos por generaciones, como mexicanos debemos de dejar de andar de vende patrias, y hacer valer nuestros derechos y defender nuestra cultura y recursos naturales.

great points on the interesting topic of gentrification , it's really annoying that gentrification is happening all over the world in every country and even here in florida usa. the only way to control it is local laws or regulations. I saw some video on reddit showing how many airbnb listings there are in cdmx, it was actually bonkers. it was a signficant portion of available housing and behind those profits are usually locals of that country making amazing money off of gringos coming in. we , as gringos , definitely are the fuel that feeds this problem but its up to local governments to do something if it really is affecting life there the citizens will vote for regulation over time. here in florida , these investors have changed our neighborhoods by adding a few airbnbs mixed in with big parties. pretty much everyone hates what has happened here (except investors lol), that's crazy that you are getting hate as a gringo !

Gentrification is a worldwide phenomenon. Mexico has always been sending people to the US (mainly) for as long as anyone can remember. Nowadays Madrid residents are now complaining that "rich" Mexicans are taking over many neighborhoods of Madrid and increasing the prices to the roof as well, so Mexicans are in fact doing the exact same thing that foreigners do in CDMX. I personally love foreigners, my partner is American and met him in Merida. (I am Mexican, CDMX born and lived all my life), I always treat people the way I want to be treated myself and I understand it is not easy to move into a different country and to effectively communicate with the locals. Learning Spanish is not easy, and it's unfortunate that American schools do not teach Spanish the way many private schools teach English down here., it would make it so much easier to adapt to Mexico.

If governments (mostly USA) would quit the money printing frenzy it would probably bring down inflation / rising costs, but it ain't gonna happen. Inflation hurts the poor and working class disproportionately because the wealthy have assets that grow in value with inflation. Sheinbaum saw an opportunity to add to the cities revenue and either didn't understand how it would affect locals or just didn't care.

Dont take it presonal bro as a Mexican tell you many Mexicans are in the usa working even with no papers, wouldnt be fare to ask foreigners to laeave you do an efford to learn spanish, talk about Mexican culture and we are grateful for that, Just ignore bad comments, mexican governent wasnt ready for lot of changes in the World and People like you that contribute in Mexican econony, blogging about Mexican life, showing other People around the World that everyone is welcome we really aprecciate, thanks for your time and love the walks that you do around the Neighborhood with great quality picture and great energy that you have, also While you show the World how México is we also learn english from you!
