I think you're getting a more consistent/even finish with that super blue than I'm getting with ferric chloride. I've been meaning to give super blue a shot, but wanted to experiment with the acid more. I use ferric chloride in a strong 1:1 ratio with water & it only takes 5 minutes to get a dark finish comparable to the super blue. I can get an even finish w/ the ferric but things have to be just right---and, at least it's an easy process to redo if it doesn't work out. Stone washing can be forgiving too it seems and able to turn a pretty good patina into a bonafide finished look depending on how it turns out. It helps a lot to compare knife-making practices with some pros. Still keeping my day job 😊. Beautiful work sir 🤙

Excellent video. I was just at WalMart buying True Oil for my knife scales and the gun bluing was right next to it. I'm just learning so I'm using blades from a kit right now but I really appreciate your sharing of knowledge.

Does just stonewashing add protection from possible rust? I've heard that acid stonewashing is bad and will cause the blade to erode due to the acid. But just stonewashing it without acid will be better and will protect it without the acid.

Any chance you would have a video on making plunge lines like that? I have the straight lines down to a science but having trouble with those since you have to hold the blade at an angle.

When your finished putting the handle on how do you tout how up or continue the stone wash finish down the edge of the tang between the scales. Hope that made sense. Thanks

If you want a longer lasting blue. Blue the knife rinse, then 0000 steel wool and repeat 6 to 8 times. This will add a deeper bluing and last much longer and also protects from rust. I do this then tubble in my homemade tumbler and it comes out awesome.
@gentrycustomknives80082 жыл бұрын
I’ll give that a try 👊👊

I've seen other guys say that if your going to use gun blue on a knife that you can't use it to cut food with it. What is your opinion on this?

I wouldn’t use it much for food prep personally.

@gentrycustomknives80083 жыл бұрын
Yes it helps A lot with that! Still need to keep a light coat of oil on it but it won’t stain like a satin finish would .
