I've been doing like this since I watched this video 2 years ago and it works great. I seen some guys go to 2000 and mirror polish before etch so I tried it. It turned out looking like hog nutsack!!!!! I'm back to this process and I'm not changing again

Is it possible to use the same etching mixture with vg10 stainless damascus steel? With similar results?

Great information. I’ve not been soaking in coffee long as you but I’ll kinda like the grey colors. Alabama Damascus is great to work with

Do you bake your oil or wax on? Or let it set at room temperature?

I just let it sit at room temp for about 24 hours

Great video! Have you made one on how to finish/attach grips once the blade is etched without scratching it? Thanks for the great content!

I have done a few handle install videos! The trick with Damascus blades tho is re etching the spine once the handles are finished! I normally just use a qtip with a little ferric on it.

I need to bring life back to a customer's blade. Will the coffee stain stabilized spalted maple? I sealed it with boiled linseed and beeswax.

Coffee snobs say that life is too short for instant. At least instant coffee has has some benefit. I've heard a lot of knife makers say that only Nescafe brand is useable for etching. Makes me wonder what chemical is in it and what it does to our stomachs.

Thanks for the video! I’m curious about using the apple cider vinegar. What is an advantage to that? I’ve mostly heard of a 4:1 distilled water to FC mixture. Thanks.

I see this is old but I'm sure someone will need it one day. Alabama Damascus doesn't work on the 4:1 distilled as good as this mixture. Alabama Damascus is 5160 and not 1084

I accidentally touched a finished damascus blade on the grinder, and hand sanded the spots, and then re-etched using Nescafe Clasico, and it worked like a charm. A bit of work, but truly worth it to save the blade, if anyone is interested. Sand with rhe grain of the damascus in the blemished spot, so it's surface smoothness matches the rest of the blade, try to even out any peaks or valleys, gently, and then clean it well, and etch it. Like it never happened. 🤷‍♂️ Good thing to know, if you're in a pickle.
