As someone who has recently started their own yoyo journey at the age of 27, i see many similarities between this community as well as the community i've been apart of for years, that being the Fighting Game Community. The level of discipline, self discovery and elation that comes from finally landing a trick you've been practicing for months feels exactly the same with learning a complex combo or doing a "setup". In that moment every time, everything just seems to come together and finding others who share that same passion is a feeling like no other Gentry.

I agree! I came the opposite direction, doing yo-yoing for years but got into SFIV for a while there. I didn't get great or anything but enough to appreciate how interesting it is. I believe Yuuki Spencer was pretty active in the FGC.
@noafore34812 жыл бұрын
@@ShawnFumo I agree, I started playing SFlV when I was younger and I can remember not being able to do something as simple as a hadoken and now I feel the same way when trying to land certain tricks. The process, however is what drives me to keep going because I manage to impress myself whenever I look back on what I've been able to accomplish.

I work at a toy store and we sell yoyo factory yo-yos. I'll have you know kids come in everyday talking about you. I just restarted my yoyo journey, learning some advanced tricks and I'm trying to spread that knowledge to kids as well. I definitely use what you've taught here to teach the younger generation. Every time a kid buys a yoyo factory yoyo I make sure to give them a lesson pertinent to the style of yoyoing they're trying to achieve. I mostly teach them binds and trapeze but I've had kids come back in and teach me tricks. Whatever you're doing is working. Keep it up man!.

I started to yo-yo a month ago in my late 50s and I have advanced in about four weeks to doing the double or nothing smoothly. What I think makes the yo-yo a fascinating thing is not that you can’t do anything else but a number of other things. Historical significance of a yo-yo is almost magical. You cannot overlook the history of it. Then there’s the sense that if you put the work in you will always get rewarded and that sense of continual accomplishment is bar none. To play a yo-yo is also to build yourself in areas of motor ability and mental acuteness, you have to be aware of what you’re doing wrong and make the physical and mental corrections to make the particular trick successful. Taking up the yo-yo was the best thing I did in the last 20 years.

I was very much there in 1998 & 1999. My high school in NYC had everyone playing with yo-yos, and Yomegas were generally the brand of choice. The fad died by summer of '99, but I always kept an appreciation and appetite for it. Still pick up a throw now and then (I like Japanese loopers like Spingears and Something LP, but still appreciate Duncans), and can do a number of classic tricks and some loops. Nothing spectacular, but I'm happy with what I can still do and more. My kids get a kick out of it. It's also a great fidget/stress relief, and a good way to keep ultra-fine motor skills sharp (when not picking up an instrument 😉). Good luck restarting the boom!

I started 2 months ago. What i find is that yoyoing keeps me away from my phone. I wasn't super addicted but nowadays i sometimes don't even know and don't care where my phone is. Also a friend of mine smokes and i join him outside often, yoyoing just increased the joy a lot i have when im going outside with him and keeps me from being tempted to smoke too. Point is, i think in this time period many people would benefit from getting into yoyoing. Society is in need of a trend like this. I'm happy you're doing whatever you can to promote it but i also think people like myself should help and spread the word. Just pass someone a yoyo and the yotricks first 50 trick Playlist and they're bound to get hooked. People like me can do that too

I hope yoyos go big again, I haven't had a yo-yo since 1999 and haven't thought about them once since. My partner asked me what I want for Christmas a few days back and for some reason my brain instantly thought of yoyos, I've since been researching and watching videos and my partner's ordered me a yo-yo factory arrow, can't wait. Think I'm going to order the DNA too because it looks awesome, when I was a child it was so difficult to learn and I got bored doing the same few tricks over and over. If a new boom happens with social media videos available to learn, I can see it being unbelievably big with everyone yo-yoing everywhere

I'm 47 years old and was introduced to YoYo's back in the 80's when there was a boom at the school I was at. I didn't stick with it but I'm back now to learn the basics and hopefully keep an interest. I think an untapped market would be impoverished countries in South America and Africa. YoYo is inexpensive and kids in those countries have a hunger and drive that could seriously breed imagination and innovation. If you can just give them the exposure the rest would be history. They don't have the distractions like video games and Internet like more developed countries do. Either way really love you content and infectious enthusiasm for the sport you love.

I can completely relate to the whole "it was the one thing I was good at" thing. I was not the most athletic kid, was pretty much that quiet kid on the school yard. That was until one day I snuck a Yomega brain yoyo to school and showed my friends some very basic tricks...walking the dog, around the world, and rock the baby. From there, yoyos took off. It was kind of cool because I pretty much started the craze at school when my small circle of friends began to learn how to make a yoyo sleep. This was in the year 1997, just before the boom really took off.

I'm a 90s kid so remember the craze well. Earlier this year I got myself a cheap yoyo on a whim and took to KZbin to improve on the basics I knew before buying an unresponsive. Here in the UK it doesn't seem as popular but I have started to throw while in public, personally I havent seen anyone with a yoyo since being kid and being in my 30s some may think I'm strange but I'm building on my character. The analogy about leveling up in video games vs real life is 100% correct the sense of achievement from landing and getting consistent with new tricks definitely builds confidence. Good luck with your mission.

Mate I’m exactly the same, 35 years old and the mrs got me a cheap yo-yo from Morrisons as a joke xmas present. 7 months later I now have 7 different yo-yos and am hooked on it! I’m still crap but I try to learn something new each week, not good enough to throw in public though! Tried to get some of my mates into it but it was a hard sell. Most people let their age dictate social expectations and won't enjoy something even if they want to so I understand what you mean saying it was a hard sell. @@craigseeney3355 no not at all she thinks it’s kind of funny, I need to be occupied so I think she’s glad it’s something like this and not something financially crippling or dangerous (had a motorbike obsession a few years ago but had to get rid due to space needed at home) I don’t really have a main, but of the ones I do have I love my Yomega Maverick the most, it’s not the best by any means but was the first metal one I bought and I have somehow bonded with it! Other than that I have two Luftverk plastics, the Fulvia and the 000 which really perform and I have a yo-yo palace code which is probably the best of the bunch in terms of playability. I can’t DNA, haven’t really tried it yet I’m kind of working through string tricks and trying to get better at catching etc so that I never miss. It’s slow going but fun! I do find that if I learn a new trick I can tend to unlearn a previous one! Somewhere in the maelstrom of catches and string hops the muscle memory takes over and the theory is lost, so if I learn a new trick I have been forgetting the old ones! Frustrating but a fascinating insight into memory and how we learn things. I think its made me realise I am a lazy learner, which explains a lot and is something I am working on improving. The power of the yo-yo huh! Who knew!

It's funny, I was into yo-yo when the hyper yoyo boom happened. I tried getting into yo-yo when I was young and I liked playing with my old Duncan yo-yo (was a 2a style responsive yoyo). At the time I remember seeing a lot of people playing with H style yo-yos, doing all sorts of crazy string tricks and I wanted to do them as well. One summer I almost convinced my father to get me a butterfly yo-yo but it didn't work out. Fast forward to about 5 years ago and I just decided to randomly pick up a yo-yo one day. Now I play with my yo-yos in my spare time (I really like 4a) and I quite enjoy it. I do kind of wonder if I had gotten one of those butterfly yo-yos would I have become better at yo-yo when I was younger or wouldn't have just been another phase.

@@Gentrystein thanks mate, glad you enjoyed the story. Been getting my nieces and nephews into yoyo and your videos are invaluable for that (since I'm not nearly as good as you). Keep it going; I really hope to see a new yoyo boom soon.
