I think this is an interesting interpretation of Yars. I like the Yars like shooter bits. For reference I'm 45 so grew up playing Revenge on 2600 and in my local bowling alley arcade (had older brothers thankfully so kind of born with a joystick in my hand).

And you nailed it. This isn't even really an interpretation of the VCS classic, but an entirely new game and story set in the same universe. How that all pans out and expands the lore remains to be seen, but I'm interested enough now that I'll be playing the full game at release.

I'm cool with this! I like WayForward's stuff usually, the references in the minigames are cute, it seems competently put together. Stuff like this is fine to hook in a new audience who maybe wouldn't give a classic game a look. And for those who want something more true to classic Yars gameplay with a modern spin - Yars Reloaded still exists and is really good!

I just downloaded and played through that demo. I did enjoy it more than I thought I would. It also ran surprising well on this fairly ancient gaming rig with an AMD RX-480 GPU card, AMD FX-8350 CPU, 24 gigs of RAM, and a smallish 480 gig SATA SSD (not even NVME). I tried playing with the keyboard, but did not really like the controls. I grabbed a controller from my Play Station 5 and that worked really well. Even the rumble feature worked! You definitely want to play this game with a controller if you can. I've heard better voice acting elsewhere, but still thought it was fun enough. Now, that soundtrack. Ugh - wish I could change it. I dug around in the folder where the actual game was installed and see if I could find where the music files are stored and change the music to something more my liking, but alas, no success. When the full game comes out, I will more than likely grab it.

@@GenXGrownUp I agree with the background music not needing vocals. Also, on a more personal taste, I would rather change it to something more my liking like old school heavy metal, and not that bubblegum pop sounding music they have. With that said, there was ONE game where I did not mind the vocals in the soundtrack, and that was Brutal Legend on my PS/3. That game had the sickest soundtrack that I could recall! While playing the demo, I did set it where the soundtrack was just barely audible, and turned the SFX up a little higher. Also, during your play through, you missed a door that would've gave you another 30 points of health (making it max out at 130). It was right there in that section right before you went to the left in that section to get the Trion Nibbler power up. BTW, love your channel, from another GenXGrownUp (54).

The problem with this is it could have been called "Haunted House 2077" and it would still have the same relevance. I have no doubt WF will deliver a great game - I just wish a Yars one would have been something more related to the original story, mini comic and artwork.

Looks good to me. I get that not everyone who enjoyed the original is into Metroidvanias. And I get that even for people who are, the artistic choices (designs, tone, story) aren't going to sit well with some. That's cool. But I'm in.

Its official, wayforward can cook amazingly except with 3d games (for the record this seems fine enough but the idea of making plot driven spinoffs to old-school hi-score games is always goofy)

The voice acting and the quippy dialogue is a little meh, but overall it seems fun. I want to see Atari experiment more with their core franchises like this. Like how Namco & Tetris handle their IPs. For example, you can still still a game more faithful to the original arcade title, like Pac-Man Championship Edition DX, and have something completely different like Pac-Man World. Tetris would be pretty stale if they didn't experiment with games like Tetris 99, Tetris Effect, Puyo Puyo Tetris, etc.

I have been enjoying the Atari Recharged on my Steam Deck. Yars is a favorite! ...If not a SQL is it a unauthroize Fan Extension? Hey, for fun I added a NVME to my Atari VCS, did not work, added the proper SATA M.2 it was recognized. I could not get steamOS installed , or mint, but POP-OS did great. ummm at 6 minutes ... too much plot ... too much plot .. where is the game.

I.... hate.... this...... anime... junk..... The whole look, feel, and writing seem to be made to trigger me. This has NOTHING to do with the original game we all love. They just made a cheap, anime exploration RPG thing and slapped "Yars" on it because they know it's a nostalgic thing. This would be like slapping the name Star Wars on the movie, Krull!
