My mom is friends with a whole murder of crows. She started to feed them, and now they recognize her, and even her car. She can tell them apart, and they have taught their young that my mom is OK to be around. It's just spectacular to see how they all swarm around her when she comes to feed just one or two.

My parents have had a garden full of regularly visiting jackdaws, two crows, a magpie and many smaller birds. I remember growing up we used to "raise" some chicks that fell down a chimney somewhere, until they were independent enough to meet and hook up with their kin. They keep checking in from time to time. Birds are awesome creatures and we humans should take more time to appreciate their world and learn to love like them.

Crows and ravens are extremely intelligent birds. Scientists have pegged them at 7-8 human years in intelligence. They mate for life, use tools, have a sense of right and wrong, have mourning rituals, etc. Beautiful what you're doing for those precious animals. God bless and love from Canada!

No, not all birds. In general, birds that have males and females that look the same are much more likely to be monogamous. And cheating is quite common in some species that form pairs. But I agree that wildlife is amazing to witness. Ravens are among my favourites.

I live in the Netherlands. Here the people make stone gardens where nothing can live and the build their houses in a way no bird or insect can nest there. Whole parts of towns are lifeless. It's spooky to be there. I'm so affrais this is the furture of this world.

I know you mean well, but bread is dangerous to birds and will eventually even kill them because it fills their stomachs but doesn't give them any of the nutrition they need to survive. And young birds especially will be unable to fly if raised on bread, because their feathers will not develop properly due to malnutrition. There are other things you can feed birds that are healthy for them and still completely affordable: nuts, seeds, grains, veggies, mealworms... Please look into this matter, as I'm sure you don't want to unintentionally harm your bird friends

@@Yoarashi No I don't feed my birds that, they scavenge off food in dumpsters & parking lot garbage cans - who knows what's in there. Nuts aren't affordable and neither are many vegies when you have a small horde of parking lot birds including seagulls. I get wheat bread that's fortified w/ nutrients/grain. I understand and know you mean well but the best I can do is get some seeds but the bigger birds will need ALOT of it and don't eat it much.

I like to joke that I was “adopted” by a parrot when I was 3. This poor bird had lost her younglings and was really depressed until she met me and decided she was gonna “raise” me. Since I only visited that state twice a year we feared that she wouldn’t recognize me, but every time she knew who I was until she passed away two years ago. It was such a humbling experience growing up with her in my life and I feel truly honored that she chose me to take care. Nature is really amazing and I wish more people got to see just how espetacular life truly is. Animals are extremely smart and just as sentimental as any human, they love, learn and mourn and is a life changing experience to witness how especial they are

Every creature has benefits to offer; we have to understand and remember that. So many people don't like them, but vultures can get pretty big and impressive. The county roads down the way from the house, there are quite a few of these, sometimes you'll see a tree with 10-12 sitting in it. Lots of small animals don't make it across the road, but they are never far off from tending to that.

@@sambur6480 it is not. roosters are very kind to their hens. they will scratch the ground when they find food and allow for the hens to eat first. he will only eat after they have had their fill. roosters protect their hens with care and vigilance, they care for their wives. while it is true that there are plenty of dominance behaviours seen in chickens with the pecking order, roosters bowing their heads and sharing food is not one of them

I’m in Australia and have a magpie family that have been visiting me for the last few years.Bruno and Bella brought their son Bocelli to meet me last year and he now visits me too and just a few days ago they brought their twins Barney and Bonnie to visit me as well.Being chosen by birds as their human connection is the biggest compliment ever.They left their son Bobo(Bocelli)with me last year for an hour while they went and did whatever magpies do...that is a HUGE amount of trust they showed me.Magpies are very protective of their young and the fact that they left him with me in that time absolutely blew me away and melted my heart.They are my family now and I hope I’m theirs ❤️❤️❤️

I have a pair of crows in my yard. They just recently showed up. I have a couple of squirrels that will get my attention by jumping up to the window or tapping on the door. All the birds and squirrels share a feeding area. Even a neighbor cat shares the kiddie pool. I love watching the critters. This is an awesome video. Take a summer and turn your back yard into an animal friendly place. They will come. The first covid lock down summer i spend most of my days and nights in my back yard. Kept me sane too. I already had a bond with a couple of squirrels. i have vids of on my channel. My one fav squirrel we have even saved the life of a couple of her babies. One from drowning in a neighbours rain barrel( People please put mesh or something over your open water sources or rain barrels) And one tiny male just old enough to explore from the nest and we were hit with a freak ice storm. We found Boos nest destroyed and she was trying to stuff her 6 babies in a bird house. We found 2 on the ground we thought were dead. Boo showed my daughter and i, her one male baby. We scooped them up and took them into the house to do cpr and we managed to save the male. It took him 6 hours to recover. He was on his last moments and the tiny girl was already gone. We were surprised he made such a remarkable recovery. The reunion was something to see. And sadly i recorded none of it. He stuck around the rest of the year and grew to be one of the biggest males. We named him lil peep, as that was the sound he made when he started to come around and breath on his own. Then one night i was visited by a raccoon, she spent the whole summer visiting me. She came for dinner and stayed to play for hours. We played with a soccer ball (they treat a ball like a cat on their back) We played tug, she would fish for snacks from the dog pool. Then i also had 7 baby skunks, who came for their treat every night and walked all around me and allowed me to pet their tail as they walked past me. My raccoon friend fell in love with one of the babies and would hold her down and hug and pet her and groom her. The skunks never tried to spray. My raccoon Dita, was not fond of the 2 possums that would show up at times though, she even sat on my lap to be away from them. I several times had to shoo her out of my house. I would go in the get something and she got the screen open and i would find her wandering around my Livingroom. She did not want to leave. lol I had tons of vids i have not uploaded yet, as in a way they make me sad. The weather started to get colder and i could not sit out side, but still put ditas dinner out for her, one day she just stopped coming and i never saw her again. That is the down side of bonding with wild animals. Then my ravens who help keep the hawk away from the birds i feed. There is one, not sure if its male or female, but he lost his mate the winter before and would come for the cat kibble i set out on top of the fence.He left me a gift the first time. Just a small round rock but i cherish it. And there is a family of 4 others who come every morn. I do not know why but when i look out and see them it give me a safe feeling. Some look at them and feel foreboding or the are a bad omen. I call them my sentinels.

I can SO relate to all of this. We've become close friends with a crow couple who come to our backyard every day, and bring their young in the summer. We feed them every afternoon, and they come when we call them. They peer in our window. They defend us from intruders. They play peekaboo with us. They look right into our eyes. They sit on our balcony with us. And they love each other just as much as James and Margaret do. I cannot believe how amazing corvids are. I'm so glad to know them.

Not a good idea to feed them! You may be feeding them inappropriate foods to attract them, but it doesn't take long for the young in particular to develop structural problems which permanently cripples them. Secondly, you shouldnt be teaching them to lose their natural fear of people, you should keep your distance and can still appreciate them, as this lady does. Water and places to,hide from predators will bring everything in. You can get good ideas on how to create a nice safe habitat that will bring them in, from Cornell University Ornithology, online. :) Provide water. All living creatures need water, and you'll attract everything that lives near you. . But please, don't feed food to crows. It could attract undesirable elements, It could get them killed if they lose their natural fear of people, when they become pests. You don't have the appropriate foods they eat, anyway. Put out water, make sure you keep it clean, and sit back and watch. That's all you need.

@@MarySanchez-qk3hp I've carefully researched all the things you mention here. Crows are scavengers who often live near humans and thrive as scavengers of human food. But I never feed them unhealthy foods, regardless. I feed them only what is appropriate for crows. I keep my distance by placing food at a special location, then stepping back. I also always provide them with water. As for becoming to habituated to humans, crows are smart and recognize individual humans, learning who is and who is not safe. They then pass this information on to their young. Just because they trust me, does not mean that they then trust all humans. They do not. Much of what you say here does indeed apply to *other* wildlife, but not to crows.

@@CharlotteIssyvoo You are right about them recognizing humans! My ex husband got a crow mad at him. Soon enough, all the crows in our area would make a ruckus whenever he was outside. I thought they didn’t like us. But then I went outside without him and they didn’t act that way towards me alone. Also, his car got “bombed” regularly. Mine, parked right next to his, didn’t get nearly as much. Yep, those crows recognized him and also his car! ✌🏼💖

People used to do a lot of stuff they can't do any more, including keeping corvids like crows as pets. They're Federally protected in the United States, it is now illegal to keep them without permits. And none of the specific permits allow for keeping crows as pets. The permits are for specific special purposes such as rehabilitation, transport, falconry, zoos, scientific research. I hope, if you're in the US, that this happened long, long ago. You wouldn't get permission nowadays. We know more now.

There once was a man that enjoyed watching the black Raven's fly around, play, squawk, and chatter. He enjoyed them so much he would climb trees just to be closer to them. For many months the Ravens ignored the man, but after awhile, one of the Ravens flew from a nearby tree and landed directly next to the man. In utter amazement, the bird spoke to the man and asked, "You have been watching us for a long time. You have tried to get close to us. Why do you do this?" The man replied, "I mean no harm. I have become enchanted with you and all your relatives. I enjoy the play, the squawking, and I wish I could learn your language so I could understand more about you." Then the Raven responded, "We are honored that you want to know us, as long as you do not cause harm, we will teach you our language." For many months the Ravens taught the man all about the language and how the Ravens lived from day to day. The man became so educated that he knew everything there was to know about the Ravens. Many of the Ravens saw the man and accepted him as a friend. One day, an older Raven was flying far over the man, dropped a walnut perfectly on the man's head. It was done on purpose and all the Ravens almost fell off their branches laughing so hard the way they do. One Raven was flying and was laughing so hard he had to crash land right in front of the man. The man was feeling bad and was hurt by being made fun of, so he asked the Raven in front of him, "Why are you all picking on me." The Raven stopped laughing and became very serious. "We thought you understood us, but apparently you don't. If you did you would know that we are not mocking you... well maybe a bit, but it is done in our way of having fun. We are 'playing' with you and that is all. It is not to be taken seriously. You should know us better." The man took sometime to understand this and over time a few more practical jokes were played on the man and he in turn pulled a few "good ones" on the birds. A good time was had by all and the man became even closer to the Ravens. Then another event occurred. A young Raven swooped out of the sky and pecked the man on the head. Then another young Raven swooped down and did the same thing. The man ran across the field and into the woods but the Ravens kept chasing him and very skillfully they flew at high speeds through the woods tormenting the man. Finally the two stopped and started to yell mean words, fighting words at the man. Again the man did not understand, but he knew the two Ravens were very mad at him, so he decided to leave and let the Ravens be. The man went away for many months. As he did his duties in the his tribal village, he told all the people about his adventures and what he learned about the Ravens. Some listened with intent, others just thought the man was a fool to study the Ravens so. The villagers gave the man a new name of "Black Feather" because of his close relationship to the birds, but the man objected and said, "I am no longer close to the Raven people." From above there was a squawking sound of a single Raven. Some of the people looked up and were surprised that they could understand the Raven, others just looked around because they could hear nothing but squawking. The Raven was speaking to the man and said, "It is true, you are closer to us than any Anishinabe (Human) has ever come. You are close, but you still don't understand us fully. I invite you to return to us, many miss you." Black Feather started to follow the Raven but then stopped at the edge of the village. He looked around to make sure no other Anishinabe could hear then asked the Raven, "why do you ask me back when the two Ravens where fighting with me and were mean." "The Raven landed at Black Feathers feet and said, "See how little you understand us. The two young Ravens did not fight with you because you are Anishinabe, it is because they accepted you as a member of the Raven people. You should know that we fight among ourselves too. It is a part of our way of life. Instead of sulking and leaving you should have fought back." Black Feather stood in silence and said, "There is much about Ravens I don't understand. Maybe we are too different people to ever understand each other. I should stop and return to my people in the village." The Raven again shook his head and told Black Feather, "That is your choice, but again I tell you that you have come closer to us Raven people than any other Anishinabe. Would you throw this all away just because you can't understand us yet?" Black Feather responded, "It's useless, how can I ever understand you, I can't even fly!" A thousand bursts of laughter was heard from all the surrounding trees and Black Feather knew that all the Raven People were there, hiding and listening. "Of course you can't fly. You are Anishinabe and we are Ravens. But we accept you as one of us. We play with you. We fight with you. We love you and want you back. We also recommend you don't try to fly in order to be like us, because then, you would not be Anishinabe nor a Raven but something else. We like you as an Anishinabe that understands us as Ravens. Join us or not the decision is yours." Black Feather returned to the Anishinabe village and bid everyone farewell because he had decided to live with the Raven people. After all the farewells and such he started to leave the village. All the Anishinabe people were there to see him off, and high over head was a thousand Raven's. Then from high above one of the older Ravens dropped a walnut shell and again with remarkable aim, plunked Black Feather right on the head. All the Ravens started laughing hard and all the Anishinabe were laughing too. Black Feather laughed and looked up at the old Raven and said, "Good one." -Charles Phillip Whitedog

There are ravens in eastern US, mostly northeastern but you can spot them as far South as north Georgia. Crows are very intelligent birds too, and I see groups of them frequently here in the Southeast. They all fly in a group and land together in my yard sometimes. They are fascinating! They walk around, clearly looking at the ground for certain bugs, I guess. They look like little old men in black suits, lol. You can just see their intelligence as they walk around, carefully examining things.

Once i had a bird feeder where 2 cow birds came daily, a male and a female .the female would squawk and fuss at him until he fed her. After a half a minute or so she would settle down and eat on her own....he would take a break by flying away to a nearby tree. After a few seconds he would come back and feed her again

@JoanneMurdock that's lovely, but don't make them too reliant on your mincemeat offerings. I know of friends who did this and after several generations of feeding the growing flock of magpies, chicks started showing up with physical deformities. Over several years, because the birds were not finding enough of their own (nutritionally balanced) food, they developed, for example, calcium deficiencies that started showing up across the whole flock. They have since been weaned from their reliance on human-grade mince meat and can hopefully start to recover. They still hang around and the interaction is wonderful. They recognise the neighbours living on the street, and hop around warbling at visitors.

Anyone lucky enough to have any of the Corvus genus birds accepting them as a friend is definitely blessed. Thanks for this beautiful video! I feed crows and ravens every day and I'm blessed to interact with a flock of 20 to 40 of them. I buy them good quality cat food (higher in protein than dog food) roasted peanuts in the shell with no salt and a nice mix of seed with meal worms in it. I give them their food in a parking lot that is close by. Every morning they are waiting for me. I love it!
