Awwww.... to get a dog to 17 years is testament to how great a life he has had with you. I had a dog with dementia, it's not easy, but we kept doing normal things right up to the end. Bless wee Piper. 😊

We are doing the same with our Ruby. We keep her routine as active and similar to her known life as we can. She has become food obsessed. Which is quite a challenge. She will be 17 in April. We rescued her when she was 3 years old.

you can really gauge how much love people have in their heart by how they treat the most vunerable creatures in their life. if this man has this much fondness for his dog, could you imagine how he would treat his wife if she suffered a disease? how he would support his kids in hard times? what a good man.

Sadly, all the diseases that can affect humans can affect dogs and even other animals. We're not different in this thing. We're one with the nature. They can even be born with things we clasify as autism or adhd. The same goes even for sexual orientations. We're all the same in this, the only thing is there are billions of us and we can easily communicate, so it might seem we're the only ones experiencing this.

@@SimketsCorrect, other animals suffer things like cancer and Dementia. Even distant species like Dinosaurs have fossil records with Cancer. The majority of animals we interact with daily evolved from a single template that has been the basis of what time has built upon. That core template is responsible for both the good and bad genetics we have as far as illnesses are concerned.

@@roboticunclephil it’s not about “deserving”, it just _is_ … nature isn’t some justice system that condemns the good and the bad. It’s truly indiscriminate and, by extension, the most pure thing that exists. Piper has lived a wonderful life and it’s an honor he ever got to exist. The chances of being born are so laughably low, it is a miracle he ever got the chance to, well, be Piper. It is a a miracle, and likely pure luck, we have gotten the chance to be ourselves as well. To have gotten the chance to breathe, eat, laugh, love, cry- to be actually _something._ Keep living life to the fullest, we’ve only got one. Piper’s own life is about to end soon, yet he is still a happy, loving dog

Awwww, sweet baby..getting old is no fun at all! I had a little dog who developed dementia when she was 17. She would stand in a corner and then whimper because she didn't realize all she had to do was back up a little and turn around. Daisy did have moments of lucidity and she would get around just fine. She even ran down the last part of the street on the way home after her walk because she knew it was close by. One day, Daisy simply collapsed in a heap on the livingroom floor. I called a friend who worked at the local vet clinic and she came out right away. Daisy was already unconscious and after two injections had drifted peacefully away. I have her ashes upstairs.

I hate when they get old ... it's the absolute WORST part of having pets, because you put so much time and love into them, and they give you so much love and good memories in return. We had a little toy poodle we got at two years old from a bad home situation. Two was the estimate, he could have been older for all we knew. He lived until he was at least fourteen and had gone blind and deaf, then started having some breathing troubles and just was not living his best life anymore. He had also stopped barking/making noise entirely, which was so hard to see. Once, the summer before he died, he had managed to wander under the open recliner of our couch and couldn't figure his way out, poor boy! The recliner got shut with nobody the wiser. We quickly realized he was missing, and looked all over for him for nearly an hour, in and outside the house. We were terrified because we live near woods, and he'd actually fallen off a path up there innto some bushes recently. I finally had the idea to check the couch, and sure enough there he was, unharmed, just sitting in the little hollow covered by the recliner! He was little, so just fit right in there. He was our first poodle, and we loved and still love that little dog. He's why we got big poodles, and are crazy poodle people now. He saw me through my junior and senior years of high school, college ... more college ... a great loss ... I wouldn't trade the twelve years we had with him for anything though.

Bless you for surrounding Piper with your loving care. So loyal. My Senior Beagle also lost, first, his vision, then, his hearing, then his sense of smell. There were so many health problems which he and I handled with patience and strength. He was a strong, beautiful boy, just like your Piper. Dogs are amazing and resilient. Eventually, the dementia increased. Increasingly fast circling. He made it to 15 1/2 years old. He was well-loved as is Piper. Senior dogs are amazing, aren’t they?

That's exactly what happened to ours. He had a series of strokes in the last two years of his life, the first and last being the worst. I often wonder if we shouldn't have tried so hard to bring him back after the first, as he'd stopped eating, because he was never the same after that and after each stroke he lost more and more ability to function. We made a lot of modifications such as ramps and a food bowl that was up on a pedestal so he didn't have to out his head right down, because he would lose his balance when he did that, but then he lost his sight, hearing and smell as well as his balance. By the end, he knew no one and was fearful of everything and when another stroke robbed him of what little he had left and he was clearly suffering, with no quality of life, we had to have him put down. He reached 17.5 years old.

My childhood dog, a 20 year old Chihuahua, suffered from dementia the last year or two of her life. For me, it was almost a blessing in disguise because she slowly forgot me and gravitated towards my mom who cared for her when I was a kid. I had time to grieve, but my mother is still processing her loss 3 1/2 years later. We love and miss you greatly Emmy. ❤

My little man, who is almost 16, is going through this exact same thing right now. He also is having issues with going outside to do his business, so he wears belly bands now. He was a puppy mill rescue, then adopted and abused. I fostered then adopted him when he was six. I love my sweet little guy. As long as he isn’t suffering we will adapt to his his needs. I also have a 15 year old who now has bladder cancer and terrible arthritis, but right now she seems comfortable and happy. These guys give you all their love and ask so little in return. It is my honor to care for them when they most need it.

Our chi-rat terrier mix is upon his first senior year on Dec 24th (7 years old) he has ALWAYS had to wear belly bands. We believe he was neutered too early which threw off his bladder or something in that area. So I get how it feels having to have your pet wear wee wees. (As we call them)

Thank you for being Piper's dad. We had to let our Keno go two months ago. He died completely unexpectedly within half an hour of a seizure from which the vet could not save him. He also suffered from dementia in the end, was deaf and almost blind. but he made us realize in every second how much he liked to be with us and how much he loved us. i hope that he also knew that from us. we got him from the shelter when he was 2 years old. he died on august 3rd, he would have celebrated his 20th birthday shortly.

I had a chihuahua that lived to 20+ years. He too developed dementia. It started with him getting “stuck” in corners, forgetting to turn around and go back. That progressed to him walking in circles. As long as their appetite stays good they continue on until an infection, virus, etc. overcomes them. Be comforted by the fact that you guided and cared for him well enough for him to reach that ripe old age when there was finally no gas left is his tank. You’re a wonderful parent.

I can totally relate to your experience. We rescued our Phoebe 13 years ago at 4years old. She too is going through doggie dementia. She has lost most of her teeth, has gone deaf and her vision is almost gone. She wanders around confused and sometimes just sits and stares. And then, there are the times she acts frisky, like a pup, jumping up and down. We have had a wonderful life with her.

Such a wonderful story. It is heartbreaking and wonderful all at once. My little girl, Coco, a black and tan Chihuahua was 18 in August. She remained my "puppy" and love of my life until she passed recently. I'm 80 and miss her terribly. I was so blessed to have her adopt me when she was 5. What a lovely story, and thank you for sharing it. ❤ We had a spaniel called Sam, who lived to be almost 18 years old. He went blind at the end, but the most unlikely rescuer came to his aid. We adopted a kitten called Roo, who decided Sam was her mum; she slept with him, sucking the hair on his ear and kneading him to snuggle in and never left his side for even a moment. When Sam wanted to move around the house, Roo would walk right in front, waving her tail across his nose to guide him, stopping and starting for him to keep up. When Sam died, Roo sat on his grave for a day and a night, crying, and even when she left, she would often go back and sit on the grave for hours. Of course, animals don't have feelings do they? 🙄

Theres a heartbreaking video of a german shepherd refusing to leave the freshly buried grave of his owner. He was doing that lay down so you have to drag me move dogs use. Only he was crying, loudly crying, and anytime somebody moved him he SCREECHED and ran right back to the fresh dirt. He did all but try to dig her back up. And probably would have, given the proper chance.
