@intriguing Woman Didn't you listen to the video? He had an injured paw and can't survive in the wild any longer. That's why she ultimately let him stay in the house. I went through the same process with a squirrel, Chippy, about 25 years ago ago... trying to convince him he should be a wild squirrel. He eventually stayed away longer and longer until I didn't see him anymore.... at least to know it was him. 😔 He was such a sweet little guy and so much fun! I would willingly have kept him with me but I knew that would be doing him a disservice. We luckily lived on with 1 1/2 acres of wild, untouched woods for him to learn to roam in with the wild squirrels. One time, when we were trying to release him, he had been gone for a couple days and my younger brother went to walk down the road with a friend to his house. They heard rustling in the leaves behind them and then Chippy ran up and scurried up my brother's leg to his shoulder. He used to run back and forth from our front door to the back door waiting for someone to come out that he could pounce on! ☺ Then he would come in for a couple days before the next attempt to "re-wild" him. Lol 😂 The last time I saw him to know it was Chippy, he almost jumped on me from the shelf we had put on "his" tree, but changed his mind and ran up the tree and disappeared. 🐿

How did you get to that point with them? I have squirrels and chipmunks in my yard I would love to be able to become friends with them!
@TheCatWrangler2 жыл бұрын
hi, animal behaviorist here! ☺ when you give them treats, that's positive reinforcement. You want to teach them that your presence means food and safety. Google the best treats to use door each species. Put the treats out in a spot near them, and then sit in the yard... but far away from them. Then every day you put the food out and sit a little bit closer for half an hour or so. Until one day they come straight up to you, and eventually they will take it right from your hands. The key is patience and learning what works as you go through the process. I also recommend not staring at them directly at first. use a soft expression, close your eyes, or meditate or pretend to sleep. This will make them less nervous. Every day they will trust you a bit more! Repetition and positive reinforcement are the most powerful tools we have with animals. You got this! Good luck! Ps. I try to not over feed them, so that they don't become completely dependant on my resources lol. That way they still could survive without my food, but its just a fun treat. 😁

Maybe you don’t like the phrase having evolved to cover anything other than black people, that’s fair and I can understand why someone might feel that way, but don’t insert malicious and consciously racist intent where there isn’t any. If you have strong opinions about the use of “___ lives matter” outside of the original BLM phrase then yes you’re free to express to someone why you feel they shouldn’t say it in the future, but just accusing them of intentional racism isn’t an effective way to have that conversation.

I had many animals like this when I was young. my favorite was a skunk. such funny animals. another was a barn owl that I found on a railroad track late at night that I think was hit by a train maybe. his wing was broken. I took him home and he lived in my bathroom. I left the window open, and he spent a lot of time on the windowsill but didn't leave for about 4 months. he was so gentle and would hop down and sit on the edge of the sink while I was brushing my teeth, to drink the water from the tap. we fed him raw meat. one day I woke up and he was gone. it was time for him to leave I suppose. I left the window open for a while, but he never came back. I didn't even know we had barn owls in Louisiana and got to see him start changing into his summer phase colors. anyway, it's good to know there are more gentle people out there. lovely story.

Thank you for your willingness to open your heart & your home to such a special being. ❤ Love to you both, Betsy

I've had the privilege of rescuing a baby squirrel. It was an amazing experience. He was my buddy. The level of interaction and intelligence is really captivating. First few times I tried to let him go he would fake an injury and lay on my back deck with his belly showing. As soon as I opened the door he would spring back to life and would happily climb up on my shoulder. Thankfully I was able to reintroduce him successfully. It took a lot of time and reassurance for him but he lived happily in my back yard for many years. I knew it was him because he would approach and sit closer to me than any of the other squirrels. Occasionally he would jump up onto my table and would happily eat with the family. Miss that little guy.

@@ProtoPunk - you're looking at it from an entirely different angle. God has blessed humans with intelligence to fight diseases and to research them so that we could live a long and full life. No other animal on Earth can do that. Diseases are not just confined to humans. If an animal gets a disease there is nothing they can do about it. In that respect you should be thanking God. The animals don't have emergency rooms, or medicines to help with the pain and the suffering. God has given us the ability to make great advancements in medicine to help deal with human suffering. It's unfair to single out a gift that God bestowed on someone simply because you feel like you've been short changed. You're not the only one that has to deal with human grief. But it's wrong to blame God.

We didn't understand how it got way out there but we climbed the tree and got it and brought it back to our house. It was very hungry and thirsty. It stayed in the house for quite awhile but as it grew we realized it wasn't a normal cat. It got pretty big and had a lot of hair coming out of its ears, we think it was a lynx or something. It started going out into the woods at night and coming back in the day to eat and sleep. One night it went out and never came back. It was a pretty awesome animal, whatever it was.

She has built a drey in my neighbours tree and comes down every day for breakfast burying her nuts in the garden, and if we're out there, in our clothes! She adjusted to being wild with amazing ease, considering she was a house-squirrel for the first year of her life until we put her aviary up. Now she's free to roam but hasn't gone far! One time I was driving late at night through the Tuscan countryside on a rather narrow, pitch black road and this porcupine just appeared out of nowhere in the middle of the road. Squirrels are extremely intelligent. I cry every single time I see one dead on or by the roadside. It's truly heartbreaking to see any of God's creatures runover and not checked on because there's always a chance of it just being injured and cared for to full health. And if not, care for that lost life being carried off the road. It really makes me ask God, "Why, just why?" Many humans have little to no empathy and sympathy. I mean, if one were to witness another human being struck by a moving vehicle, the immediate thing to do would be to call 911. Why not have the same care for nature? Offered freely... But she is still depriving him if choosing his life every day: does she take him out? Does he roam free if he wants? She thinks it's ok to have netting "and he can interact with other squirrels"... He lives in a glorified cage, and has become her substitute for a baby... She tries to rehabilitate him to wild a few times (or was it just once???) and then says oh well no we are meant to be together! Why not go out with him, with a harness at first if she feels safer, and allow him to experi nice what REAL LIFE is like... Not just running round and round a room full of bits of wood, however lovingly she has made it, or well meaning. Would give her opportunity to go hiking, walking: good for her health as well... She could get a cat flap with a chip so HE has the choice to be in or out... He deserves other furry companionship I pray she reads this and acta on it soon.
