In Calgary, quite a few small businesses that could leave doors open and would feed the squirrels. One had squirrels that would come in the front door and zip down the hallway to get to the (also open) back door where their food was put out for them. I also lived on the 11th floor of an apartment building and the squirrels could climb up the outside stucco wall to my balcony. I started leaving food out for them, too!

Well if you lived in Florida I'd be more than happy to give you a vacation! I had a rescue squirrel for 8 months and released him back into the wild. His choice and mine. I loved him but I never planned to keep him. The look on his face when he climbed up a huge oak tree was priceless. What a trip they are! I have a lot of my house to repair from chewing, but I'd do it again in a heartbeat. 🤗 Just FYI, squirrels are not as soft and furry as you think they are. They have a little bit of bristle to them, but not much. My little Scruffy eventually ran from around 6:00 in the morning for about an hour around my bedroom and would jump on my chest and keep going. When he got tired he'd lay down next to me spread out so he could scratchies. 🤗 I was happy I started feeding him outside plants, which he LOVED, about a month before he was released. I'm confident he's ok.

@@stardust949 a few years ago i renovated our home, there were two ten foot section of walls open and a couple of doors left off, i planted a couple of trees in the lounge which now has a fourteen foot [clear sheeting] roof. we have two ponds in the lounge also.3 species of frogs moved in to the ponds and its nice to hear them calling to each other. we have a bird feeder in the lounge and when the weather is bad we have four species of honeyeaters coming and going throughout the day, finches and native pigeons also come in for a feed. also snakes and lizards and possums. the only down side is mosqitos in the warmer months fortunately just a few. i don't think i could cope with living in a ''normal'' house again. most people are so removed from nature in todays world, most wouldn't care if we cause the extinction of most of the wildlife on the planet...

I love stories like this and hope they can educate us to take care of and be kind to our acrobatic furry friends.
@joannenugent84952 жыл бұрын
I agree with you Steven. Its a shame as grey squirrels - I am in the UK - can't be released into the wild if caught or treated by a vet so would have to be put down as not native even though they have been here for many many years. Been a while since I've been up to the park so that reminds me need to go back with some nuts for them.

These babies are so cute. My dad, years ago, rescued a baby squirrel that was drowning at the curb after a bad storm. Chippie 💓 mom and dad but would attach anyone else that entered the house. No need for a burglar alarm. LOL Dad would take her to the park to play with the other squirrels and when she had enough she would crawl up dad's leg to his shoulder for the ride home. Chippie ruled. Chippie also chewed on every piece of wood in the house. No mistaken it was her by the marks she made with those front teeth. FYI -You might want to check out these two books about a man and his squirrel. A Squirrel of One's Own & A Squirrel Forever by Douglas Fairbairn Thanks for your post. It brought back fond memories. I know exactly how you feel. I feed the squirrels in my backyard twice a day every day. I have even gone out of my way to buy peanuts when the local grocery store is out of peanuts. I made a small playground / sanctuary for them. I have a lawn chair out back so I can work remotely while spending time with the squirrels. They make me laugh every day. They are all used to me. None of them run away anymore. There is at least one squirrel who will scratch on the back door if all the peanuts are gone. Lol. I open the door and the squirrel is standing there expecting peanuts. Lol. So I put out 4 handfuls of peanuts.
