He’s a master of storytelling songs. I LOVE that he covers songs from this generation. They are timeless and his voice is so perfect for them.

"Big Iron" refers to the six shooter that the Ranger carried. This is a Marty Robbins classic....... on the same album as El Paso and Cool Water I think. Absolutely classic country!

For those who don't understand, Big Iron is the size of the six shooter the Ranger used, Cleared Leather means the outlaw hadn't been able to draw his revolver from his holster so he could fire it. The notches on his gun (20) represent the number of men he had killed. This was a great cover. Marty Robbins did a lot of songs in this genre and I hope Geoff covers more of them.

Dennis, I'm like you. Geoff introduces me to songs I wouldn't normally hear, and he does them so compellingly, it's a joy to be exposed to them. I appreciate your reaction and your kind words about all of Geoff's hard work -- the man's a maniac! Cheers

The ranger is the one with the big iron, the stranger that comes into to town at the beginning, he reveals himself to be a ranger and that he's coming for Texas Red, Red isn't worried because he's ended 20 before and the ranger is going to be 21. However the ranger shoots before Red even "clears leather"! Geoffs agility is getting better and better as is his arranging!

Yeah. Given that he says her name at the end of his 'patron shout-out', I think he should have repeated her name about ten times, in honor of her refusing to give up her campaign to have him record this full version, LOL.

Oh I have been WAITING for this!!! I have been having a rough time with vertigo and dizziness every day since the 4th of July. Docs don’t know why. At least I get to listen to Geoff and this reaction 👍😅

One of the things I like about this song is does not happen in isolation it includes the townsfolk and how they felt. Big irons were very expensive so to see someone carrying one in the old west was rare unlike Hollywood would have us believe (about $2000 today).

Amazing cover of this song. I would love to hear him cover El Paso by Marty Robbins and Gentle On My Mind by Glen Campbell/ John Hartford. Both are great story songs.
