That part was written by Geoff himself I believe. He usually puts it in his description when he writes and adds stuff to his covers

That final chord (and a few others in the song) are almost a signature for Geoff (along with the drops just for the heck of it). And I so love Geoff’s sense of humor. Love the reaction and history lesson!! Where are you guys in Wyoming? I have family all over the state!

"Man of Constant Sorrow" (also known as "I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow") is a traditional American folk song first published by Dick Burnett, a partially blind fiddler from Kentucky. The song was originally titled "Farewell Song" in a songbook by Burnett dated to around 1913. **this was way before licensing ** so as Matt said you get inspired and it slips into your head and dreams and the muse wakes you with an idea and you either get lucky and have a popular hit or it dies out and is later rediscovered (not stolen) *chuckle

It’s funny that so many people think Geoff’s original bridge is some other country song. Just goes to show how good he is at writing a catchy melody! And as others said, Geoff doesn’t do inhale bass. He can chest-fry and growl, but 99% of the time if the note is F1 and below, he is using subharmonics.

First: the part you didn't know is written by himself (as well as a bridge in their cover of Golden Hour and the rap in Valhalla Calling) and I think it's just beautiful. Second: I think Geoff once said that he doesn't even know how to use inhale notes. All three E1's in this are subharmonics. Loved your reaction👌

Hey guys... I really enjoy the content. To answer your query, Geoff is actually beginning to write into the covers now and that's where the bridge came from in Man Of Constant Sorrow. I thought that I'd heard it before too, but upon research it turns out that he wrote it, as well as the bridge in Golden Hour as well as the rap verse in Valhalla Calling. A man of many talents he surely is and I'd wondered forever why he doesn't do originals given his level of skill. Fingers crossed that may change in the near future. Geoff Castellucci is a Music God.

Ohh.... Also Geoff doesn't do any inhaling technique to Schreiber his notes based upon my research and the story about Layne being able to go lower than Geoff by inhaling was actually a practical joke created by Layne himself to rib Geoff. Lol. Gotta love their childlike bemusement.

Geoff said recently that he had been interested in doing entirely original music, but when Voiceplay started getting popular he realized that he just wouldn't have enough time to do both and chose Voiceplay.

The bridge was original, During a chat with his patrons, he showed us his notes, the crossed out lines, change from sins to sin, and explained his thought process when working on the lyrics. It's all Geoff, all the time, melody in that part as well. I was not fond of this song until Geoff put his detailed touch on it. It is oddly hopeful. The way he did the rhythm, makes it sound more upbeat. He had a golden shore note on the back of the picture, he was carrying that sweet bouquet of baby's breath. And that final chord after the low note. Perfection!! He is in the Orlando area, he worked very hard to keep a palm tree to the left of the quartet out of the frame.

I also love the hopeful feel in this regardless of the title. Another reactor, and I wish I could remember who, commented that that upbeat tempo reminded her of a train clacking down the rails and now when I listen to it that’s what I hear!

I love how he threw in that minor chord in this major key! I think he wrote that "new" section. As to the original melody and words, it is Appalachian and it quite a bit more than 100 yrs old. Scruggs used and recorded it because it hadn't been published, as most folk music was never actually published, especially Appalachian music. I love this.

Those Hymns you mentioned, from what I've heard.....the actual music that goes with those Negro Spiritual songs came from the Saloons where people had heard the music which then had new lyrics instead of the old worldly lyrics!!

Nice video as always! The extreme low notes are not inhales, they're subharmonics. Geoff has a video or 3 on the topic. Essentially, he makes his vocal folds vibrate at different speeds so that the resulting note heard is lower. As you can hear at 4:23 , it also has the added effect of some extra "rattling". Have a nice day!

For the low notes he uses subharmonics you sing a note and let your voice into vocal fry activating the false folds which vibrate at exactly half the frequency of your true vocal cords and the sound is exactly one octave lower than what you are actually singing

In a live video chat Geoff said that Layne can do low notes by inhaling, but that he can't do it. It's a subharmonic. To the best of my knowledge Geoff hasn't done this song before. As mentioned below, it's an old song. Before Scruggs. I first heard it in the movie, then heard Home Free do it, and now Geoff has made it his own with his own addition of a bridge which he wrote. So it may have sounded familiar but definitely wasn't. Not sure about the "borned", it isn't all the clear to me. Maybe someone will ask him. :)

BUT that being said, there are just some songs that are not better with this deep baritone and I am sorry but I do not think Geoff's voice works for this song...
