The bridge that you enjoyed so much was a Geoff original; it wasn't in the original song. Also, Geoff's PSA at the end was pretty important considering Layne actually wanted to film on tracks that were in use. *Aaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh*

I think the term you were looking for is Greek chorus, defined as “a homogeneous, non-individualized group of performers, who comment with a collective voice on the dramatic action”. A really good (more contemporary) example is the three girls that kept popping up to sing in Little Shop of Horrors. Aaaaaaaaah!

You are not alone in liking the bridge as much if not more than the rest of the song. I also felt that way in Christmas don’t be late. (It doesn’t hurt that I really hated that song until they did it as I heard it through my entire childhood and I’m really old.). But it seems that the bridges that he’s writing are almost better than the rest of the song. He needs to release an album of just his little bridges.

This song has been around since 1913 and has moved through song titles and styles with the years. (Originally titled "The Farewell Song) There IS arguably no "right" way to preform it for all its rich history and transformation. It reminds me much of the "two sisters" folk songstory (in which one sister does away with the other but is later done in by a musical instrument made from the dead sister's bones and hair) perhaps most popularly preformed as "The Bonny Swans" by Loreena McKennit, but adapted to numerous genres and cultures since the 17th century.

Ummmmm.... aahhhhhhhhhh 😉 Other versions of this song that I've heard have been pretty downbeat but Geoff's version has an almost hopeful note to it. I love the faster tempo he's used and that middle section you raved about was written by the man himself. His low notes turn me to jelly as well but some of his higher notes can have a similar effect - and I never knew how much I needed to see him in a battered old hat, strumming a guitar until the first time I saw the video 🥵😍

I thought it was interesting that the principal vocalist is one of the quartet, not the visually active Geoff. This is one song where knowing the original would have been an advantage, because you don't know what is unique to Geoff's version--and it is very different. I love the bridge that he wrote. It's become an earworm--not that I'm complaining. Love Mason kibitzing. The PSA was worth it.

Listening to Geoff's covers (or Voiceplays, too) without knowing the original song sometimes is like watching some "Part II movies" or "2nd season of a TV Show" where a new story is told. You don't imperatively need to know the first movie or season to enjoy it, but perhaps you'll miss some references or allusions to the predecessor 😄 (if this makes any sense - I’m not that good with the English language🙃). Great reaction, of course! I liked it very much as one of your "I'll better stop it after every note to explain or discuss it"- reactions. May be "horrible" for those who want to listen to the whole thing once, but that should be done before watching any reaction.☺👍 EDIT: And big shoutout to Mason! Great work again! You make fun -> hilarious and good -> exceptional!. 🧑🍳👌

It's an old song which was featured in a rather famous film, Oh Brother Where Art Thou. Then done by Hone Free- very nice it was too . And now Geoff has made it his own by adding a bridge section that he wrote for it. And of couse his harmonies. People asked him if he played the guitar and he said yes, but on the key board, by using effects.

That PSA about the tracks is because Layne scouted them out at first. When Geoff and Kathy got there, they discovered that they were the tracks for the commute 🚃🚃🚃🚃 train and they were filming at 5 PM! When Geoff pointed out that the crossing was right there, Layne just looked at him and said “but once the lights start flashing you have over a minute to get off of the tracks”🤯. Fortunately cooler heads prevailed and they found some abandoned tracks less than a half hour away. 🤦🏼♀️ I really love the storyline of this piece. During the depression my dad made his way out from North Dakota to California on the rails when he was 13. When we were older, he told us how lonely he was out here with none of his family. That’s the feeling I got from this piece. I wish my dad was still around to watch it - I think he would’ve really enjoyed it.

Geoff definitely took this song away from sorrow and over to something more uplifting. I almost feel like it's someone starting out on an adventure, but not someone going away for good, and I really like that change as well as the addition of the bridge. Additionally I have to agree with Mason, it's very important to watch Geoff's outro for this video! 😂
@MuriKakari Жыл бұрын
You're looking for Greek Chorus, probably couldn't come to mind because it's such a simple name - in this particular song, I can confidently assume that even if Geoff didn't intend that effect (and I bet he did), the arranger who made it for the movie ABSOLUTELY DID - the entire movie is a take on the Odyssey; at points, the symbolism and call outs to the Odyssey basically hit you over the head. So yes, this song was made famous as part of a Greek epic being retold, that's a Greek Chorus and Greek plays adore in medias res as a device.
@ilonadever8249 Жыл бұрын
I've read the blog you referenced, and she does explain a lot of the musical theory, some of which I understood. ;) My favorite part of this piece was Geoff's attention to detail; the holes in his hat, inscription on the back of the photograph, the bouquet of baby's breath that he carries throughout. This is not a happy song (usually) but Geoff made it sweet, wistful, and hopeful. He's absolutely wonderful! Ummmmmmmm...uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Geoff's PSA was a good thing to leave in cause you never know what ideas people could come up with nowadays. Two of the funniest moments were at 18:42 and when Mortius asked if Mason could identify the chord that was used and it cut to Mason just shaking his head like: "I don't even know, dude." Those two moments were extremely funny.

"Man of Constant Sorrow" (also known as "I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow") is a traditional American folk song first published by Dick Burnett, a partially blind fiddler from Kentucky. The song was originally titled "Farewell Song" in a songbook by Burnett dated to around 1913. A version recorded by Emry Arthur in 1928 gave the song its current titles. Several versions of the song exist that differ in their lyrics and melodies. The song was popularized by the Stanley Brothers, who recorded the song in the 1950s; many other singers recorded versions in the 1960s, most notably by Bob Dylan. Variations of the song have also been recorded under the titles of "Girl of Constant Sorrow" by Joan Baez and by Barbara Dane, "Maid of Constant Sorrow" by Judy Collins, and "Sorrow" by Peter, Paul and Mary. It was released as a single by Ginger Baker's Air Force with vocals by Denny Laine. Public interest in the song was renewed after the release of the 2000 film O Brother, Where Art Thou?, where it plays a central role in the plot, earning the three runaway protagonists public recognition as the Soggy Bottom Boys. The song, with lead vocal by Dan Tyminski, was featured on the film's highly successful, multiple platinum-selling soundtrack. That recording won a Grammy for Best Country Collaboration at the 44th Annual Grammy Awards in 2002. Though this is a decent amd good cover of the song MAN OF CONSTANT SORROW. Its not my favorite and I dont like the music hes making for it. I was actually aftaid that you liatwning to this vwrsion would turn you off the song all together. I folkrst heard rhis song in the movie Oh Brother Where art Thoigh and rhat performance and the muaic was epic and amazing. But I must say HOME FREES VERSION of Man of constant Sorrow is 5000 times better and sexy also. Trust me when i say you will love their cover much more and also their music. I hope you dont keep us waiting long. And if you could do a back to back reaction first Oh Brother Where Art Thous version from the movie and then watch home frees man of constant sorrow version. Rhose are the best versions in my opinion. And Im a singer and musician and am open minded to other peoples cover. But I wasnt too crazy about this version. However Ive seen home frees version 50+ times bwcause its so good I keep coming back to watch it. Lol

I adore Mason's little interjections and you vibing. Also, I giggled when you described it as "minor and squishy." Yes, we are all squishy. 9:03 is, I believe, B augmented. The fact that the rest of the song has been pretty straightforward I-IV-V-I, the sudden railroad spike of an augmented chord shocks the ears. Geoff is a MASTER of that. On a side note, "Cowboy Geoff" is what finally got my husband addicted. (Ghost Riders did it for him.) My husband has hair a little longer than Geoff's and also starting to go gray. He sometimes fears it's unprofessional, or even "girlie." I told him recently, it's not girlie at all, it's a "cowboy" look, and I showed him the video to Geoff's "Ghost Riders," which is one of his favorite songs in the world. Then THIS dropped with another cowboy Geoff. Yesterday, my husband admitted he was binge-watching Geoff and VoicePlay videos all weekend. YES!!! Finally got him hooked on my favorite acapella group.

... And I know of a large number of people who would give Geoff those things 😉 but I get what you're saying, sometimes a song takes on a life and story of its own that's not directly or fully connected to the literal lyrics. It can be more about such things as the mus8cians' choice of treatment, or a movie it was used in. Another example of such a song in the US folk tradition is House of the Rising Sun, one of the most covered folk songs I believe, which Geoff has also covered. Another example of a song that's almost more connected to a movie it was used in is Unchained Melody, which was in an iconic scene of the movie, Ghost.

The original song is kind of odd in its tempo as well. Although about a mans sadness, there is an undercurrent of excitement at what he is about to do. An old Folk song, first recorded around 1915, he is bidding farewell to all he knows and loves before he runs for freedom. The song of a slave. Listen for the line about riding that northern railroad, and it becomes clear. It has absolutely nothing to do with a railroad, but references the organization that smuggled slaves to free States. Originally called “The Goodbye Song “ or sometimes “The Farewell Song “, it is sadness tempered by excitement. Geoff does a wonderful job of singing, but I feel it a little to “jazzy” for this song. The sadness is lost. Personally, I find the Home Free version more balanced to the emotion of the song.
