In this song he only used chest voice for the lower notes. But he's also very skilled at subharmonics. He mostly uses those when he has to drop lower than his chest range can go. Geoff's range can go quite a bit lower than you hear in this song, and also quite a bit higher 😅 Geoff chose to use a mainly breathy chest voice in this one. It's not something he does often, he usually uses a proper chest voice. But it's nice that he switches his approach up depending on each song ❤

Yeah, Geoff is incredible with a 5 octave range. He does subharmonics but from my limited knowledge, he sings in all chest voice in this song. His lowest recorded note was a B0 so he can go way lower. He’s also incredibly creative and he arranges and sings bass with his acapella group, VoicePlay. Those guys are absolute magic together so I hope you will react to them, too! ❤

There are several things that make Geoff special. He can play several instruments and does all the instrumentation in his songs. He does his own video editing, arranging, and production. He just doesn't do final edit. His range is huge but others have his range. The difference is the smoothness and clarity. You can understand the words when he sings at both ends of his range whereas with other basses that isn't the case for the most part. He and vp both really look at the lyrics and make the music suit the lyrics. His version of Ain't no Sunshine is superb in this way. Subbed to see your reaction to that one

Geoff is an amazing singer. He has a 5+ octave range. From super low to super high. He has a bunch of fantastic videos on his channel. You can't go wrong with anything you choose to watch. I love everything he sings. But my favorites are.... Rains of Castemere from Game of Thrones. Ain't No Sunshine. Jack's Lament from Nightmare Before Christmas. Ghost Riders In The Sky. He also does narrations of audiobooks. All beautiful. You should watch all the way through to after the credits as he usually does a little thank you speech and sometimes some behind the scenes. Geoff is also the bass singer for the acapella group Voiceplay. They are also amazing. Same with them on choosing videos and watching the whole thing. At present they only have 4 members so depending on the song and time of the video is who is their 5th. My favorites with them..... Sleeping In The Cold Below (just released Friday). Dragonborn Comes Skyrim. Halo Theme. The Lion Sleeps Tonight. Seven Nation Army. Drunken Sailor. That will give you 10 suggestions to start with. Welcome to the rabbit holes 🐰🐰

Off to watch some more of yours. Also “it makes me so happy” is exactly why voiceplay/geoff have pulled so many of us in to being huge fans, it really doesn’t take much more than a couple of songs to do it. They just make us all so happy (unless they’re making us cry with a couple of songs 😢😂)

Geoff and Kathy have a behind the scenes of setting up for the video. No close parking, they had to lug all the eq (+piano) to the room, down a sidewalk. In Geoff's videos it is usaully just himself and Kathy, tho the other members of Voiceplay lend expertise when needed. They are truly good people, and it shows in everything they do.

Both of them stretch their abilities, and their creativity to the limits, and sheer brilliance is the result. To see Geoff’s range, please check out Jack’s Lament or I See Fire. A little over four years ago, Geoff astounded a lot of people by hitting an E1 using subharmonics in VoicePlay's version of "Oogie Boogie's Song" from 'The Nightmare Before Christmas', and since they were still touring at the time, there are some (phone recorded) videos around youtube showing him hitting it live, along with some clips that he's released with him doing it live as a demonstration. In the years since, he has just gotten better and better at using them, but I think at the same time his chest voice is deepening as well. Whether that has anything to do with the subharmonics or just that he is 'naturally' continuing to be able to extend his range downward with age as basses are often blessed with doing, I suppose is debatable. But as a patron of Geoff's and VoicePlay who has the chance to watch in on their chats and live streams, it absolutely seems like he does practice almost all the time. Some people hum out of habit, Geoff beatboxes and drops subharmonics. For the past two years or so, he has repeatedly hit a G1 in chest with seeming ease, and the subharmonics have dropped down, with him hitting D1, C1 and B0. A few months ago, they released a version of 'Whiskey in the Jar', and in that one he hit the F1 in chest rather than having to use a subharmonic, he said that on the day he recorded his vocals, he just happened to have a good F1 in him, LOL.

I think this is full chest (lowest note here is G1) for those low notes. He is a master of the subharmonics - just not here. He has a 5 octave range from A0 (growl), B0 (subharmonic), F1 (full chest), B4 (mix), Bb5 (falsetto). For his solos, he uses himself to harmonize, with 3 or 4 Geoff clones.

Welcome to Geoff. His range is an incredible five octaves and his range of genres is just as wide. Yes he goes into subharmonics but this isn't it. His range is now A0 to A#5. In chest he can go down to D1. Yes He layers voice a lot. Often he will appear as clones of himself to show him singing the four or part harmonies he creates.

Most of the time, Geoff creates video duplicates of himself; this is the third one in a row where he has not brought the harmonies on screen. He said today that the boys will be back in the next one. There are bass singers who can sing a little lower and a little higher than Geoff, but none can match the velvet clarity of his voice. He is the bass singer in the acapella group Voiceplay. I highly recommend that you check them out. Start with Hoist the Colours from Pirates of the Caribbean 3. Trust me. Subscribed in anticipation of more Geoff and Voiceplay.

I love this version so much and your reaction was perfect. It is definitely vying for my favorite of his covers although it is hard to pick. I highly recommend you also check out his covers of Blackbird, High and Dry, and Sound of Silence. He also has released the Dwarf Duology: Far Over The Misty Mountains Cold and I See Fire from the Hobbit movies. He does all his own arranging, videography, editing, and production with his wife Kathy. He also arranges about 50% of the covers for his acapella group, Voiceplay, who I also highly recommend. They are my favorite acapella group. They go from serious to zany and everything in between but all with incredible quality. They are also 100% independent and funded by their Patrons so not only do they have creative control they don't copyright block video's so if you ever get a block it is never from them. Of their work I recommend Valhalla Calling, Dragonborn Comes from Skyrim, Hoist the Colors, Nothing Else Matters by Metalica. Have subscribed in anticipation of more videos!

@@RetiringvirusReacts VoicePlay (under a different group name) has been recording since 1997. They rebranded around 2010 and some of the group changed a bit, where is the baritone switched to boxing, and they brought in their rock tenor at that point. I believe the oldest of the videos on their channel is around three years after that. So there’s plenty to choose from! Geoff started his channel when Covid stopped them from touring. The group generally does at least one feature each month plus a few minis from time to time. He started out a little slow but lately he’s been sending out a release almost every month.

I check daily for new reactions to my favorite bass singer and my favorite a cappella group and somehow I missed this one. You’ve got a new subscriber! He usually will film multiples of himself to go with the multiple layers. He usually arranged four and five part harmonies and does all the parts. This is one of a very few where he does not have a visual representation for the various layers. Check out his cover of Misty Mountains Cold and I See Fire from Desolation of Smaug. He is wearing beards and hairpieces and many people think it is a group. He not only sings and plays the piano, but all the other music is from keyboards and plug-ins m .

Ready to have your mind blown? Geoff does NOT consider himself to be a bass singer. In a video on his channel from a couple of years ago, he described himself as a " baritone with a good bass extension." In an interview with reactor Peter Barber (himself a professional bass opera singer) from a few months back, Geoff still wouldn't call himself a bass singer. This from a guy who is fast approaching the day he drops off the low end of a piano keyboard.
