My daughter wants to learn how to paint landscapes in water colour. So I decided I'd help her out by searching for videos I think she should watch. I have only watched the first 5 minutes and already I am commenting because I am so impressed. There are several reasons: 1. Unlike other tutorials, you show what you started with, without a lot of extraneous gabbing. 2. You showed the selection and mixing of the colours AND your selection of paint brush. 3. You demonstrated how to hold and use the brush as well as what NOT to do. In other words, you did not talk a lot on just the technical side (color, lighting, composition). Instead you described and demonstarted the brush stroke technique to use. 4. Your first 4 minutes showed me a recognizaable tree and you have only STARTED. Your video may be almost 4 years old, but it one I am going to suggest to anyone who is a beginner and wants to learn how to paint water colour landscapes. Thank you.

I love how you use the grainy paper to make the tree. That's ingenious! That makes a beautifully realistic tree. I admire you for giving away your secret to how you make your tree look so realistic. Well done, Mr. Kersey! The 240 people who gave your technique a thumbs down don't appreciate how beautiful your technique or we'll never know why they gave it a thumbs down. Their loss!

What a great teacher. He is easy to listen too, and I also love as well how he mixes his paint on the fly too, as another had mentioned earlier in a comment. Why do why like such a thing as that? I just LOVE painting trees, mountain scenes, water scapes (lakes, streams, ocean) - ANYthing in nature, really, including wildlife, but have had a hard time finding tutorials online that explain the sequence & timing of each step - and really have had a hard time getting my pine trees to look less flat (like a comb) as well as achieving that depth without getting my colors all muddled. After watching your video (which happened to come up in my feed), I Subscribed! I'm going to try some trees right now using a few different water color sets while keeping in mind; 1. Mix your colors first 2. Wet the area with clear water 3. Start at the center of the tree & work your way outward 4. Use the side of the paintbrush (not the tip) to scumble in the color for texture & spacing 5. Lay down the lightest color first, then the darker tone on the shadow side, then touch in the highlights using the tip of a smaller round brush 6. Fill in gaps with suggestions of the trunk all the way around and up 7. Touch the base of the foliage where it meets the trunk with a bit of main tree color to blend over the top of the trunk so the trunk appears to be behind the foliage. THANK YOU! VERY Helpful! :)

I'm a total beginner who is trying to teach himself the "big-brush" or "fast-and-loose" style of watercolor popularized by the late Ron Ranson. Hence, I have watched many, many videos on various aspects of watercolor painting. Geoff, this is absolutely, positively the best tutorial on trees that I have EVER seen! Moreover, I think the vast majority of your techniques will "translate" well into my work with the 2" goat-hair hake brush (supplemented by a 1" flat brush and #3 rigor). Thank you VERY much for your clear, logical explanation and demonstration.

Thank you so much for your tutorial!! Extremely helpful. I really appreciate the fact that you show how you work through little mistakes here and there, as it's a lot more realistic; I think many artists (beginner artists, etc) feel as though when they make a mistake, their artwork is gone. It's refreshing to see how those mistakes can be utilized in a painting, instead of *ruining* it. Your art is beautiful! Thanks so much again. :)
