TfL have put out a consultation about added a new bus to the Superlook network - the BL1 which would run along the route of the proposed Bakerloo Line extension.
I got to have a sneak peek of what they bus looked like, and chat to the MD of Go Ahead, who would most likely run the bus out of their Camberwell Garage.
The TfL Consulation is here : haveyoursay.tf...

TfL should make Superloop bus routes for all the railway lines they are campaigning for, use stats for those buses to help with the business case for the railway and build up the ridership that can later move onto the trains. As each railway extension finally gets authorised and built, the Superloop buses should be moved onto the next thing.

The 'Loop Bus services should be retained, and run in parallel with the same-named lines. This would make all-night running a bit easier to manage, as well as having a pre-built rail-replacement bus service. Naturally, all the fares and OSIs should still work with the buses. How about having a cross-platform interchange between a bus and train ?

Of course a tube train holds many more passengers than a bus, so extending the line should still be a priority. Here in Queens, NY they just finished up a complete redesign of the entire bus network for the Borough. A massive undertaking with a lot of public input. I believe Brooklyn is next up for a redesign.

I've only just noticed that there's no daytime bus route that goes from Lewisham to Waterloo, you have to change for the 453 or 172 at New Cross. The only other direct option is the train which often face delays at Lewisham. And the only bus going between OKR and Lewisham is the 21 which gets filled to the brim often. So the BL1 would definitely do a lot for Lewisham.

453 doesn’t go Lewisham or Waterloo and 172 doesn’t go Lewisham From Waterloo to Lewisham you either change at elephant and castle for the 136 Camberwell for the 436/484/185 (never get the last 2 buses mentioned lol if you value your time) Or New Cross gate for the 136/436/21/321/225(from New Cross)

There is a prototype map my bosses at New York City Transit are thinking of implementing that would show our Select Bus Service BRT-ish routes on the map along with the subway. The problem with adding this to the tube map, at least currently, is, personally, it’s already at information overload. The SBS routes would be simple blue lines, not on par with the subway lines. And for Bakerloop to join the map, you need some very specific way to convey “this is not the tube, this is a bus”.

Hi Geoff, you seem to have good contacts at TFL, could you find out why TFL hardly does cross border bus services? For example, Orpington and Sevenoaks being next to each other are not connected by TFL buses and only a local one (Go) that hardly runs. Would be a good video to explore why and if there are future plans for more cross border TFL buses between the "last" town in greater London connecting the first town across the border. Good idea for a super loop now that I think about it.

@@bourke2 Battery buses are a poor relation to trolleybuses. Battery buses have to have a much stronger frame and body to accommodate the batteries, mining lithium iron is not good for the environment, if they catch fire it can be disastrous. @markcf83 Yes but because of the movement of people for both work and leisure, both from people who live in London and those that are just outside, the transport side of things can't be neatly tied to the same political boundaries of Greater London, London's transport needs to cover further out like it used to. Much of London's traffic problems is people from outside as the local transport is rubbish or non-existent. But if we can expand London's contactless system to rail stations much further out than before, why not cover the buses under the same system? Plan it all together as one thing. TFL needs to become a South East Regional Transport Authority. The former London Transport covered much of the home counties from the 1930s to 1970, the reason Greenline 724 even exists. No reason we can't do it again and more necessary today as the region is far more built up.

Service is not needed on this stretch of proposed extension, but it is needed the other side from Lewisham to either Catford, Beckenham Junction (trams), or Hayes (along BR already built). At peak times the buses will just get stuck the entire route making them as slow as any other bus. They will also be full after 3 stops at Lewisham and will simply drive past everyone from New Cross to Elephant and Castle.

The investment in London’s transport system is incredible-I love it every time I visit! Meanwhile, here in the North East, our infrastructure is crumbling due to a lack of funding (just look at the Felling Bypass). Go North East struggles to keep its aging, second-hand buses running, and the Metro is still relying on 40-year-old trains because of constant delays-only one or two new ones are in service so far. @@fokuz2025 'cos the 21 doesn't go to Elephant and Waterloo. The main reason for not doing it is because simply rerouting the 453 doesn't alleviate overcrowding on the route.

I hope TfGM and Andy Burnham launch similar super loop routes in Greater Manchester. Neighbouring towns in GM despite being only a few miles apart have looooong stopping routes. Towns 5-10 miles apart are 60-90 minutes+ apart on a bus. The quickest public transport route then ends up being trains/trams into a busy Manchester city centre and back out again. There used to be routes roughly following the ring roads and M60 but they've long gone. Hopefully GM can take a look at GLdn's efforts and emulate.

I thought the whole purpose of extending is the Bakerloo is to relieve the Old Kent Road which is congested from all the buses. If this works instead then I can see the extension never happening... BTW, district seat moquete was used on some buses in the Orpington area (e.g. 51) in the early 90s.

Stagecoach put in a old Tube style moquette on two special livery buses in 2014 for the 100th anniversary of Catford Garage with a double deck ADL Enviro 400 10136 received the same moquette as the pre refurb D stock and 1983 stock interior and while a single deck ADL Enviro 200 36343 had a moquette that was similar to that was used on the 1938 stock.

Would be intresting if they had one branch going from lewisham-eltham-blendon-bexleyheath-erith to make use of the A2 and another branch going to catford-bromley to make use of the bus lanes on A21, it could be a night bus option as well since night buses in the south east are really slow

My issue with calling it Bakerloop is that it's not part of a loop, it's just an express route which has an interchange with the Superloop.
@JoeGrohlDJ

See also SL6 and SL8. Worse still, the upcoming SL4 doesn't interchange with the loop, and the SL6 isn't even express between Croydon and West Norwood. The orbitals should have been numbered 1-8 and the radials from 9 onwards, or preferably just kept as Xs and renumbered from 1 in order of introduction, seeing as there are several more to come!

Someone on Facebook suggested that you can already do E&C to Lewisham by train - forgetting that there are only 2 Thameslink trains an hour fron E&C that will only get you to Denmark Hill where you will have to wait over a quarter of an hous for one of the two South Eastern trains an hour to Lewisham. Not a good way to get there!!!!

Waterloo was directly connected by bus with Lewisham for most of the last century, until comparatively recently. Routes 1 and 199 were the routes involved, usually one or the other, but occasionally both, although they went via a devious routeing. The main reason Old Kent Road and Lewisham have always been starved of much direct contact with each other relates to the way surface public transport was developed in S.E. London with bus and tram taking different roles and 'corridors'. Westminster and Blackfriars Bridges were fitted with tram tracks, but Waterloo Bridge never was, nor Waterloo Road. Old Kent Road was host to both modes, and it even had its own, relatively small garage (code P) which operated the 21 and 53 in conjunction with other garages, all now closed. The 21 competed with a tram route between Bricklayers Arms, Lewisham and on to Eltham, which was numbered 182 when RT buses replaced the trams in 1962. Cuts and consolidation followed over the years, so the 182, which reached Cannon Street Station via Southwark Bridge, ran for the last time in the 1960s.
