After three days of inspections, the first race of the 2024 ORC World Championship, organized by the New York Yacht Club, in cooperation with the Offshore Racing Congress, will start with a long race designed to test the offshore skills of the 43 teams entered in the week-long event.
Starting at 10 hundred local time, all teams will set off from the start within Narragansett Bay, and head offshore to various buoys, and towers, placed in the Atlantic. and other locations ranging from west of Montauk on Long Island east, to Buzzards Bay Tower. The finish will also be near the harbor at Newport at Fort Adams
This is your weekly Global Sailing Highlights show, the World on Water, October 04, 2024.
Ergin Imre’s team with their newly launched Provezza, lead the Valencia 52 SUPER SERIES Royal Cup, after the first two races of the final event of the 2024 season were sailed in a testing, shifty light to moderate offshore South Westerly wind, which really had the afterguards on their toes through the afternoon racing off the Malvarrosa Beach.
Provezza, launched in August, sailed to a fourth, and a second, in the 13 boat fleet, which represents nine nations, to lead Andy Soriano’s Alegre, by a single point, whilst third place is held by Platoon Aviation, meaning the top three are all 2024 launched boats, built at this week’s regatta hosts, King Marine.
After 23 to 30 hours of racing and sailing courses varying in length from 157 to 203 miles, the fleet is finished, and the results are in, for the first race of the 2024, ORC World Championship, held at the New York Yacht Club, Harbour Court. These results are significant for all of the 43 teams competing because they are not discardable in the final score tallies.
Winning the only race of a frustrating second day of the Valencia 52 SUPER SERIES Royal Cup, Ergin Imre’s, Provezza team , are now four points clear at the top of the event classification. But the high level of consistency so far from 2023 circuit champions, Harm Müller Spreer’s , Platoon Aviation, means the German flagged team, are on something of a charge, making a late challenge for the 2024 title.
After starting this final regatta of the season at 28 points behind the circuit leaders, Tony Langley’s Gladiator, but over the first three races, Platoon, have already stripped 11 points from that deficit, sailing fast and smart, in the shifty, puffy offshore breezes which have seen both the British boat, and Quantum Racing, powered by American Magic, struggle to make an impression on the top third of the 13 boat fleet.
With exactly one month to go until the Vondée Globe race village opens its doors in Ley Sabb d’lonn, Giancarlo Pedote, the skipper of Prysmian, is more focused than ever on his objective. As was the case four years ago during his first participation, he is determined and motivated, to push himself to the limit, to enjoy a fulfilling experience and to get in the famous zone, “where the magic happens”. It is an adventure where certainty, and comfort, have no place, as you are constantly striving to go above and beyond, totally committed to the action.
After an early start to day six of the Citroën, Windsurf World Cup, Sylt, only the first three Freestyle heats could be completed in marginal winds, before it became too light and patchy, close to the shore to continue. After being kept on hold for a while, the freestylers were then released, and the decision was made to switch to Foil Slalom, during the afternoon. Racing took place in the lightest winds of the week, but it was two familiar names who continued to dominate proceedings, Justine Lemeteyer, and Johan Søe, after they claimed today’s bullets, to edge a step closer to the coveted event titles.
With Gladiator arriving into the Valencia 52 SUPER SERIES, Royal Cup, with an 18 points lead over Quantum Racing, powered by American Magic, and 28 ahead of defending champions, Platoon Aviation, tonight it is Doug De Vos’s, US team, which now leads into the last day of the season with just two points in hand over Langley, and his 2024 world champion crew, and four points on Harm Müller-Spreer’s, 2023 circuit champions.
With Morgan Larson steering, Victor Diaz de Leon, as tactician working with Nevin Snow, as strategist, Quantum Racing, powered by American Magic, aggregated 16 points over the three races, slightly bettered by Platoon’s 15, but with the British boat languishing in 10th, after netting a total of 30 points, it is all but even going into a Saturday showdown which could still yield three races.
