Terroni is kinda an offensive way some people call people from the South, it comes from "terra" earth since they were mostly agricultural and poor regions when italy unified, it's like calling them dirty since they do heavy and difficult jobs. I think it's getting better, now it's more said in a jokingly way, also the North is always referred to as snooty and greedy. (and often from the centre we tend to separate ourselves from all the chaos) We're feisty and competitive but we come all together for sports events and when it comes to pride in food and art

My parents are from North and South so I can see both pespective. Where my grandparents (the ones from the south) are from people told me that using "polentoni" not only refers to polenta but is also similar to the phrase "po' lentoni" (meaning "quite slow") so they use it as "stupid people" if not outright as "mentally challenged". Some people there really think northerners are stupid and easy to deceive. I often hear complaints as how bad the word "terroni" is, but since a word is not intrinsically bad but becomes so depending on how is used I think they are both pretty the same. Luckily they are mostly used as a joke nowadays, we are all italians after all.

A very, very popular online encyclopedia, which I will not name (and which everybody knows) states that, in the opinion of the majority of historians, all the Scottish links in Gurro have just been made up in the middle of the XXth century, for tourism purposes (though tourism - as far as I know - didn't really b(l)oom there…). Veneto (the region of Venice, Verona, Vicenza and part of Garda Lake and Dolomiti) is by far the most visited region in Italy (top 5 in Europe), it has more tourists per year than the entire Southern Italy. The Veronese part of the Garda Lake has more tourists per year than Naples or Florence. The province of Bolzano (or Alto Adige - Sudtirol) has more tourists than Lazio, the region of Rome. The top 5 most visited regions in Italy are all in the North except Tuscany (Central Italy): Veneto, Lombardia, Emilia Romagna, Sudtirol.

My Italian history teacher told us that politically Italy is a chemistry laboratory. They try everything possible and it only becomes dangerous for the world when we Germans start imitating them. Also, and I hope an Italian can give me their opinion on this, I have a feeling that Germany and Germans as a people in general have looked up to Italy a lot, especially on an artistic and cultural level. I mean the Holy Roman Empire was basically a German fanboy project commemorating the First Italian Empire. Many of our greatest artists got their inspiration from their trips to Italy and then unfortunately we also have the Second World War where Hitler's vision for a great empire was also very much copied from Mussolini's fascism and also the aesthetics of the Roman Empire. And whenever you ask Germans on the street about Italians, nothing but good things come up. Often something like, unlike us they know how to really relax and work to live not the other way around. But I wonder what do the Italians think about the Germans because I have the feeling they don't love us nearly as much as we love them? Anyway, love to Italy from Germany!
@irenecarrillo6750 Жыл бұрын
I mean we look up to Germany because it got put up together after losing two devastating wars and is now the most economically powerful country in the eu. A lot of young people also move there in hope of finding a job since the situation here is terrible. Some might be envious of your flourishing society, but mostly it's sought after. The stereotypes we have are kinda bad, sorry, "cold, angry sounding, only drink beer, eat potatoes and meat" (we do love German bread and beer, but we tend to criticise food from the north of Europe). Music from germany is great, any musician here will know of all the composers and culture you have in that regard. And personally even if nazism was bad not every german was at the time, my grandmother used to tell me about how her father was taken away by german soldiers for a whole day, how they were scared, how he returned on a car looking really happy (he was a barber they had just taken him to cut their hair) and how they let her on the car as well to go around the city (it was her first time seeing a car). Also it's cool how efficient germans are, and i would love it if we took example from the improvements you're making in the public transport sphere
@otto1449 Жыл бұрын
@@irenecarrillo6750 Very interesting, thank you for your insight. A lot of Italians helped with the development of Germany, my grandfather was a painter and a large number of his colleagues were temporary workers from Italy. It's a pity about the jealousy, but I can understand it well, like a reflection of Italy's northern and southern regions, unfortunately in Europe we also have the "rich" north and "poor" south and I very much hope that this will balance out in the future and that all EU citizens are not forced to change countries for economic survival as this of course only increases the problem. In Italy, I experienced that I was misunderstood as angry on a school trip, simply because I and a few German classmates were loud and excited about the sights and landscapes around a small Italian village (We spoke German of course). The residents who were probably not so used to tourists looked very scared of us, it didn't help that the ones I was traveling with were probably two heads taller than the people in the village. So yeah, I felt bad that I made such a threatening impression, it is certainly not a door opener. It's true that we eat a lot of potatoes, as far as I can tell, but pasta is also quite common. Fancy restaurants aside, German dishes are primarily meant to fill you up and taste good, not particularly unique or delicious just plain good. Nevertheless, we have a very diverse range of dishes at the regional level, but I have to admit that German dishes are usually built around the piece of meat. We are very good at sauces and salads... but salads are made from pretty much everything except healthy things. And yes there is Potato salad and it's delicious. XD German music is really a great achievement, it's definitely one of the first things I would present to aliens to spare our humanity. But I must say Italian music can be very cheerful and there is a lot to dance to. As for fascism, I see it that way: We Germans were gears in an evil machine, you can take each one out and the individual cog must not have been evil but as a whole we have undoubtedly brought much suffering to europe. And as a German, I don't necessarily see it as a hereditary guilt, but as an hereditary responsibility for us never to allow something like that again and now, as in the Ukraine, to show a clear edge against expansionists and genocides.

@@irenecarrillo6750 Don't worry, that was the first and only time I've experienced that, most of the time we were in typical tourist zones and there we only encountered open and friendly Italians. And of course I didn't find it unfriendly either, we were the strangers who frightened them and thus certainly strengthened the German streotype at least to the people who live there. I also had one of my best experiences in Venice, we got lost on the class trip. Were hungry from searching and walking around and didn't really know what to do, Google maps wasn't really a thing for us then. And then a super nice Italian chef came up to us, he probably saw us staring stupidly into the area. He knew some German because his son lived there and happened to work in the same town where we came from. He served us one of the most delicious pizzas I've ever had at a generous discount. Then he helped us to find the way to our class meeting point. It was really a great experience and yes, I couldn't imagine that in a German restaurant.

From Venice here, the flooding has become more intense in recent years due to a combination of factors (climate change plus bad management); however, they built a complicated system of movable barriers so it has stopped being so severe. I live in Friuli. It isn't so popular because probably is a bit too far off, it's a border region of North-East Italy. It shares it's boundaries with Austria, Slovenia and Croatia. There are the Alps, the Hills (where we produce some of the best wines of Italy, google "Colli Orientali"), plains (it's the fartest eastern extention of Padania plain) and last but not least the sea. In Trieste we hold every year the biggest regatta of the world, the "Barcolana", with hundreds of sailing ships and even our training military vessel shows up every year for such event. There are a number of notable archeological sites but after all the whole region is basically an historical site... As like the whole rest of Italy. Oh, we have the mummies too, at Venzone. A small urban center in the hill region. We speak our language, the Furlan with a distinct dialect, the Cjarniel. We also have one of the most largest, but also shortest rivers in Europe: the Tagliamento. 1100 meters wide. We have also a great respect for environment at the point that basically the whole alpine area of the region is kept in really good shape. We have althought problems with bears and wolfs but... Unless you don't walk alone in the forests, you shouldn't have problems. Recently we have welcomed a lots of migrants from both Mediterranean routes and from Ukraine. They both integrated quite well in our society and are more than welcome here. They both are good workers and good neighboors. Friuli is sometimes called "A small compendium of universe". 😎👍

Interesting fact bout Venice or Venezia being flooded. People expected that the project that has been made, the "Mose" to literally help the levels of water from rising, tho being completly blind and oblivious the problem is majourly in the foundations where Venice is standing. Those are the same ones that thousands of years ago have been made to keep it afloat, and are definetly not tested for millions and millions to stay on every year, so they are slowly giving in and sinking. If I recall should be 1 Cm of sinking every year? or something like that.

Don't listen to him for the soccer argument, cause what he says is invalid; Australia, New Zealand and Ireland just call it soccer to differentiate it from their regional variants of football (Australian and Gaelic football, respectively) as the US does - by the way, what you call football is actually rugby. The Philippines, Japan and Papua New Guinea adopted it directly from the US. South Africa probably does it only to tease the British and Canada is once again being polite to you. Every other civilized nation calls it football, including its homeland, the UK (and Scotland, of course). Except Italy, they call it "the kicking game", because there it predates modern rules on physical altercation between players - the old-style "calcio fiorentino" is more like an MMA battle than actual football...

10:17 i've always thought, as an half-north-italian, half south, that south italians were called terroni bc they were farmers (terra = earth, field)
@matteocolpo7140 Жыл бұрын
10:19 terroni derives from terra wich means ground and has a variety of possible etymologies like: farmers, inhabitants of earthquakes lands, ground eaters and more… Each of that has a specific reason so no one knows for sure where it came from

In German "Po" means Butt... There is a butt river in Europe... If it's not dried out... We have a little problem there for the last 5 years and it's propably getting worse... And yeah... Venice flooding is due to global warming and rising sea-levels. It happened before every 10 years and not that problematic... Yeah the streets got wet... What ever. But since the 2000s it happens nearly twice a year. So they built Moses... No joke... They built Moses. Go watch a video about it.

We as italians gesticulate. A lot. Don't be scared if you ask me something about, say, my city and I begin to describe it that way. We are not aggressive, it's our way to argument, interact, argue. No wonder we speak loud too. A true italian has to put his soul in what he does. That's why we cook, paint, write this way. I'm from an older generation, by the way...

Don't quote me on this but I believe Venice is sinking for the same reason Chicago is (was?) sinking. Or Mexico City. It was built on marshland (on stilts, in this case) and the soft ground can't support all that weight.
@giovannimoriggi5833 Жыл бұрын
In Venice iI's not the earth that sinks, it's the sea that rises. Chicago is younger, full of heavier building and extremely larger than Venice. The real reason is the brutal alteration of the lagoon bed

Venice is known for "Aqua alta" (High water) for centuries. There is nothing new about it being flooded every year.

4:00 The rose parts are occupied zones from WW2. They had to get Germany's help to take Greece or stay long enough in Egypt. The war Italy launched against Ethiopia was savage. Ignoring the 1925 Geneva Protocol which it signed along with 15 other major countries committing them not to use chemical agents in war, fascist Italy unleashed mustard gas during its invasion of Ethiopia in the second Italo-Abyssinian War. According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), a precise casualty toll may never be determined. But an estimate stated that 15,000 of the 50,000 Ethiopian civilian casualties in the war were from poison gas.

I'm Italian and I saw your video which deals with the topic of Italy. I found the guy in the video very quick in his explanations, however given the little time available I would say that he gave many generic answers, some of which were also valid if desired, even if I have to make a small correction, said Sicily (whose capital is the city of Palermo) and then Naples and Milan. Sicily is a region of our Italian state, while the other two are cities, furthermore at the beginning it says Barbato, but the correct word is Barbaro, that is, someone who was foreign to our civilization and was and is violent, while Barbuto is someone who has Beard on his face

4:28 The word soccer originates in England. It’s an abbreviation of Association Football. They used the word synonymous with football until the 1960s. So the English insistence on calling it only football is a bit hypocritical.

Aqua alta - the flooding of Venice is for centuries a common occurence in winter.
@morthasa Жыл бұрын
Venice doesn't flood every year, it is more like every few months (depending on the season, and how high you want the water to get before you consider it "flooding"). AFAIK it isn't so much due to global warming, as much as a combination of high tide and the wind blowing *just right*. That said, human influence is still felt, as massive ships and industrialisation have eroded the lagoon's bed increasing the phenomenon's severity. In sept. 2023 the MOSE project (essentially a massive system of moving dams) is due to be inaugurated which should mitigate the phenomenon a bit. Also, "terroni" refers to "terra", meaning ground/earth and essentially implies that the people from the south are farmers (implying uncultured yokels). You don't want to call a southener terrone to their face.

Do not go to Italy in the summer! It is hot and full of tourists. Go in the spring (April is best IMHO) or Autumn (October is great). It is still sunny and warm, but not too hot and much easier to navigate. No long queues to the museums and monuments. The prices go down as well. When you look for a place to eat, always follow the locals. Italians make a lot of money from tourists who do not know their way but know places that are good and cheap.

Speaking of Venice (since I live 40 minutes away from it), it's not really because of global warming. Let me elaborate: the city is sinking, literally, it was built on small islands (and with small I mean small, the size of football fields) made of sand in the middle of the lagoon, reinforced and connected with wooden stilts that petrified during the millennia. You know what they say about building anything on sand... This is exacerbated by the ship traffic, as it causes waves that further erode the petrified wood stilts, increasing the pressure. So no, global warming isn't really the cause, without it the city would still sink, but, you know, if the city sinks and, at the same time, the sea level rises, you can imagine it accelerates things.
