I was waiting for this the last 3 or 4 years, thank you so much! I have a few other things for anyone who is curious about other weird Swiss stuff: So, just to completely fortify the stereotypes about milk + Switzerland, Rivella, which is kind of like our national soda drink, contains 35% milk serum. xD It doesn't taste like milk at all though, don't worry.^^ Swiss German is a bit hard to explain, it's on the border between being an extremely heavy dialect and being an own language. Most Swiss dialects are so heavy and strange that Germans usually have no clue what you're saying, for example "hesch d'Finke agleit?" is "hast du die Pantoffeln angezogen" in German. Swiss neutrality is kind of strange because it isn't pacifist at all, and you get reminded of that all the time when you live here. For example on a nice forest walk here where I live you suddenly cross into a Sperrgebiet where there are surface-to-air missiles, just stacked on the meadow pointing to the sky, next to cows and farms. About the voting, yes we're basically voting all the time because of Volksinitiativen, which are policy changes etc. proposed by people and groups of the country gathered through signatures. So you get voting ballots in the mail very often, not just for elections, but to vote on all kinds of things. Schwingen is basically Swiss farmer wrestling, and the prize for 1st place is actually usually a live bull.^^ Also, a psychologist I had years ago was a Schwingerkönig. xD

22:50 Why did they not mention Islam in Switzerland, which constitutes more than 4% of the population? The people in charge of this channel are hypocrites. Remember Christianity in any country in the world, even if it is less than 1%, for example, Morocco. There is no Christianity, there are very few, and most of them are from France and Spain. Despite this, you mentioned them in the Morocco episode, but Islam constitutes 4% of the population of Switzerland, and yet you ignore them as well. In the episode of Russia, Russian Muslims constitute 15% of Russia’s rituals. Islam is considered the second largest religion in Russia and the fastest spread. However, they also ignored it. These are hypocrites and are not neutral, but biased towards Christianity.

I honestly think that as far as "technological" discoveries by the Swiss, the early modern pike block infantry formation REALLY should not be as understated as it is here. The Swiss mercenaries essentially changed the way warfare was conducted in Europe for centuries to come, and that had a lot of big BIG impacts on how European culture itself changed, the influence this had on feudal societies morphing into absolute monarchies, the effect on the Italian city states and so on. Besides that, what can you really say but awesome episode! Well done as always!

Happy to hear Hermann's very typical and distinctive Swiss accent in his English^^ One small remark: at 19:59 you included a picture of the battle of Sempach when you talked about the Battle of Morgarten ;) (Can't miss the legendary Arnold von Winkelried holding down the spears) And something not covered in the video which I think some people might find interesting would be how our direct democracy actually works: So very, very briefly summarised: If you collect 100'000 signatures in the span of 18 months you can make the population vote on changes to our constitution. And if the elected parlamentarians decide something with which you do not agree, you basically get 100 days to collect 50'000 signatures to make the entire country vote on that decision.

Yes, Céline Dion is Canadian, but Eurovision is a competition for the songwriters, which Céline Dion is not. That same year, Lara Fabian, a Belgo-Canadian, sang for Luxembourgish songwriters.
@crystalp72423 жыл бұрын
Eurovision nerd here. Each participating country is allowed to set their own rules on who can take part, and the only requirement that the EBU (European Broadcasting Union, which organizes Eurovision each year, in association with the host country’s member broadcaster) has actually set is that performers have to be 16 years of age or older (which was put in place in the early 1990s after a couple of performers around 11-12 years old took part; previously Sandra Kim had won for Belgium in 1986 when she was 13, but claimed in her song that she was 15). In the case of Switzerland, up until a few years ago there was no restriction on where the performer could be from, which is how Celine Dion (who was indeed from Canada, but at this point in her career had become well known in her home province of Quebec and was looking to break into the broader French market) ended up being selected (and, of course, won). That was changed a few years ago (it might have been around 2017), and now Swiss Eurovision performers have to be Swiss nationals. The nationality requirements vary from country to country, which has resulted in some interesting picks in terms of artists. Some countries have even had to look to other countries to find someone to represent them. Luxembourg and Monaco (both of whom have since withdrawn from Eurovision permanently) often sent performers from France, and the microstate of San Marino has only ever sent one Sammarinese artist (Valentina Monetta, who has represented San Marino four different times). They’ve twice sent Serhat, who is Turkish, as well as Senhit, who is originally from Bologna, Italy. And this is how Flo Rida, who is American, was able to take part in Eurovision, since he was paired up with Senhit, who was representing San Marino. And each individual country can also set nationality requirements for songwriters if they want, but again it varies from country to country, and the EBU has no limits on how many entries an individual songwriter can have in the Contest. For example, in the 2019 Contest, John Lundvik (who was singing for Sweden) had two competing entries, as he had co-written the song he performed as well as co-written the UK’s entry. Another writer, Laurell Barker, had *three* songs on which she was credited as a writer competing in that same Contest! (She was credited on the entries for Germany, Switzerland, and the UK. The highest placing entry of those three was Switzerland’s, which placed fourth in 2019.) Phew 😅…that’s a lot to take in!

@antarcticaball84913 жыл бұрын
@@GhGh-sj4wb Just because they didn't mention islam doesn't mean they are biased towards Christianity also what does religion have to do with this video this video is about learning culture and geography and fact about Switzerland it has nothing to do with religion at all just because they didn't mention anything related to islam doesn't mean they are islamphobe. Also Switzerland is a secular nation. This video has nothing to do with religion.

another confusion, all living units need to have an air raid shelter (or access to a nearby) which is basically a bunker these are usualy in the basement, those on the images shown are mainly military bunkers. some schools have emergency bunker hospitals. i went to a school that had one of the largest emergency hospitals beneath and most schools have a large bunker for civil protection. the whole population can fit inside these theoretically, but many are (against the law, but it's rarely enforced) used for other stuff.

What about the Vatican and San Marino. The foreign groups of Italians, Swiss, etc abroad. People from the old Italian colonies (mostly died, probably).
