No way, U-ganda be kidding me, #Uganda is up? Well "U" will have to ride a "GANDA-la" here once you see how cool Uganda is, and soon "U" will be "Gone"- duh"! Okay but for real. This episode was so fun. We LITERALLY shot it on Christmas morning and had a nice lunch with my mom afterwards. Lol. Thanks to all the Ugandans that helped with this episode and Enjoy this episode ESPECIALLY Kimi and Pihon, our guest hosts! ENJOY THE PEARL OF #AFRICA!

Because Barbie knows that he must cover this episode during difficult current events. It has been a year later and the timing still couldn't be anymore.... yeah. :/ But Barbie and his team had covered war-torn countries and countries that were hit with the latest tragedies before. I'm sure they'll be able to pull this episode off in a delicate matter and still provide the same GN atmosphere!

The next 4 episodes in line are countries that appear a lot in the news for me (Ukraine, UAE, UK, and USA) and I know that this far into the channel, the team is going to put nice episodes together for them all. All that being said, I'm already excited for the Uruguay episode that's coming after those big ones, since it's an obscure country to me and much of what I know about it comes from Wikipedia or surface-level trivia of its bordering nations.

@@tannerwilson4843 Yeah everyone wants to visit Brazil and Argentina when they come to South America but no one ever goes to Uruguay or they think it must probably be the same as Argentina which isn’t true in the slightest. Uruguay while being similar on the surface to Argentina and sharing a lot in common they also have a lot of differences which of course aren’t immediately evidently obvious on the surface to us outsiders of course lol.

I got the opportunity to go to Uganda last fall, it was the trip of my life, I loved everything about the country, the people and the culture. The most memorble thing was when a friend told me ”You see, here in Uganda everyones smiling, and you guys are not. Here in africa we have nothing but are happy all the time, in Sweden you have everything but are sad all the time. Your bar for happiness is to high, just relax and see that anything can make you happy during your stay here.”

Ugandans are basically my cousins, a fact I learned on a heritage trip with my Dad to Kenya this past christmas in 2022. My dad was is from a village in central Kenya, in an area called Murang'a. We previously visited when I was 4, but I'm 26, going on 27 now and have to say, it was a life changing experience and the source of a whole new admiration for where I'm from. Africa doesn't get as much credit as it deserves, especially East Africa, but Barbs and the Geography now crew never disappoint!

Though I am Ugandan l have learned quite a few things. Everything is well articulated & educative. It has helped to put the country on the map in a positive way instead of picking the worst which gives a negative picture of not only Uganda but Africa as a whole as most people view it as a country as opposed to a Continent. Guys who haven't visited Uganda known as the Pearl of Africa should do so. Thanks all of you guys. Very well done job.

Love the episode, like all the earlier ones. One thing I found very interesting - they call a makeshift stove (mentioned at 12:08) a "Sigiri". I'm from India and guess what we call a stove in Hindi - a "Sigri" or "Sigdi" and in Marathi (my mother tongue) we call it a "Shegdi". Amazing to find similar words for the same thing in cultures so far away!
@LizAbwooli
@LizAbwooli Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't be surprised if the word Sigiri, actually came from the Hindu word, considering how influential Indian culture has been in Uganda. For instance we call tea , Chai, yes, that's our traditional word for it, and on other parts of East Africa. We also prepare it similar to Indian Chai. We also eat samosas and chapatis which are undeniably rooted in Indian Samosa & Parantha origin.

'Idi Amin is like Hitler'. Nailed it. A good friend of my father's got thrown out of Uganda aged about 20 for the crime of having the wrong skin colour. His family may have come from the Indian sub-continent, but he had never lived anywhere other than Uganda. Suddenly he was removed from the only country he knew or had ever lived in. That's called racism. It's also brutality. He gained asylum in the UK and ended up living a pretty successful life.

Thanks for bringing this beautiful country closer to those who don't know. Atleast someone has got another view of it in mind. Most people have hard of Uganda but they've not know it's positivity. Small as it is but it's precious to us, besides being a home it's also worm. Uganda is always a friendly and loving country that welcome everyone. For God and my country 💕 🇺🇬

This Uganda episode is really interesting. What I learned throughout all these years is that there are many hidden places and interesting things to know we can't imagine in every country in this really big Earth. Even in my own country I thought there was nothing in some places and I was surprised.

24:25, “Soccer” was coined by the English as a shorthand name for Association Football because the term “Rugger” had been coined for Rugby Football. “Soccer” comes from the word “association”. When Association Football began to spread in the US, we already had American Gridiron Football with a lock on the shorthand name “Football”.

Honestly, the discussion about Idi Amin, who expelled several minorities and ordered executions for others shows a lot about how easily autocrats can sweep their crimes under the rug. Kimi literally sees Idi Amin as Hitler (whether that’s justified or not I can’t say, but he definitely used public executions as a brutal method of suppression or even cleansing, and Wikipedia says that he is “considered to be one of the most brutal despots in modern world history) but for Pihon, that’s all good because Amin brought home the body of their king. That’s it. Not gonna dispute the importance of having the remains be returned to them, but apparently that’s ALL it took for the king’s people to completely support Amin and his gruesome ways. Goes to show how easy people are sometimes; give one kid a small cookie, and he won’t mind you breaking another’s nose for lunch money. He’ll just turn around and eat his cookie, pretending he didn’t see anything (or worse yet, acting like him getting the cookie was more important than the victim getting his nose broken for some bucks).

Great comment. Kinda sad that this episode has a whole minute dedicated to defending a mass murderer. His perspective was really interesting but not at all rational or ethical.

Excellent episode as per usual, Barbs! I can't imagine how difficult it must have been to resist referencing that old "Ugandan Knuckles" meme - it's like when the Nostalgia Critic reviewed _Little Nemo_ and didn't make a single _Finding Nemo_ joke (unless you count the joke at the end where he's congratulated for not doing so, then he asks "Does that count?"). Also... good luck with the next episode. I bet this'll be Israel 2.0, but with even bigger eggshells to avoid.

I got the opportunity to stay in Uganda for a month and a half last summer for study abroad. It was amazing! We mostly stayed in a campsite in Kibale National park where we went to Fort Portal from time to time to buy groceries. We unfortunately didn’t get to see the capital but the river safari at Queen Elizabeth National park made up for it. The food kinda reminded me of some of my food (i come from an afro-latino background so lots of plantains and rice). I would def go back if i can
